SANZAR issues misconduct notice to PdV

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers might have the ‘full support’ of his South African Rugby bosses, but he is in hot water with SANZAR over his recent media outbursts.

SANZAR – the organisation that controls competitions between teams from South Africa, New Zealand and Australia – on Thursday issued a notice of alleged misconduct against the Bok coach.

Rugby 365 reports that this follows comments he made on Australia’s Fox Sports ‘Rugby Club’ programme on July 21.

De Villiers intimated that referees were biased against his team, although he later attempted to retract his statement – suggesting that he was misinterpreted.

“I’ve got my own observations about the last two Tests, and maybe I can’t say it in public, but we do have a World Cup in New Zealand next year and maybe it was the right thing for them to win the games so they can attract more people to the games next year,” he said on Australian television. (Read about his outburst here!)

SANZAR wrote to SA Rugby on July 22 in relation to the comments.

Having discussed the matter with De Villiers on his return to South Africa after last weekend’s Tri-Nations match against Australia, the South African Rugby Union this week provided a response to SANZAR bosses.

However, SANZAR have still opted to proceed with disciplinary action against the Bok coach.

“Having considered the response from South Africa we have determined that Peter de Villiers’ comments may constitute a breach of the SANZAR Code of Conduct and warrant further consideration by a SANZAR Judicial Officer,” said SANZAR Chief Executive Steve Tew.

A SANZAR appointed Judicial Officer will conduct a hearing in the next week with details to be advised.

SARU, in response to the SANZAR statement, said it “notes” the allegation of misconduct brought by SANZAR against the Springbok coach.

“SARU will make no further comment until the judicial process has run its course,” the statement read.

Earlier on Thursday De Villiers met SARU officials in Cape Town, at the request of the Chairman of the SARU Technical Committee, James Stoffberg.

After the meeting SARU said in a statement that the Bok boss had their “full support” and they were confident of the Springboks getting back on track – on the field.

  • Greg Growdens take.

Now we’ve heard everything. Springboks coach Peter de Villiers has again complained he was misquoted … even in a television interview. Then again, what would you expect from the colourful Springboks rugby world? After all the shenanigans last week over de Villiers’ claims that the All Blacks victories over the Springboks were part of a conspiracy to make next year’s World Cup tournament a success, it is not surprising that many are wondering who, exactly, is in charge of the team, and whether the person who supposedly is, can last much longer because of his endless bungling. There have been claims of major rifts in the coaching ranks, that the senior players run the show, and even the South African rugby president, Oregan Hoskins, has been forced to say de Villiers’ public comments ”detract from his [coaching] ability.” At least R&M will come to de Villiers’ defence. Without de Villiers and his sensational press conferences, the Tri Nations would be a very boring tournament. Cuckoo. Cuckoo.

Surely this cant be the source of their complaint? Way too vague imo.

  • He does need to keep quiet, but I’m getting so annoyed with the complete lack of respect from the Aus media. That quote from KSA and the other article I think the same guy wrote, are just plain rude. Those guys need to be clamped as well.

Loved JJ’s article yesterday about Aus needing to concentrate on getting people to the game rather than rubbishing the World Champs.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 5) : The “maybe I can’t say this in public” bit is what changes a normal statement that the All Blacks winning would be good for next year’s RWC to a conspiracy statement.

  • These calls for PdV to be fired are beyond ridiculous, he’s got a great record in what he was hired to do, coach the boks. His poor media record has been around for a while (he shoulda been clamped a while ago) and we all know his contract is watertight.

Molly, if you could trawl through the blogging annals, you would find mostly the same names for and against Jake White as with PdV now. More consistently though, you would find the percentages for and against pretty much the same.

People are generally seldom happy. And even worse is the average deluded Bok fan – who believes that we were the world’s best – until the current coach/ captain/ flyhalf/ mascot came and ruined everything.

Fact of the matter is that the AB’s are the best by a decent margin.

Argentina is France’s bogey team and they lose to them more aften than to any other side.
Last year the All Blacks lost to the French AT HOME. What now??

We destroyed the French at Newlands and maybe we were too cocky but for Pete’s sake, we’ve never ever dominated NZ or AUS away from home, what makes you think we have a ‘right’ to beat them in their own backyard??

We are also missing at least 5-6 world class players so instead of blaming the coach for EVERYTHING, i suggest you look at all the facts/circumstances. ;-)

  • @wpw (Comment 25) : the myth is that these players are the “golden generation” of springbok rugby and by some divine right should be dominating everyone! Apparently Jake planned for them to PEAK from 2008 till now, and they have regretfully regressed under Pdv

this theory doesn’t take into consideration, form or injuries or fatigue. It is not based on even a morsel of sense, it just a perpetuated belief.

Everyone believes the Springbok should be klapping new zealand but what they don’t consider – in all their belief of the hype – is that even as far back as Hamilton last year where we narrowly beat the all blacks courtesy of 3 frans steyn beyond half way mark penalties, there was no visible class gap between us & them.

But don’t tell that to the passionate Bok fans, all of this is trite to them, their team should be winning finish & klaar.

  • @wpw (Comment 25) : Why is it unreasonable to expect a Bok side that can regularly beat the AB’s and Aussies away from home?

For how long have we known we’d be without FdP, Bissie, JPP, etc. for the Tri-Nations? You want to tell me out of all the rest, many of which are world class players, we couldn’t find decent replacements?

The Super 14 showed what we have available, but did those in-form players and combinations get the nod? NO! Our injured players were replaced by inferior, out of form and out-of-position selections.

So I think to myself how is it possible that after the drubbing in Auckland do we go ahead and play exactly the same stupid rugby for two weekends in a row after that?

All I want is for it to be sorted out – I don’t give a shit whose fault it is.

  • @Megatron (Comment 32) : You only have a point with FdP. However, I certainly wouldn’t have picked January in his place. Even the Weepee’s Duvenhage is better than him.

For Bissie players like Tiaan Liebenberg (the stand-out hooker in the S14) or Gary Botha come to mind.

There are a number of wings who could fill JPP boots without letting the side down, including a youngster like van den Heever and Aplon (who is a deserved replacement and probably our best backline player right now).

So what you guys are basically saying is that if we don’t have the six players that are currently injured available for the RWC next year we should simply accept that we’re going to get hidings from the AB’s and Aussies?

If you’re happy with that you’re more than welcome. I’m not, because I don’t buy the crap that out of a player pool as large as SA’s we can’t find decent enough players to replace the likes of FdP, or at least be intelligent and flexible enough to adapt our strategy so that we don’t need a kicking scrummie.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 41) : the last part of your post needs to be backed by YOU with names! Don’t tell us about arbitrary ‘player pools of players’ – who is a straight swap for Heinrich Brussow?

Van der heever was injured in the s14 final hence didn’t get a chance to test himself against wales & italy, you can’t dump the kid in the middle of a trinations fixture! Plus his defence is [email protected], mvovo scored both his tries on his wing!

  • @Megatron (Comment 43) : Why do we need a straight swap? Flouw isn’t a clone of Brussöw, but I thought he did as well as Heinrich would have under the circumstances.

If vd Heever was a Kiwi or Aussie he most likely would have been in the squad. That’s what I like about the AB’s and Aussies – they aren’t scared to reward form, even if it means throwing a youngster in at the deep end.
