Frans Steyn says he is ready to give his best for the Springboks when they face the Wallabies in a Vodacom Tri-Nations Test at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday
Addressing a press conference at the team hotel in Pretoria today Steyn said: “It is great to be back in the squad and I am looking forward to playing for the Springboks again”.
The fullback has been at the centre of media attention recently after injury prevented him from attending the Springbok training camp and ruled him out for the Test against the All Blacks.
Responding to questions in the regard, Steyn said: “That is irrelevant now. What is important for me is that I am here to play rugby. I am determined to help the team do well at the weekend”.
Steyn also clarified the delay in his release to play for the Boks saying that there were certain French Rugby Federation (FFR) regulations that had to be followed.
He also dismissed speculation that his relationship with the Springbok coach Peter de Villiers was strained.
“There is nothing wrong. There may have been a minor breakdown in communication but we respect each other and are both focused on getting a result against Australia at the weekend”.
Steyn said preparations for the weekend’s Test had gone well.
“It is always an honour to play for the Springboks, I have enjoyed the week and look forward to the game. There was an improvement in the team’s performance last week and hopefully we can go one step further this weekend”.
He added that he did not foresee any problems playing at fullback after featuring at flyhalf and centre for Racing Metro.
“I don’t pick myself and I must play where I am selected. I am ready to give it my best wherever I play. I am confortable playing at fullback and I am lucky to have experienced wings like Bryan (Habana) and JP (Pietseren) to support me,” Steyn said.

STEYNA!!!Jou Yster
I worried about Steyn this weekend. He is a no win situation. He isn’t match fit and only joined the squad now. If he has an average game everybody will jump on his back while there are players that has been in the team the whole season and still playing kak rugby and nothing is done about it.
Speaking of the Trinations, have you guys (that live in SA) seen the new Player23? It’s worth checking out, and keeping your phone on you. http://www.player23.co.za
I know this seems like a sell (and I did work on the campaign) but I still think its rad… and moersa funny.
I hope Fransie has a blinder on Saturday.
@Pokkel (Comment 4) : I’m sure he’ll do well…
What’s the bet he scores a long range 3-pointer to win us the game
(I wonder how many drop-goals he’ll miss though!
)
@Pokkel (Comment 2) : He’ll be fine, he knows the team very well.
But given Aplon’s axing and the fickle supporters if he does have an average game they’ll call for his head and how Aplon should never have been dropped.
@molly (Comment 6) : I agree Aplon should have replaced Habana
@Pokkel (Comment 7) : Ja… Habs is really struggling for form.
But I also think that people are mis-interpreting his defensive pattern, I don’t think he’s going for the intercept ALL the time (alot, granted, but not all the time) we seem to utilise a outside-in defensive pattern where he has to come off the wing and shut down the move before it starts. He just gets it wrong sometimes.
Still think its someone I’d have in my team anyday.
FRANSIENA
60 metre drop on the cards
Really good to see Frans back in the team! Hope he has a cracker on Sat!
Next thing is to get him back in Durban before the RWC – unlikely I know, but I can dream cant I??

@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 14) : it suits you!
Morne and Pokkel were the other big winners
@robdylan (Comment 12) : Cool
Good luck Fransie!
Oy?
Where is my Platinum Star?
@Big Fish (Comment 18) : you need to spend less time working and studying and more time talking shit here. It worked for Chaz, all right
@robdylan (Comment 19) : Where is Chaz? haven’t seen her in a while. Has she gone toup to platinum now?
@Letgo (Comment 20) : no… she is a Johnny-come-lately, you know
Hasn’t been with us all that long!
Actually, I have no idea where she has gone. She does tend to hang around more over the weekends, though.
@Charlie (Comment 9) : Have you seen this – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DkPOO2tF0o – Watch how far it travels over the bar…
@Letgo (Comment 11) : Yip, I am dreaming – McLeod, Lambie, Mvovo, Steyn, JLP, JPP, Ludik.
Bench – Hoffman, Bosman, Adi
oh well – we’ll see how his “all” looks like. hopefully he does well.
You cut me deep Rob: you can’t be giving wp fans Platinum Stars and ignoring the likes of me.
Fame has gone to your head.
@Mole (Comment 22) :
@rekinek (back to rugby) (Comment 23) : let’s hope he doesn’t end up seeing his “all”
@Charlie (Comment 9) : I SAW JOHANN GOOSEN(GREY) DROP A GOAL FROM 55M OUT AGAINST GLENWOOD A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO,NOW THERES A TALENT WE SHOULD PURSUE!!!
He’s already signed for free state, poor deluded fool
@robdylan (Comment 28) : LOL
I’m so over the blerrie cheetahs already
WP Jou Lekka Ding!!
@Mole (Comment 22) : Funny story, I actually had a dream about Frans Steyn last night.
The Boks was behind by six and the time was almost up. Steyn covered a kick from the back ran over a few defenders, chipped the ball over Mils Muliaina’s head and scored the try in the corner. He converted his own try and the final whistle went…
@Letgo (Comment 32) : and then all his team mates bowed down before him and praised him for his greatness, just as he likes them to do…
@Letgo (Comment 32) : stay in dreamland son!
@robdylan (Comment 28) : Well, if he’s signed for the Cheetahs I guess it’s as good as signing for the Sharks… cos at least we can poach him in a year or two
@robdylan (Comment 33) :
@robdylan (Comment 12) : Hey Rob, shouldn’t you create a sub-level between Team Captain and Coach… called “Fake coach” or “Clown” ?
@robdylan (Comment 12) :
NEEE!!!! Where is MY Loyalty Badge??? Sure as hell I deserve a DIAMOND???
@robdylan (Comment 33) :
, actually then the try was replayed a few times and then…I can’t remember… Inception. Now I believe Steyn will be our hero.
GM !!! See Toks Van Der Linde will join Karen Ferreira to sing the National Anthem before the test
Good luck buddy, if it doesn’t go well expect to bare the brunt of the fans and your coach.
@Worcestershire Sauce (Comment 41) : and all the people who were never really your fans to begin with (needed to slot myself in somewhere)
@robdylan (Comment 42) :
@Worcestershire Sauce (Comment 43) : I know, I know… I’m a real bastard when it comes to Fransie
@robdylan (Comment 44) : Don’t worry i feel the same way about the Sharks
especially Oom Stef
I think Frans kind of got handed a raw deal, he barely had a week to get settled into the team again, he’s used to playing club rugby in France, which is in completely different conditions and at a completely different level. Regardless of his lack of preperation he will be judged on this match – they should have started him on the bench and perhaps given the starting spot next week.
I also believe people are blowing his unavailability for the Boks out of proportion, especially because SARU were the ones who messed up initially, with getting their transfer papers in on time.
On his performance: He was fairly quiet for most of the game, made 2 idiotic mistakes, but redeemed himself with a brilliant pick up for the try and a good Penalty kick. He came into the game a bit more in the last 20 min of the match. And although his performance was not really justification for leaving out Aplon, I believe, if he is selected to start again next week, we might see him greatly improved.
