Bosman confirms Sharks move

Springbok and Free State utility back Meyer Bosman will play for the Sharks in 2011, it has been confirmed, while two other transfer targets have opted to stay put in Bloemfontein.

The highly-rated Ebersohn twins, centre Robert and flyhalf Sias, have long been on Rudolf Straueli’s shopping list, but both recently ended speculation about their immediate futures by confirming that they’ve signed with the Cheetahs for another year. Another young Cheetahs star, prop Coenie Oosthuizen, has extended his contract by the same period.

Bosman, comfortable at either flyhalf or inside centre, was a surprise inclusion in the Springbok tour squad for the European tour at the end of the 2005 season as a raw 20-year-old. He played in three tests on that tour before being cast into the international wilderness, only earning a recall to the Bok set up this year, when he sat on the bench against Wales earlier in the season.

Bosman will move to Durban at the conclusion of the current Currie Cup season, along with a former teammate in Bulls flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter. With outside back Lionel Mapoe set to have his move to the Sharks ratified by the courts this week, the Durban side’s backline for the 2011 Super 15 could start to take on a very orange hue indeed.

Not a bad buy AT ALL.

We are actually going to have some depth at 10/12 in the S15. Will be a strange feeling.

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : Agreed. The brothers were over the top. With Guy Cronje, Bosman, Lambie and JLP able to play 10, we certainly don’t need Sias. Robert would have been handy I guess as a back up 13 but in Lindeque, Jacobs and some other youngsters like Mapoe also able to cover 13, we should be all right there too.

Buying in the Ebersohns would not have been the right message for the youngsters. And they are not that good anyway.

  • Another mediocre no12 we already hav strauss and swannie plus jlp and lambie. Stuff development and the youngsters who prove themselves we’ll just sign an average free stater. Id b bleak if i was a u19 or 21 guy at da academy getting pushed down da order. Surely lambie and mvovo proved that there are great youngsters coming thru. Dumb signing imho

He is much better than either of Swaanie and Dries.

  • Yep, the boys are going to have to fight it out for places, and I hope the chemistry remains in the squad, I hope we remain a positive squad. I personally from here on in would like to cap the buying from Free State and Lions and focus on the homegrown talent coming through the ranks, we have a big enough squad, we now need to nurture the young guns coming through the ranks and in a season or three have a very Natal flavour to our union, I understand the professional era, and I understand the money we make from making trades etc etc, but we have the system, but we seem not to utilize efficiently. An opinion, I have no problems with likes of our purchases, as we have bought some cannons in Deysel and Alberts, we have bought some creativity and speed now in JLP and Mapoe, we have bought some midfield reliability with Bosman, some lock experience with Skeate and Mostert, but now we need to nurture our boys and create a healthy squad and culture. Good times at the Shark Tank.

  • @Jarson (Comment 25) : indeed. Inside centre has a bit of depth, outside centre is Mapoe (possibly), we need to focus on developing depth there… I miss Waylon, but I understand his move away from us. With JLP coming and Meyer Bosman, I have a feeling Monty and Swannie will be on the ‘sell’ side of the transfer book.

Oubaas, you can’t seriously think that Bosman is no better than Swanepoel???

For a starter, he can kick pass and change direction when running.

I am not convinced we needed another good player, as opposed to just springing for a single world-class player, but I do think he is better than both Strauss and Swanepoel.

  • More importantly, Keegan Daniel has re-signed for a further 3 years. Great news, he’s a massive asset to the Sharks with his pace and skills. I’m surprised actually he didn’t leave considering Kankowski and Alberts have the number 8 shirt and that seems to be his best position. Perhaps he is being groomed to take over from Botes…

  • @CapeShark (Comment 32) : Keegan won’t be selected in the starting 15 at any of the other unions, so he won’t leave easily…We have to many loosies in SA for them to be choosy about the unions they play for.

Having said that, I am very pleased that we will have him for another 3 years, he is a great asset to the Sharks, from the bench or starting and it’s good to see that he has shown his loyalty.

  • @CapeShark (Comment 32) : Yep, if we think about it openside flank is Deysel, Rhodes & Daniel (regular players I mean) – whereas blindside has been occupied by Botes for some time… I think we could see Deysel switch over to blindside and Daniel, Rhodes and co have to fight for openside – I think too that Daniel looks at home in Number 8, but Kanko and Alberts are there as you say, Daniel is a team player and valuable in any position, he has accepted his lot and I think just wants to feature somehow… Well played for the loyalty.
