The players to attend a 4 day training squad has been announced.

The biggest talking point must be the return of Frans Steyn to the squad. Other points to note are that Bismarck du Plessis did not make the cut.

The Sharks players called up, and not surprisingly, are Jannie, Kanko, Beast, Captain Smit and the return from injury for JP Pieterson. Butch James from Bath has retained his place in the squad.

Also invited to join the group are Bismarck du Plessis, who returned to rugby after a three month injury lay-off for the Sharks this past weekend, and Heinrich Brussow, who has been out of rugby since February after undergoing surgery

  • Bismarck and Brussow have been invited to join the squad..

They are both there because of injuries and lack of game time, but to still be in the know..

Will update the article now to say that..

  • Why have they invited bismarck to the camp if he isn’t in the squad.

medical assesment? Why can’t they do that nearer the squad?

  • So Bismarck will be away with the Boks for 4 days next week.

So he will not be able to train with the Sharks this week but WILL definitely be available to play this weekend. Stupid method of disruption if you ask me.

  • Then on Friday they will cut 5 players from the current squad of 29 reducing it to 24.

And those 5 players?!?!?!?!?!?!

SARU certainly have done their best to disrupt the provincial sides.

  • And Steyn may actually be injured.

Francois Steyn was, however, injured in a pre-season game on Friday and will undergo a scan in Paris on Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury.

Will he be cut on friday and then re-added after his suspension ends after the 1st test?

  • Its a wonderful system isn’t it!?

I reckon Bissie will warm the bench again anyway, esp against the Leopards..

I wouldn’t mind Burden playing the game with Cooper on the bench anyway.. It won’t hurt the sharks that much.. We have the backup luckily..

  • I don’t see the merit in getting Biz involved in the camp when he could be playing a game of rugby on Saturday instead. You have to ask what is better for the player? I would like to see him play for Sharks either full match or off the bench for at least 30-40 minutes and then get a place on the bench against the Wannabe’s if he is fit enough. We need him back in the mix at international level.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 26) : I’m really hopeful that Odwa will find his best form quickly. He’s lacking a bit of pace these days, but still a bloody good winger.

There’s always the option to put Stef back on the wing, though.

the Boks will have to be favourites at altitude.

I just think at the minute the AB’s are humming along quite nicely and will see this as their last real challenge of the year and therefore be well up for it ! :???:

  • This is prob the best squad they could put together of available players no one else expect maybe bjorn basson .South africa needs to unearth a Fullback though frans steyns a better inside center better even than JDV I dare say ,frans steyn isn,t a long term solution though when his given too much time to think thats when his greatest blunders come don,t really see a dragg like guy coming through or raks .Everyone,s overrating new zealand at the moment they havn,t really been challenged and havn,t looked dominate their oppositions been lost in head lights
