The Sharks Moving on…

Most Sharks fans should be quite pleased with the current CC log standings. How are we gonna fair in the second half of this campaign? More importantly how is the team going to shape up?

It is great to see that we are able to keep some consistency going; Especially in a CC campaign that can be up and down concerning The Springboks jumping from union to country almost every week. The Sharks have none the less been able to keep consistency in selection as much as possible, but do we need to start introducing guys like Mostert, Pretorius and Adi? I say yes the earlier the better. Gerhard has played at least 160 minutes of club rugga and still he can’t make the bench against the Pumas? Why? Skholiwe has shown enough in the past to suggest he will never truly play the role that The Sharks loose trio needs to do week in and week out. That is why Rhodes should be looseforward cover and either Mostert/skeate(injured)/Bresler should be 18; I mean they are specialist locks.

Enough about this weeks squad, what is the best team we can put together to win this cup? I am very sure that many will disagree with my take, but i think this team will allow us to fully take advantage of the brand of rugby we are currently playing.

*-Back 6 October from Springbok conditioning programme.

1. Beast*/Cilliers  2. Bissie*/Burden 3.Jannie(currently crocked)/van Staden.

4.Always goona be sykes  5.Mostert(when fully fit)

6.Keegan(currently Injured)                                 7. Willem

                                                        8.Kanko

                                                                   9.Charl

                                                                                 10.Pretorius

                                                                                                 12.Lambie

                                                                                                               13.Jacobs 11.Mvovo                                                                                            14.Ndungane/Mapoe?

                                                                                     15.Stef(C)

16.Smit*/Cooper 17.Herbst/Van staden 18. Hargreaves/Skeate(undicided on these 2) 19. Botes 20. kockett (please regain some reasonable form) 21.Monty(EP?)/Mapoe? 22. Ludik

Now let me tell you why.

Up front beast, bis and jannie are our best complete front row in that they do the scrumming bladdy well and also do a very good amount of ball carrying and tackling. Herbst in an awesome scrummager, but Eugene ain’t to shabby either, therefore having Van Staden come off the bench would be awesome in that he does a great amount of ball carrying and tackling; whereas Herbst to be honest in not as mobile.

At lock Mostert is my man at 5, because we need our tight 5 to dominate physically, before we can unleash our Back line and execute our Brand of Rugby to it’s fullest. Standing at at least 2 M and 122 Kg he is a man one would struggle to leave out of the starting tight five in my mind. Hargreaves and skeate would do a good job off the bench. Both work hard and do a good amount of tackling too. Possibly Hargreaves would be a better option if we play The Bulls in the knockouts, because he clears out the rucks a lot better than skeate can; Don’t think Skeate can get down there.

Looseforward it is pretty much easy to select; botes/keegan, botes is obviously a real hard worker, but Daniel has been in real awesome form and allows Alberts to rest slightly, due to the fact that Keegan does his fair share of good ball carrying.

Now to Pretorius and Lambie. Pretorius firstly, when fit he is a world class 10. He has a long passing game, kicking game and a good eye for a gap too. Lambie has obviously been great for us at fly so far, but his lack of experience in a knockout game still worries me. But, i think at inside he has alot more opportunity to run at gaps and space which he did brilliantly when he played there. No disrespect to Strauss and Riaan, but they don’t have such a great eye for a gap, they rather have a great eye for their opposite number…if you know what i mean.

Adi is a no brainer for me at outside, great running game, can create opportunities for outside backs and is probably one of the best in the business when targeting the gap. Stef has also been good at outside, but i feel he still offers the most for us from the back. Great in the air, long kicking game, runs ball up at pace and he is a great last line of defence.

Mvovo…self explanatory. Ndungane over JP? Just until JP gets his head in the game again, to me he seems way too comfortable. Odwa always gives his all and hardly made any silly errors over the last couple of years, and his basics and support play is really solid.

On the bench, Botes is obviously our number 4 loosie now that Deysel is out for a while.

At halfback rory is our only experienced option until Hoffman arrives and Dumond to cover flyhalf. Only as a 3rd choice option at 10. Ludik is cover for stef if stef gets hurt or he is required at 13. Ludik can also cover wing if we need him too.

All in all we have a pretty solid pack to release our exciting backline and a Fly that can play the conservative game too. Can’t wait to analyse our super 15 squad, with pottie, meyer,Mapoe and hoffman we will have even more quality options. Lets not forget about Deysel and Steve coming back next year too. We are going to have the most depth across each position in the world!!! For a club/union that is; gonna be awesome.

