Griquas coach Dawie Theron has been forced to name a weakened team to face the Sharks in Durban on Friday night, as a result of injury. Lock Frikkie Spies and centre Matt Rosslee are just the latest in a growing list of casualties for the Kimberley team.
To add insult to injury (or is that injury to insult?), prop Jacobie Adriaanse, an off-season acquisition from Boland, injured his elbow against the Buuls last week and will at best play off the bench, with Jean Botha getting the nod at tight-head. Michael Passaportis comes into the second row for Spies, with Barry Geel taking over at inside centre from Rosslee.
The irony is that as early as next week, Theron is expected to have a host of Sharks players to call on, including loose forward Justin Downey and Luvuyiso Lusaseni, as well as a promising centre (who I can’t name right now). The Durbanites have agreed to send a number of their fringe players down to Kimberley to help out for the remainder of the season, but are obviously not keen on doing that until after Friday night’s game.
