Richard Loe hopes PdV remains the coach

Former All Blacks prop Richard Loe has slammed Springbok coach Peter de Villiers for his comments and also for the performance of the Springboks, reported New Zealand’s Sunday Herald.

Rugby 365 reports that his comments came after the Boks’ third successive defeat in the Tri-Nations – and Loe has expressed the hope “this character” [De Villiers] will remain in charge until after the 2011 World Cup.

Loe intimates that with De Villiers in charge, the Boks will be less of a factor in defending their World Cup crown “as I don’t think he is doing them any good.”

The former All Blacks prop was amused by Saru’s reaction.

“I had a good laugh when I heard the South African Rugby Union were going to Sanzar with complaints about how the Springboks were being treated by referees.

“Coach Peter de Villiers criticised the handling of the Wellington test, saying he was considering coaching his team to “cheat” on the field.

” ‘As a coach, you don’t want to coach your team to cheat, but maybe that is something we are going to have to consider.’

“I mean, really … I hope this character stays in charge of the Boks until after the World Cup as I don’t think he is doing them any good.

“This is the same Peter de Villiers, who said after that 3-0 drubbing of the All Blacks last year, that New Zealand had missed the boat and had not changed with the times.

“Hey, Pete. See that boat disappearing over there? That’s the good ship ‘Changed Times’ – and you’ve missed it, brother.

“The Springboks do not appear to have worked out that the game has changed again. The previous law interpretations suited their game. The new ones don’t.

“If it is true, as a lot of the stories say, that the senior players are mostly steering the Bok ship, this shows the weakness of that situation.

“That’s when you need a good coach who can step back and convincingly show the players where they are going wrong.

“The Bok efforts against the Wallabies last night and in August-September will tell us whether the Boks can change and/or whether the Wallabies are as capable of playing the new rules as the All Blacks clearly are.

“I am shovelling a lot of the blame on De Villiers because, to me, the Springboks are not really playing cohesively or as a united force. They don’t look like the Bulls, the Sharks or the Stormers in style. They look like a misguided Bok team.

“The All Blacks have taken our best players from across the five Super 14 franchises and have aligned them with an All Black game plan and an All Black style. The Boks appear to have taken only some of the best players from the Super 14 and don’t appear to have adopted the style to compete at present.

“It will be interesting seeing how/if they can adapt.

“As for all this bleating about referees, I think it’s crap.Nothing’s changed. For years now, players have been penalised for head butts, spear tackles and the like.

“The old days of sorting out a Bakkies Botha by a swift clip to the chin in a scrum have gone. It used to cost you a lecture and three points if their kicker was good enough. That’s all gone now. Now it’s a yellow card and the other guys stick 10 points on your side while you’re off the field. It can’t happen – but it is with them.

“The Boks are complaining that Richie McCaw gets better treatment and Rene Ranger should have been punished for a no-arms tackle. Rubbish.

“It’s like what golfer Gary Player used to say: “The harder I work, the luckier I get.”

“All the Bok complaints show me is that they are not playing well enough. If they were, they wouldn’t be coming under the referees’ microscopes and they wouldn’t be getting twitchy about penalties and the way they are treated.

“No, for me, I hope they don’t sack De Villiers. It would be good to have him there for the World Cup”.

  • I wonder if Richard called for Graeme Henry’s head after the AB’s lost all three tests against The Boks last year??
This is why I despise NZ so much. They’re becoming worse that the freakin Poms and Aussies put together!!
Why would a NZer want the Bok coach to be fired a mere 15 months away from the next RWC??
We’re not stupid Richard!! You’re running scared aren’t you??

  • Cross posted for convenience’s sake.

Did anyone notice the distinct LACK of smack-talking in the media by a certain individual when we were putting 40 points past the 4th best side in the world 5-6 weeks ago?

I don’t care what anyone says, but if I had a boss behaving like a retard, yes, I would be expected, under company policy, to present a united front, but I can tell you that I wouldn’t be motivated to go to the wall for the guy.

We’re missing Juan Smith, JPP, Bismarck, FDP, Frans Steyn, Brussow.
    That’s SIX world class players.
I bet you the NZer’s would be crapping themselves if they were in a samiliar position!!

We read it the first time.

PdV has cocked up in a big way, no doubt.

He needs to change the gameplan cos the team out there RIGHT NOW cant play the usual Bok game.

We dont have a Brussouw to compete on the ground, no Bismark, Beast and Bakkies to inspire terror, no Smith to do the hard yards, no FdP to run the show, no JdV or Fransie to add some penetration at 12, and no JPP at 11 to close down the wing and add some bite on attack.

To top it all off, Morne can only play one way – and it is the kick and chase, kick the penalty game that we don’t have the personnel for right now.

So yes, PdV should have realised this and adapted the tactics, but we will still be a force next year.

And lets not forget that Graham Henry was not fired after leading a great AB team to losing as the 2007 WC semis, and a 3-0 trouncing by us last year.

  • Of course Richard will say these things, he was famous for cheap shots, but the fact is… Divvy is skating on thin ice as we all know and his character has not aided matters, what is more concerning than all this is that SARU will keep him, and sadly I am finding it difficult to be optimistic… I entrust sanity prevails and they do get their foot out their mouths’ and heads out the arses and catch a serious wake up… For the wheels to be coming off in mid 2010 is a bit scary… But not yet catasrophic… What will be catastrophic is seeing only small changes come the remainder of the Tri-Nations and EOYT, because The All Blacks, French (on their day) and Aussies have us licked and these will be the contenders…

  • Whether we’ve lost a lot of players or not, we should not be performing this bad. Surely our 2nd best is not this crap.

Well, we lost 0-49 in 2006 and that was pretty much our first choice team and yet a year later we won the RWC in France!!
