Griquas bag a pair of Sharks

Sharks loose forwards Justin Downey and Luvo Lusaseni have both been loaned to Griquas for the remainder of the 2010 Currie Cup season.

Despite playing starring roles for the Sharks XV in this year’s Vodacom Cup, neither player has had the opportunity to enjoy any game time for the Sharks in this year’s Currie Cup as a result of the abundance of loose forwards in the squad, including players in the form of their lives in Keegan Daniel and Willem Alberts.

Griquas have suffered a number of injuries which have seriously stretched their loose forward depth and the pair of young Sharks should hopefully strengthen Dawie Theron’s side considerably, while at the same time allowing the players to develop further by playing regular Currie Cup rugby, rather than continuing to represent College Rovers on the Durban club scene.

Sharksworld has learned that Downey will be on his way to Kimberley on Monday, while Lusaseni has already been training with them since last week. It’s not clear at this stage whether the pair will be allowed to play for Griquas against the Sharks this weekend, but they should certainly come into the selection frame for the game after that. We’d obviously like to wish both guys nothing but the best and hope that the move works out to their benefit. Well done to the Sharks for coming up with a win-win solution here as well.

  • So this seems to be a loan arrangement. Good thinking by both teams.

  • Any news on Ludik ? Normally they announce news about a player that has gone off but they did not mention a thing during the game and have seen nothing in the press . Hope he is ok but sure he will be out for a week or 2 due to concussion , boy was he out cold , this oke is as bad as Deysel when it comes to freak injuries !!

But I do think he will be forced to sit out the Griquas game, as a concussion has an enforced 2 week break..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 6) : Good to hear , yip will definately be out then . So we are in for a new look backline for Fri. Maybe Steff to fullback and Swannie to partner Strauss ?? We dont really have any other options at 15 ? Cant see them moving Odwa there …

Im not sure about Strauss yet.. he did seem to do his shoulder or arm or something..

I expected Stef to make the move to fullback, but they seemed to prefer Dumond there. Maybe Dumond to fullback and Swannie in for Strauss if he can’t play.

Will keep an eye out for the injury list..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 16) : Yip , saw that but was hoping it was not too serious . Dont know about Monty at 15 , Steff has far more experience there and is less likely to be caught out of position. With Naas and Rian , you can be sure our wings and fullback will be tested . Not a great Pretoruis fan but saw he had a good club game over the weekend so Plum might be tempted to look at him at 10 and move Pat to 12 .

Maybe it is time to bring in a young fullback from the U21 team to cover the game, even if it is only for this game. After Griquas we are back up against the Bulls and we need Ludik fit for that game.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 18) : We`ve got plenty fullback cover. Our problem area is 13.
Can`t believe we`ve got no other options. Stefan should play 15!

Another thing. Shouldn`t we`ve waited till after this weekend to help the Kwasse out with players? If they have to field a weaker team against us because of injury . .. so much the better for us right?
    We missed a trick there.

  • I agree, we need a 13 not a 15. But Stefan at 15 is a bit of a concern as he tends to kick to much. But he is solid at the back.

  • Hi guys, been visiting the site for ages but never really commented much. Can confirm that Louis Ludik was knocked out and they gave him oxygen as he was shaking a bit. But once he came round he was fine and watched the rest of the game from the sidelines. They’ll check up today to see how badly concussed he was but from saturday’s assessment, he’s fine. I hope they rest him though, can’t afford to risk a guy like him.

  • Lambie to 15, Dumond in at 10… Not exactly ideal, but cant really see it going any other way – unless a centre is brought up from the U/21 – with Stef going to 15. Think Lambie needs as much time at 10 as possible…

  • I would love to see either of the following happen.

Strauss or Swannie 12, Stefan to 15 and bring Piet Lindeque in…

    or…

Strauss/Swannie 12, Stefan 13 and bring Wynand Pienaar in.

Both young guys are highly talented players and would not disappoint. In fact this might just be the change they need to show that they are good enough to push for a place in the team, just like Mvovo and Lambie has done this year.

  • Under 21s have a cakewalk against Boland this weekend. My info is that a lot of the hard workers in that team will be rested. Perfect opportunity to bring a Lindeque or a Pienaar into the senior squad for the weekend.
