@robdylan (Comment 36) : Rob, while I would never usually disagree with you I think you have this just partially right. I really don’t think that one can expect a 3 to hold his own at 1 in international rugby. CJ has always been a 1 that can hold his own on the international stage at 3. Jannie has had some significant game time at Super 14 level at 1, even though he is a specialist 3. CJ would always be my bench prop, his ability to cover both sides and his agility make him a strong impact prop. I have never seen BJ play 1, and I expect he would get thoroughly stuffed if asked to play on that side in an international. One thing we learned over the past 18 months is that Smit is a much better option at 1 than 3 if he is to play prop. So my opinion is that Beast was not on the bench because we needed someone to cover 3, and Smit would be expected to cover 1 if needed. Remember Gurthro is the only player to play every minute of all three tests in the tri-nations. I don’t think PdV every planned to replace him unless injured, in which case, Smit would move to 1.

@rekinek (Go Klose!) (Comment 35) : well, yes, but when picking your prop reserve, you want to make sure you always have specialist tight head cover in the team. Thinking is that a 3 can play 1 if required, but not usually the other way round. so BJ, CJ and Jannie would all be superior bench options to Beast.

if Jannie and Beast are available, I’ll start with them. Pat on the bench and Herbst to sit out – he’s young and he’s done well, but he’s not Jannie just yet.

The loose forward combinations are very complex and a lot depends on whether Deysel is fit or not.

Assuming he doesn’t play, I would start with Botes, Alberts (7) and Kanko (8) with Keegan coming on for Kanko with half an hour to play.

Even if Deysel is fit, I would go with the same unit and add him on the bench as a fifth forward
