Rory Kockott has been named to start at scrumhalf as one of a number of changes to the Sharks team to face the Leopards in Rustenburg on Friday night.

With two key front-row resources released from the Bok squad, the Sharks pack looks very solid – Pat Cilliers and Eugene van Staden will start together with Craig Burden, but Beast Mtawarira and Bismarck du Plessis offer a huge impact potential coming off the bench. Steven Sykes joins them on the wood, with Ross Skeate coming in a rotational change in the number 4 jersey. Mike Rhodes makes a welcome return to the squad to fill in for the injured Jean Deysel, with Willem Alberts starting alongside Keegan Daniel and Jacques Botes in the back row.

Changes in the backline have been kept to a minimum, with Kockott in for Charl McLeod as a rotational change. In another enforced change, Odwa Ndungane returns from injury to replace JP Pietersen at right wing, with the latter unavailable due to Springbok commitments. Pat Lambie continues at flyhalf, with the rest of the backs unchanged.

Sharks v Leopards:

15. Louis Ludik
14. Odwa Ndungane
13. Stefan Terblanche (Captain)
12. Andries Strauss
11. Lwazi Mvovo
10. Patrick Lambie
9. Rory Kockott
8. Willem Alberts
7. Keegan Daniel
6. Jacques Botes
5. Alistair Hargreaves
4. Ross Skeate
3. Eugene van Staden
2. Craig Burden
1. Patric Cilliers

Replacements
16. Bismarck du Plessis
17. Tendai Mtawarira
18. Steven Sykes
19. Michael Rhodes
20. Charl McLeod
21. Monty Dumond
22. Riaan Swanepoel

  • Too much bang for The Leopards and I don’t think it is a good thing…

This was a perfect opportunity to rest senior players, give junior players a shot, these smaller games are a double edged sword… Continuity VS game time… Plum is aching for continuity, but hell, this team could win the CC final.
Bad selections, please see comment on other thread as well…

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 4) : can’t agree… last thing we can afford now is to drop any points at all. There are some key players being given a rest of sorts here.

Only change I would have made here is to start with Rhodes at 7 and rest Botes.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) : nah hang on – don’t read too much into what I said. I haven’t seen any announcement from SARU that hey’ve been officially released or anything. I am assuming though, that the Sharks wouldn’t have named them unless they’d received an indication that they’d be released this weekend.

It’s sensible, though… both need gametime

  • @robdylan (Comment 6) : I would have rested Burden and given Bissie a start, he really needs game time, and Burden would not be dropped but rested. Chances are that after a couple of matches, Bissie will be back with the Boks anyway.

  • Very strong side this. Maybe we will have too much punch for em.

@Dancing Bear (Comment 8) : Agree Dancing Bear. CC still has a long way to go. Bissie will only be with us maybe this weekend. Not sure if he is going to play in the Tri-Nations but think he will. So this would have been a time to give Burden a rest while Bissie is there and needing game time.

Could be a bit of an issue though with Du plessis and Mtawarira only being back with the Sharks on Thursday or Friday.

With this game being on Friday they would have had not training with the team this week.

  • @robdylan (Comment 6) :
hmmmm, we can agree to disagree – I don’t think dropping a point to Leopards was ever in question, I have faith in our squad and believe fringe players are more than capable of doing the business, however with this team named, there should be no logical explanation (after learning a lesson against The Pumas)not to thump them – my main reason for wanting key players to rest is injury… Rest the guys when the opportunity presents itself… I feel this is an opportunity.

    Alternative Team:

    15. Louis Ludik
    14. Ndungane
    13. Swannie
    12. Andries Strauss
    11. Richards
    10. Monty
    9. Rocket
    8. Daniel
    7. Rhodes
    6. Ndolvu
    5. Skeate
    4. Ali (C)
    3. Van Staden
    2. Kyle Cooper
    1. Pat Cilliers

    16. Herbst
    17. Burden
    18. Anton Bresler
    19. Botes
    20. Charl MacLeod
    21. Mvovo
    22. Stef

The key chaps get a rest and focus on fine tuning for the WP game… The tactics won’t change, but the gamebreakers can focus on fine tuning. Can’t the above team more than handle The Leopards?

The Muslims work from 07:00 to 13:00 during ramadan

  • The shops usually open at 08:00-12:00 and then from 16:00-21:00 during the regular year, but when ramadan comes aroud there is little reason to open so most of the Shops open from 9:00-11:00 and then again from 20:00 to 03:00 the next morning.

So from a shopping point of view it is easier to go late night shopping.

because the muslim calendar is 11 days shorter than ours (they work on a lunar calendar) Ramadan starts 11 days earlier each year. this year it is from 11 Aug to 10 SEPT. (corrected)

The arabic name for the month is actually Ramadan. So if it was a month on our caledar we’d say the Holy month of March as an example.

Each of these Holidays lasts 5 days. So this year we will have a 5 day vac from 11 Sept to 15 Sept.

They refer to the public holidays as Eid (pronounced as in IDiot)the next one is from 13 – 17 Nov.

Injuries could come to haunt us, I hear you, and it is a major risk, but the team needs momentum to topple the mighty WP.

The Leopards are going to come into this game full of confidence after that game and they are at home in front of their home (albeit small) crowd.

Does anybody know who all our senior team wings are?

    JP Pieterson
    Lwazi Mvovo
    Odwa Ndungane
    Vulindlu

    The rest?

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 4) : I disagree, we can’t get complacent, the players can rest in the second half…if we have 20 something points over on the Leopards.

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 4) : Who do you rest anyway? When Kanko comes back Jacques/Keegan/Alberst can be rotated and will get rest. Now they can get some game time.
McLeod has been given a shot and you don’t really ever rest your backline players.

Sykes has been rested which is really good, and the front row has just gotten some rest with our boks back the past 2 weeks.

I would have started with Cooper.

  • @Letgo (Comment 70) : All valid comments, but if it is one thing I’ve learnt, playing against smaller unions usually brings forth more questions than answers… But with the heavy artillery named we should have no excuses – especially since we let it slip against The Pumas, we control the set-piece and phase play and we are good for gold…

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 27) : Yes and no, they haven’t been training together. Putting a team together like that a week before a game never turns out well, as a sharks supporter you should know that by now. You need to keep the core of your players together and make only a couple of changes. Lambie still needs game time at 10 and this will do him a world of good. He can just as easily get injured in this game as he can in the next. If his conditioning is good and he is fit then he and the rest of the key players should play in this game.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 13) : Good point, and I did consider it, especially for Bissie with lineout calls and so forth. However, after some thinking, my opinion is that both Beast and Bissie have been with the Sharks long enough to know the calls and their team mates. Practice time with the team is not as critical for experienced players like Beast and Bissie. Just my opinion.

It was frustrating to see Bissie give away silly penalties once he came on, however we should not forget how much he has done for the Sharks on the pitch. He is a fantastic Hooker and although he seems to have some “self-control” issues on the pitch, he has been a huge asset to the Sharks for a few years now. Burden has been fantastic in the CC this year, but I think his short stature puts his TH under a little too much pressure. I discussed this after the first BIL test, the BIL went with a very short hooker and as a result the TH had to scrum in to support him against the much taller Bissie. Because the TH had to support the hooker, Beast had the opportunity to destroy the TH in a couple of scrums. My opinion is that post Smit, Bissie plays 50 to 60 minutes with Burden coming on to run all around the opposition.
