The Blue Bulls’ Springbok lock, Flip van der Merwe, was one of three players cited for foul play after Round Four of the 2010 Currie Cup.

Rugby 365 reports that Van der Merwe, Lions flank Trevor Hall and SWD Eagles centre Sinethemba Zweni will appear before South African Rugby Union judicial committees on Tuesday – after being cited for foul play during their respective teams’ Currie Cup games at the weekend.

Van der Merwe was cited under law 10.4 (a) for punching or striking an opponent. The Blue Bulls lock punched Lions hooker Martin Bezuidenhout in the face with his left fist during the third minute of the game – a match the Bulls won 32-18.

Hall was cited under law 10.4 (m) for acts contrary to good sportsmanship. The Lions flank was on top of the Blue Bulls No.4, Van der Merwe, during the 81st minute of the match and with his open hands made contact in his face, near the eye area.

Zweni was cited for contravening law 10.4 (j) for lifting an unidentified Griffons player from the ground and dropping or driving that player into the ground. The incident occurred in the 19th minute of the game. The SWD Eagles defeated the Griffons 18-14 in this First Division fixture.

The judicial hearings of all three players will take place in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

  • Let’s not make the same mistake as we have made with Bakkies Botha everytime he got suspended. All he got was a pat on the back and “daai bleddy Kiwis en Aussies hou nie van ons nie” comments leading him to believe there was nothing wrong with what he did.

Flip needs to be given a good wakeup suspension by SARU and then some action should be taken against him by the BBRU.

THE BBRU won’t do that though, they will console him rather than council him.

  • @ Baldrick

Bakkies is braindead.. He can’t be helped..

My point is that the players should really regret what they did.. Maybe even financially!??!

@Richard Ferguson (Comment 6) : Agreed, blatant and stupid play – punching, headbutting, kicking, biting, eye-gouging – should all be penaliseable with a fine as well as time on the sidelines.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 9) : Seems Flip is learning from the best.

Didn’t Victor punch BJ Botha in a scrum a few years back. Split open his eye.

Nice lessons they are teaching the Bulls locks.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 11) : I agree… the only way the players will really feel it is if they’re punished with hefty financial fines. Banning them for a week or two is going to do nothing, especially if they’re overplayed anyway and actually look forward to the enforced rest.

  • Do too them what cricket does to their players…match fees…even add a bring the union into disripute fine…will show that spending time off the field will cost u more than a two week light contact holiday…I’m sure bakkies is doing this to go overseas…more pressure he creates might result in a early release from his contract n iff he goes to make his pension…

  • @molly (Comment 18) : I think with the camera angle we saw during the game it looked like Kanko had slapped him in the face, but had in fact missed and only slapped away the arm that was holding onto him.

I suspect it has something to do with the impending TriNations Home Leg Disaster. And the fact that Bekekr and Bakkies are out.

Does this mean it`s a total free for all out there now? Can bulls players just do what they want?
Are all players exempt from punishment now or just bulls players?
We need to know before we face the bulls again. . .
