It was an ordinary day, just like any other…and suddenly it CHANGED…
I received a BBM from Rob reading: “Would you like to meet Richie and John?”…. I replied something like “ McCaw and Smit? – knowing all too well that it could only be THE Richie and THE John! Rob: “Yeah, but there is a catch”….and THAT is how one of the days, that would go down as one of my most exciting moments in my history books, started.
To say that I was excited would have been the ultimate understatement. For days on end, that was about the only thing on my mind. And needless to say – I was the envy of many a man (and woman, for that matter!)
Wednesday morning, 18 August 2010 05H15 am, getting in the shower, mind is in my cupboard (what shall I wear??)..then the drums started…holy crap –that is my heart!! And the shakes…Urbanol! Quick! Work in the morning could not go quick enough…check map, search GPS for address, Check invite, SMILE. Urbanol! And then my journey started to the Radisson Blu (the one in Daisy Street not the one 300m down the street – silly really to have TWO of the same hotels so close by ).
Up to the 12th floor….register at the “media desk” – quickly meet Mike Sharman (who we received the invite from), who told me to walk around and take pics if I want and mingle a little. (I expected to be about the only woman there – but I think the fairer sex outnumbered the …mmm..not- so- fair? sex…) I tried HARD to blend in and look like a rugby journo!
Then I saw IT!! The most coveted Rugby trophy in the WORLD?! Obviously the first thing I thought was “is that the REAL one?”…and then I saw one HUGE dude standing hands folded in front of him – like a bobby – no smile – “paraat”, watching that cup like a hawk!…It was the real thing! As part and parcel of the deal I got to take a photo with IT! I jumped onto twitter (something I just started figuring out about a day before)…@ sharksworld: Arrived! Got a pic with the Webb Ellis…and so I tried to tweet like a little bird…
The function started and I took the first seat I could find with the best view I could get of the stage, introduced myself to the gents at the table. The food was great and the wine was good.
OMG!!! There is BOB!! And Fitzie! And Oregan! And JK! And JJ Harmse And…And… – ja even Liezl van der Westhuizen – but we all know she is renowned for attending these types of things…they say she will even attend the opening of an envelope! But– Hey but what a great chick! I smiled at her (as if I knew her from school) and she returned the favour! The mood was great and relaxed and the atmosphere was festive and humorous.
Bob gave us a “tour” of NZ (looks bloody great, mate!) And there were some questions and answers with Sean Fitzpatrick and John Kerwin (I think they are doing a “last Comic Standing” thing – as they were pretty funny!) And then THE BOYS arrived!! Shit man! I tried to take pics, but then this blokes head is in front and then that guys arm. Eventually I managed to get some good ones. The questions and answers with John and Ritchie were lighthearted – Ritchie almost looking as to get Johns’ approval every time he answered a question. Then….it ended..they had other obligations..
By now I seriously needed a smoke break (KSA – I do NOT need a preach now )…and I was escorted by my own personal Body Guard to the balcony…went back inside, just in time to catch Ritchie and John outside the press conference! I MISSED it! I MISSED my one fricken opportunity to ask a question!! But I stopped them in their tracks – “please can I just have a picture?” And they were eating out of my hand! Pity the blooming photographer did a REAL shit job with my one and only picture with Captain Great and Captain Pretty…. (BTW – I have the press release and links to the articles on the stuff if you want it!)
We chillaxed a bit after the function and I managed to get a chat with JJ Harmse and a photographer (cannot remember his name though! But what a great Toppie!).
I also, as you know, managed to misplace my camera. And THIS is a story, you might not believe!
On Thursday I received one of these “send this on to 10 people and tomorrow at 11h09 you will get good news” type of mails…I did – (coz I was totally desperate to get the camera back as I was a little in the dog-box for overdoing it a bit (wine and Urbanol is NOT a good combination ) and losing the camera). Where was I…oh – ja. I did send it on…. Friday morning, I was busy with some work stuff and saw the light flicker on my BB – I saw I had a mail. And as I opened it, it was a message from Mike Sharman saying that I must contact him – they found my camera. I glanced over to my pc and checked out the time….it was 11h09…..
And here you see why I think that I experienced a true miracle!
Thanks Mastercard, Mike Sharman, Rob and Sharksworld for giving me a life-long memory!Tweet
