Last Friday evening Canterbury went top of New Zealand’s ITM Cup, but joy soon turned to horror as Christchurch was hit by a massive earthquake in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Rugby, which so often brings people together, has again proven a healer, as the rugby loving country has rallied around the hazard- hit champion Canterbury province.

Other highlights of the round saw the return of the massive upset, with Wellington being beaten by neighbours Manawatu and top of the table Southland losing for the first time to Northland. There was also (I am pleased to report) a first win of the season for a be leagued Otago side.

We also witnessed a respectable debut off the bench for a certain Sonny Bill Williams, who showed signs of why he has caught the eye of the All Blacks selectors from off shore.

This week’s matches see Wellington travel to the ‘City of Sails’ in an attempt to get their championship aspirations back on track.

Game 44 Southland v North Harbour Prediction: Southland by 10-15 points

Southland will expect to return to winning ways this week. They dropped their first match of the season last weekend after three matches on the road. The North Shore lads could well and truly find themselves ‘under the cosh’ from a very well drilled Jamie Mackintosh led pack.
