The shark team to face the Western Province in Durban on Saturday has been announced.

The backline sees almost no change as regular scrumhalf of the Currie Cup season, Charl McLeod get his starting spot back from Rory Kockott, who moves back to the bench.

In the forward pack there has been some shuffling around, as Ryan Kankowski comes back into the mix. He will start as eighthman, with Willem Alberts shifting to the side of the scrum to take on the 7 jersey. Keegan Daniel, the in form looseforward of the Sharks so far this season, completes the loosies.

Steven Sykes comes back into the starting team to replace Ross Skeate, who had a very good game out against the Leopards last weekend. The front row in bolstered by two Springboks, with Bismarck and Tendai “The Beast” starting for the Sharks, with Wiehahn Herbst completing the front row. Craid Burden is unlucky as he is in the form of his life, and will have to come from the bench to make an impact in this game.

The pack really pleases me.. The backline is solid, they have had a few games together now and it will be Lambie to the rescue for us this weekend as he shows Dinosaur de Waal how it is done..

  • @Letgo (Comment 39) : Sure… how about, half of the rucks and tackled balls, he’s nowhere to be found, and we have to rely on the forwards distributing the ball to the backline. That’s probably my biggest gripe. You guys might think it’s minor, but I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed a scrumhalf that can’t even get that basic thing right! It’s his main job, and he can’t do it.

  • @jackal (Comment 40) : You’re talking about Kockett right? Kockett is nowhere to be found???

Cause McLeod surely gets to 99% of the rucks and distributes fast and clean ball.

Kockett on the other hand receives the ball from the ruck from some other Sharks player instead of arriving at the break down on time.

So you actually don’t like Kockett???

Remember McLeod is the guy with the slightly to long straight blond hair.

Kockett is the grumpy guy growing the beard…never to be found at the rucks.

  • @jackal (Comment 43) : Kockett is the guy with the beard on the bench…not the guy giving our backline super fast ball…. I seriously think you got them confused…He’s the guy standing at the ruck playing traffic cop for 10min before he even considered passing and then when everyone is in place he runs directly into a opposition prop or even better tries to pick up the ball, but loses it due to the fact that the opposition now has had time to commit 5 more players to the ruck and therefor successfully counter ruck over the ball and in Kockett’s space,…now Kockett will throw his hands up in the air instead of try to recover the ball that was legally slapped out of his hands.

That’s Kockett…I don’t know who you are talking about???

  • @jackal (Comment 48) : I believe you when you say he looks like Brain Adams, I wouldn’t know!!!

The point I was trying to make (sarcastically) was that you clearly see a different player than we do when both these players are on the field. The exact thing we have been blaming Rory for you claim is on of Charl’s attributes. And the one thing we have been impressed with in Charl’s play and felt was lacking in Rory’s game, you see as one of Rory’s attributes.

It either means you have the players mixed up, or that you like Rory to much and therefor does not see his flaws, or every other sharksworld blogger has it wrong and Charl really is slow and Rory fast, to the breakdowns.

We can’t argue when we see the player’s attributes in completely different ways.

Had you said Rory brings more excitement, Rory is a good kicker, Rory has been an important part of the team in the past, Rory is a better kicker out of hand, Rory can create something out of nothing…and any of his other attributes, then we could have talk about this more.

You unfortunately do not even notice one of his biggest weaknesses , and makes a rugby argument with Brain Adam’s name in it.

Therefor all I can say is…for right now, Rory is out and Charl is in and now the Sharks are playing good rugby again. That makes me happy, until Rory gets picked again…

That’s if the trajectory of the ball goes in a forward direction of the given players hands, then yes…

The point I was trying to make is that Kockett rarely releases the ball quick enough not to be impeded in some kind of way…

Either by a tackle, the ruck being pushed over the ball and into him, the ball popping out because there is so much movement in the ruck…

    Good enough :?:

Bissy just a penalty waiting to happen

The fact that you feel it is OK to belittle a player in a team you purport to support shows your complete lack of moral fibre.

    Joker.

I hope that gains me at least a little moral fibre back?

  • Imo neither of them are the complete player. Mcleod is quick 2 da breakdown and passes quickly and accurately but from what ive seen has quite a limited kicking game but is very unselfish. Kockett is pretty much da complete opposite has a great kicking game and good individual player but service is 2 slow and is a bit selfish. Kockett probably has da better defence. All in all its mcleods quick service that has made the world of difference 2 the sharks backline and got them going and thats essentially the job of a scrumhalf.

Some of those changes are first choice players returning from injury, etc. Guys like JPP, Juan and JDV were in recent years the best in their positions.
Juan De Jongh is a star for the future and so too is Hougaard.
This is a very good Bok side. You guys have the momentum but u shoulkd know by now that a wounded Bok is very dangerous!!

  • okey, i`ve made a few calculations. If we manage to beat the Province this weekend without a bonus point, that would leave us with 30 points after the first round robin stage.

Last year 50 points was the benchmark for a home semi (finnishing 2nd). That would leave us 20 points to get in 7 games, in which, lets face it, would be a tougher stage, as we would play the Bulls, WP and Lions away (and dont forget our bogey against the cheetahs in Durbs). So this weekends game could take off the pressure a bit…

  • Any which way you look at tomorrow nights showdown, this is a watershed game for us ( us being sharks we shouldn`t have a problem then . . ).

Say we lose tomorrow night, it means we`ll have to not only win everything in the second round ( including bulls and Lions away ) but hope WP slip up somewhere. Then we absolutely have to win at Newlands in the final round robin game, which lets face it would be close to impossible if wp have their bokke back. Add to this the fact that we then knew we couldn`t even take them in the Shark tank . . .

Say we win tomorrow night, and looking at the teams on paper I`m tempted to say it`s very possible, then we still have to keep our noses in front for the entire second round to secure a home semi and final.

It`s gonna be a hard ask but I feel we can make it just that little bit easier on ourselves with a victory tomorrow night.
Lose tomorrow and I think we might just be going through the motions again to finish second or third for the season.
