7. Juan Smith
6. Schalk Burger
5. Victor Matfield
4. Danie Roussouw

  • @Pokkel (Comment 11) : See, thats the problem, there’s no one else in the squad, no use calling up someone for the last game. Think Lambie might get a run at the EOYT, or Elton Jantjies.

  • Only surprise is Danie coming back in.. Did Flip’s ‘injury’ play a role here? Or is it about rotation? Didn’t think Flip had a bad game but Danie has had an awesome season I guess.

Aplon may have been a good call in place of an out of sorts Habana.

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 14) : As talented as Jantjies is, and there is no doubt of that, if they pick him at the expense of Lambie then something is not right. Both great prospects but Lambie has shown himself capable at S15 level as well as CC, which Elton has not (yet!).

Poor Kanko, honestly, why even have him in the squad? Last weekends game would have suited his style of play perfectly…

  • A bit disappointed with this. I know he hasn’t been part of the squad, but Bjorn Basson would have been a welcome addition to the bench, with Aplon slotting in for an out of sorts and tired Habana.

Is it too early to talk prospective EOYT teams? My experimental team, provided they’re all fit, would be:

    1.Beast Mtawarira
    2.Bismarck du Plessis
    3.BJ Botha
    4.Flip van der Merwe
    5.Andries Bekker
6.Heinrich Brussouw (He’ll be right as rain by then, right?)
    7.Jean Deysel
8.Duanne Vermuelen (Just to satisfy the Cape media)
    9.Francois Hougaard
    10.Pat Lambie
    11.Lwazi Mvovo
    12.Juan de Jongh/Jean de Villiers
    13.Jaque Fourie/Juan de Jongh
    14.Bjorn Basson
    15.Gio Aplon/Frans Steyn

    16.Chilliboy Ralepelle
    17.CJ van der Linde
    18.Danie Russouw
19.Willem Alberts (Perhaps Smith or Burger as an experienced head)
20.Fourie du Preez (Game time from the wood, mentor for Hougaard)
21.Peter Grant (Unless he’s turned Japanese?)
    22.Gio Aplon/Francois Steyn

  • @Mole (Comment 35) : I’d definitely have a number of those guys in my extended squad, especially Dewald Potgieter. Smith as captain also sounds good, probably the best option outside of Smit and Matfield. I know there are always bolters, but I think Elton Jantjies would be a step too far. Then again, Peter Grant’s inclusion is just wishful thinking on my part.

Where do you think Liebenberg slots into the pecking order? Ahead or behind Adriaan Strauss? I’d pick the Cheetah meself.

Fair comment, I actually forgot about Strauss – would pick him ahead of Leibenberg. Jantjies while being a little rough, might get picked… Stranger things have happened..

Really unlucky for Deysel.. Wish he could have been a part of the EOYT…

  • @Mole (Comment 37) : Haha, they don’t seem to look at CV’s at SARU. So maybe we have a chance (Speaking for myself here, do you have coaching experience? :) ).

Is Deysel confirmed to be out for the entire Currie Cup? Hence no chance to show the selectors what he can offer? Bummed.

I think having Deysel and Bismarck du Plessis in the mix would eliminate the need for a specialist fetcher – both players are immense at ground level, with du Plessis just that bit more penalty prone however.

I hope they give Deysel a crack in next year’s Tri-Nations, especially against New Zealand – he doesn’t fear McCaw. Which I think is where Francois Louw falls down – not only is he a pretty average ball carrier, he knows he’s out of his depth.
