Mtembu starts at 8

The Sharks under 21 side to face the Leopards shows a number of changes to the one that recorded a good win against the Lions last weekend. Baby Bok loose forward Lubabalo Mthembu, who scored three tries off the bench last week, will start at number 8 this week.

The tight 5 is unchanged, though, as tighthead prop Frans Hanekom continues to deputise for the injured Julian Redelinghuys. Outside of Hanekom, though, the rest of the heavies are all age-group Boks, with Dale Chadwick, Kyle Cooper and the Marais brothers all having represented their country at under-20 level. Jaco Otto is named at open-side flank, with big Daniel Oijambo handed his first start of the campaign on the blindside flank. The big Kenyan is a former winger and should bring a huge amount of pace to the loose trio.

An injury to former Affies pivot Willie du Plessis sees Guy Cronje reunited with his brother Ross as the starting half-backs. The latter will captain the side. Centres Howard Mnisi and Piet Lindeque are retained, along with the back three of Rosco Speckman, Mark Richards and impressive fullback Wynand Pienaar. Changes on the bench see Kene Okafor brought into the squad for the first time as he covers the second row from the bench. Cameron Dunlop is also back from injury in the number 19 jersey, while the unavailability of du Plessis opens a spot for promising centre Dwayne Jenner, who featured for the Sharks in the recent friendly against the Valke, in the match 22.

Sharks under 21:
15 Wynand Pienaar, 14 Mark Richards, 13 Piet Lindeque, 12 Howard Mnisi, 11 Rosco Speckman, 10 Guy Cronje, 9 Ross Cronje (capt), 8 Lubabelo Mtembu, 7 Daniel Oijambo, 6 Jaco Otto, 5 Peet Marais, 4 Jandre Marais, 3 Francois Hanekom, 2 Kyle Cooper, 1 Dale Chadwick
16 Hannes Snyman, 17 Dester Fahey, 18 Kene Okafor, 19 Cam Dunlop, 20 Cobus Reinach, 21 Dwayne Jenner, 22 Gouws Prinsloo

Question Rob: This Stemmett centre we bought, is he too old to run out for the U21′s?

  • Kene Okafor is also Kenyan isnt he? Are the Sharks following the NZ blueprint for recruiting regional talent instead of national talent?

  • @bergshark (Comment 7) : Yip, there is this air of expectation around the Cronje’s, but as far as I know they’ve only ever produced standard, solid games. Nothing special so far. Not that standard and solid is bad, it’s just nothing to make this much fuss about. Dropping the two guys that’s done great for you so far as soon as the brothers are on their feet…that just doesn’t seem right. I know Willie du plessis is injured, but I think he would have been benched anyway.

  • @lostfish (Comment 19) : the Sharks winning the Currie Cup twice to the Bulls once definitely helped.

When I was at school, (91-95) the Sharks and the Lions were the dominant teams. Bulls didn’t really feature that strongly. so the faithful were quiet.

Hey… I’m not really anti the Cronje’s or anything. But I do agree that there’s been considerable hype and not a huge amount of delivery yet. But I’ll never write them off.

  • @robdylan (Comment 14) : I saw schoonbee when the sharks played the U/21 in currie cup warm up . He got injured as part of the broader SA U/20 training squad that went to think it was either Argentina or France for a training camp and was therefore not in the running for U20 worldcup selection. When I spoke to him then , he had just started training again after his knee injury so he should be back soon .

  • I think the Cronje twins are awesome! They are amazing distributors and both have really good steps on them! Their defense is solid. I think people forgot how good they were when they played sharks u19! They make good decisions and they calm under pressure. They can exchange positions during a game and still be effective! Ross kicked that 55m penalty against the lions u19s which was pretty impressive. I remember watching a rovers game on tv and Guy drop back on defense andthe opposition kicked the ball down field towards touch where Guy was. Guy then took a couple of steps after catching the ball and kicked a huge drop goal from the touch line! They have class believe me, just because they not scoring the tries doesnt mean they average!
