Monty… gone?

An unconfirmed rumour at this stage, but it seems as if Monty Dumond has left Durban to join up with the EP Kings.

Dumond, who was keen to join the Cheetahs during the Super 14, but was prevented from doing so at the last minute due to the “flyhalf crisis” in Durban, has struggled to regularly get game time in his preferred position of flyhalf. He has been played out of position at fullback for the last two weeks, with less than amazing results, it must be said.

We’re still trying to get to the bottom of exactly what the situation is here and whether this is a permanent move, or simply a loan deal similar to the one that saw Justin Downey and Luvo Lusaseni move to Griquas.

  • Good for him especially with all the no 10′s joining the sharks next year.

  • Seems bizarre they would just let him/tell him to move in the middle of the season, when he was run on 15 for the last 2 games? Even if he was less than inspiring.

Downey and Lusaseni were surplus to requirements and were not getting game time so it made sense to let them go.

Monty is clearly in the plans (as he is being picked) for now? Very strange.

I think Monty was last resort to be honest.. He got picked purely because nobody else was available..

    I tend to agree.

Also this type of move would not happen overnight. Maybe negotiations have been going on for a few weeks and were initiated before Monty became the run on 15.

  • You can’t blame the guy for wanting to leave to get game time. Sadly though he is not quite good enough for Currie Cup level rugby.

  • good move – they guy wants to play. wonder how it’s gonna be in Durbs with lambie, JLP, Pretoors and young Cronje. Why do we need JLP and Pretoors is beyond me.
the only thing left is to hope that they prove me wrong.

He shouldn’t be playing at this level. Club rugby is his best bet I’m afraid!!

Kings will be great for him. Now lets hope Ludick comes to the fore at 15 for us.. If not then lets use Wynand Pienaar or Mark Richards there I reckon.

  • @wpw (Comment 9) : Monty has done very well for the Sharks for periods of time when the front liners were gone. As BF says, he always gives his all for the Sharks, and I’m afraid his level is Currie Cup and not any higher. He is more than a club player, but certainly will never make it in Super Rugby. I think that you will find that with Monty Dumond at 10, the Sharks have won many more Currie Cup matches than they have lost.

  • @war1: downey doesn’t cut it at cc level, rhodes a promising talent.there not that many others i can think of.skoliwe ndlovu nt up to scratch ether.meyer swanepoel?jaco otto? the kenyan looks like a real athlete, but the intensity is going to be huge in s15,especially since it’s gonna be basically a cc with the boks available, for starters.the pressure on the sa franchises to make it to the s15 proper ,is gonna be huge!we need to look at sharks gameplan, and that gameplan puts a lot of physical stress onplayers

  • @war1: already we will be starting the s15 without jean deysel, and he is our most effective(stats @robdylan?) ballcarrier.another hard runner with proven gametime at the higher level will never hurt, but having to rush into u21 ranks to find that type of player in lets say a game vs bulls or cheetahs or any of the other sa teams is going to be a huge stepup in intensity for that unproven and as yet nt battle hardened loosie.taking big hits frm schalk, bakkies, juan smith and co is tough!

  • @bergshark (Comment 27) : I don’t know how we can say that Downey doesn’t cut it at CC level. It’s not like he’s ever had the chance.

Sharks should have blooded him back in 2008 when we had a real crisis, instead of letting plonkers like Nic Strauss play. Justin got a total of about half an hour in the Currie Cup for the Sharks last year, most of which was at lock against Province in the rain.

He had his first Currie Cup start for Griquas last week and played well, according to reports. Let’s give him a few games to see how he does in a struggling team before we summarily write him off and go try buy somebody else.

The madness has to stop somewhere.
