Sharks vs Cheetahs – Round 2!!

It has been reported that Lionel Mapoe will know by the end of this week whether he is a Shark player or a Cheetah.

The arbitration between Free State Union and the Sharks is set to be concluded on Thursday, with a final outcome expected which would give either the Sharks the right to play Mapoe, or he will go back to Bloemfontein.

Mapoe, who is believed to be injured, is prohibited from being selected by the Sharks, as the Cheetahs are not willing to give the player a clearance certificate that allows a player to play after an injury.

Free State are believed to be very confident ahead of the outcome, as they think they still have a valid and legal contract with the player.

Whether Mapoe is injured or training already remains to be seen, but at least the player will have some form of clarity on his career by the weekend.

  • Mapoe has been training with the squad for a few weeks already. My info is that the Cheetahs don’t have a leg to stand on and they know it.

They also said they would accept the outcome of the arbitration, no matter what it is.. so that gives indication that they may e expecting to lose..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) : Why would you want to hold on to a player that doesn’t want to play for your team anymore? I mean if the Sharks lose do they pay some kind of penalty to the Cheetahs? I just don’t know what else their is to gain out of a situation like this. I think the Lions and the Cheetahs just wants to make everything as hard as possible for the Sharks.

I agree, I can’t understand why they want to drag it out and have all this media attention? Just let the player go, and move on.

Did the sharks throw a hissie fit when the Lions signed Waylon? No!!

    Cheetahs secure star trio signatures
    by Brenden Nel 04/08/2010, 11:11

The Free State Cheetahs have managed a small coup in retaining the services of three of their brightest young talents for another year.

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske confirmed to SuperSport.com that he had secured the services of the star siblings Robert and Sias Ebersohn as well as try-scoring front ranker Coenie Oosthuizen for another year.

Former SA Sevens star Robert Ebersohn had a massive offer with the Sharks, but chose rather to stay in Bloemfontein for another year before deciding on his future.

However, the Cheetahs will lose another player in Meyer Bosman, who will be moving to the Sharks to link up with his former flyhalf Jacques-Louis Potgieter, who recently signed from the Blue Bulls.

Bosman’s agent Stephan Weyers confirmed that he has signed for the coastal union and would be moving there from the end of the season.

Drotske was happy to have secured the services of the young trio, who have all performed well in the Currie Cup this year.

“We’re very glad that they have signed and made the decision to stay at the Cheetahs,” Drotske told SuperSport.com.

However he was not perturbed with the fact that they couldn’t get the trio to commit for more than one year.

“That is the way things go at the moment, young players don’t want to commit for too long with their futures. We are targeted a lot by other unions and it is nice that they will stay. That is the law of the market at the moment.”

Drotske admitted that Bosman’s move was a loss for the Cheetahs, but that he wished him well.

“Meyer has been open with us all through the negotiations and we wish him well. We will now start to look for a replacement as we have been concentrating to try and keep him in the province.”

  • Contracts are vitally important to both clubs and players and should be adhered to in all cases with strict penalties for defaulters. Both parties need that security for their immediate future planning. Having said that there are many grey areas to agreements. I don’t know the details of Mapoe’s case so cannot comment on it, but if there is a wish by one party to end the agreement it has to be amicable to both parties, otherwise the contract stands with penalties for the defaulter. I think The Sharks in the recent parting of ways with players have achieved the happy agreement and hope that other franchises and players reach similar agreements. However, contracts must be sancrosanct.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 21) : Yes and no, the sharks have a plethora of young players like Lindeque who should get opportunities, and with the signing of JLP and Bosman, the sharks backline is suddenly looking pretty loaded. You dont want to have too much talent lying around that will get bored playing a secondary role while still earning a fat paycheck..

These guys are all playing for a world cup springbok jersey. they will rather stay at the cheetahs for a year and get regular game time, rather than move to the sharks where they will compete for places and stand a bigger chance of nipping a bok jersey. post world cup we will see alot of movement, local and guys moving abroad.

JLP wants game time, I think Bosman just wants to be part of a team/squad that performs better…and then there’s the whole money thing.

  • I reckon we have a pretty good backline for next year’s Super 15:

    9 McLoed/Kockett
    10 JPL/Lambie
    12 Bosman/Lambie
    13 Jacobs
    11 Mvovo
    14 JP
    15 Lambie

I’d play Lambie as 1st choice Fullback, and keep him as cover for Flyhalf or inside centre.

I’d keep Ludik on the bench as cover for Fullback & Wing.

    What do you guys think?

The last few games of da super 14 and start of da cc proved that da youngster can make it, we should back dem instead of signing players who are just making da pecking order longer and taking der spaces.

  • Here’s a radical thought: What would happen if the Sharks took their entire Legal budget (which must be pretty significant) and redirected it at player development for people that are actually from Natal?

    This would mean:
    - more quality players for Div to choose from
    - a stronger Currie Cup because the Cheetahs aren’t getting raped on an annual basis
    - less money for lawyers generally
    - more time spent on sport and less on contractual wrangles.

I realise I’m in the minority here, but doesn’t this just seem to be a better, more ethical way? Or would that reduce the Sharks to their pre-1990 form?

    - Tired of the pillage
