The South African Rugby Union confirmed on Tuesday that all the contracted Springboks will undertake a conditioning programme for the next four weeks and will be withdrawn from their Absa Currie Cup squads until 6 October.
All non-contracted Springboks are available immediately for their provinces. The arrangement has been made in consultation and with agreement with the players’ contracting provinces.
The following contracted Springboks will undertake the conditioning programme:
Vodacom Blue Bulls – Victor Matfield , Danie Rossouw, Bakkies Botha, Wynand Olivier, Morne Steyn, Fourie du Preez and Pierre Spies
The Sharks – John Smit, Bismarck du Plessis, Tendai Mtawarira, JP Pietersen and Adi Jacobs
Vodacom Western Province– Schalk Burger, Jaque Fourie, Bryan Habana, Ricky Januarie and Andries Bekker
Vodacom Free State Cheetahs – Juan Smith, Heinrich Brüssow and CJ van der Linde
All players have been given a programme by the Springbok conditioning and medical team and will follow this under the supervision of the Provincial conditioning teams and in consultation with Springbok management. The contracted players will report to Cape Town on 4 October for testing.
The contracted group will be available for the final round robin stage of Absa Currie Cup matches as well as the playoffs.

NOT RICKY!!!
wpw must be livid! I know how much he looked forward to seeing their Bok Scrummy back in the blue and white hoops!!
So CJ is not going to be playing for the Cheetahs when they face the Bulls as reported elsewhere
Its makes no sense for Bismarck, Beast, Ricky Januarie, Bakkies, JP Pietersen, CJ Van der Linde are withdrawn from CC action. They need game time surely? Same goes for Adi Jacobs although he is not even back from injury yet.
Bakkies gets withdrawn from CC before he even makes his comeback! Very clever! For conditioning? What’s he been doing for the last year?
Is it to condition his mind maybe?
Off-topic but I see Eastern Province has signed Willem Stols (why?), Len Olivier and Jaco Engels (for 2011).
Deysel and Daniel gone for the season as well?
@Oubaas2009 (Comment 5) : To prevent him from getting banned for the EOYT.
@MysticShark (Comment 8) :
I knew there must be a sound reason. In PDV we trust
What SARU should just have said, is the following players have a free ride to the RWC 2011.
@molly (Comment 1) : ha ha they are probably sending him to fat camp.
Jean De Villiers can go and play for WP this Saturday, whilst Adi Jacobs (who hasn’t played for 6 months) is withdrawn from the CC? That makes a whole lot of sense.
@Oubaas2009 (Comment 12) : its obviously just contracted players they had the power to control. So they’re exercising that power.
shite
@molly (Comment 1) : @Original Pierre In Mourning (Comment 2) :
Our chances of winning the CC has just increased by 50%!!
The WP side has just lost 143kgs now that Ricky is not available!!
@wpw (Comment 15) :
@molly (Comment 13) : I realise its only the contracted Bok’s but it’s just plane stupid.
Jean De Villiers doesn’t have a contract?
And why ‘rest’ Bakkies, Adi, Ricky etc when they are hardly overplayed and in need of conditioning.
Absurd.
What happens if the Bulls for instance don’t make the playoffs? Then Bakkies might have 1 match before the EOYT? After how long?
Clowns round the world are feeling very hurt today.
@MysticShark (Comment 6) : Did Len Olivier not go overseas just last year?
Anyway glad to have that boy back in SA, he was an exciting player who got shafted a bit at the Sharks.
@Oubaas2009 (Comment 17) : And Guthro doesn’t have a contract!!!
@Oubaas2009 (Comment 17) : I know it doesn’t make sense, but we also know that unions don’t like to play along, reckon the Boks would keep everyone they could if the unions let them, now they’re just being stubborn.
Also, on JdV, think his contract expired while he was overseas or before.
@Oubaas2009 (Comment 17) : Ricky’s presence amongst the conditioned players is indeed worrying. It would imply that he is a part of next year’s plans
@Oubaas2009 (Comment 17) : bakkies is set to play this week. read it somewhere. weird
Man the lions are lucky!!!!!!!! Not losing a single player.
@rekinek (back to rugby) (Comment 22) :
WAS set to play.
apparently SARU has decided it is easier to make a blanket decision than to assess each player individually.
YIP as i’ve always maintained. There is absolutely nothing common about common sense.
@rekinek (back to rugby) (Comment 21) :
Maybe not. His contract with SA Rugby ends this year!!
@wpw (Comment 25) : assuming that they are not going to renew it putting him on conditioning programme is just a waste of money.
unless prowince asked nicely
@rekinek (back to rugby) (Comment 26) : there’s a few things about this conditioning camp that doesn’t make sense, so wouldn’t be surprised if they were wasting money.
@MysticShark (Comment 6) :
Jaco Engels??????????? WOW, why haven’t the Bulls recontracted him?
The contracted group will be available for the final round robin stage of Absa Currie Cup matches as well as the playoffs
So just enough CC games for SARU to Rake in the gate takings for CC Semi and Final fullhouse matches and for the Boks to say they have won a CC trophy when they only played in three of the seasons 16 games.
just a bit of maths. out of 20 players 5 (ie.25%) haven’t played a game for the last couple or more weeks.
@rekinek (back to rugby) (Comment 30) : unless this conditioning is about mending a broken psyche then they should send few more.
According to Supersport the 2 unions that wanted the ban enforced where the Cheetahs and the SHARKS wtf?? Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.