We got the team, management and brand of rugby to win us This years Currie Cup! Sharks Forever!!!

  • Mostert and Sykes together? Would start Sykes with Hargreaves/Skeate.
Throws the balance of the pack off when you play two traditional no. 4 locks together.
I don’t think Pretorius should be in the mix, his best days are long gone.
We all know what a revelation Lambie has been at 10, no doubt that he should stay there.Lambie and Adi might be a little light in the midfield too.
Other than that, nice team ;-)

  • @JJR: like ur reasoning on why ap @fh ahead of lambie.ap does have a good passing game-and,oh yes, does take the dropgoal when the opportunity presents itself.. Perhaps when u lead 24-13 and the first time u come within 22m of opponents goalposts, and their defence is pretty much set,ie only real attack option is the pick-and-go,then put the fh in the pocket ,clear the potential opp chasers, quick accurate pass ,sweet strike and voila! 27-13 in the 42 min of game..u receive kick-off .

  • @blueski palooski (Comment 6) : Mostert has been mainly used as a number 5. H eis like muller just a bit heavier, that’s my take. I put mostert at 5 also to compensate for the lack of huge guys in the backs. Tight five dominates, it doesn’t matter how big the backs are…look at the wallabies. Patrick-92kg and adi around 95-98 kg; they not really small at all. Jaque fourie only weighs around 90, height doesn’t always mean the guy will have the weight. Our guys are compact and really solid thanks to great conditioning programmes/periods at The Sharks.

  • AP at 10.

He WAS a good flyhalf when he WAS fit. When last was he fit and when last did he play ONE good half of Rugby? 2008? or was it 2007? He is over the hill and should be sent far away.

    9.Charl
    10.Lambie
    11.Mvovo
    12.Swanepoel
    13.Jacobs*
    14.JPP*
    15.Terblanche

    Bench
    Strauss
    Kockott
    Ndungane

Also if you’ve included JAcobs who is also part of the Bok program then why not play JPP on the wing ahead of Ndungane?

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 13) : AP’s experience will really help come knockout time…super 15 he can do bench duty. Eg. All Lambie’s kicks that go out of the full, and misses at goal…we can’t afford that in a semi-final or final. Jp is too comfortable and needs hos form back, dropping him will do him good.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 17) : Don’t wanna drop him, just move him to inside until he has experienced some knockout rugby. His percentage is not really the problem, the main thing is that he seems to miss the important kicks and get the kicks that don’t matter. Eg. when Sharks are on backfoot he doesn’t always get the easy kicks over.

  • You may have a point with Andre Pretorius but he needs game time first. He also remains an injury concern. My feeling is we need to think long-term and give Lambie a decent run at flyhalf so he’s more mature in that position come next year’s S15.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 17) : I still think “AP” can offer us some solid tactical kicking and clearance kicks during this CC. Super 15 we don’t really need him. Patty is still a bit inconsistant with those aspects, but it will surely get better over time and he will be the Complete 10.

Matt started at 12 and learned from larkham and now he is simply awesome, Patty can learn the little aspects in the same way; and then he will make a lot less basic mistakes, but on the running aspect and distribution, Patty is spot on.

    @JJR (Comment 28) :

From an article earlier this week on 365.

The Free State Cheetahs are planning further legal action against AWOL wing Lionel Mapoe, who still has not turned up for training in Bloemfontein.

After a legal tug-’o-war between the Cheetahs and the Sharks for the 22-year-old’s services, the matter was finally resolved when the arbitrator, Advocate Bertus van Rhyn, ruled in the Cheetahs’ favour.

Mapoe cited problems with his salary as the reason he wanted to leave and take up a more lucrative contract with the Sharks.

Despite being ordered to return to training with the Cheetahs, a fit-again Mapoe is believed to still be training in Durban, with the Sharks, according to Volksblad.

Cheetahs assistant coach Hawies Fourie confirmed to rugby365.com that Mapoe still had not pitched for training on Tuesday and that Cheetahs legal representatives were looking into the matter.

The ongoing saga is a massive blow for Mapoe’s Springbok aspirations, as his continued absence from Currie Cup action – after an injury-hit Super 14 – could kill off his chances for selection for the Springbok end-of-year tour.

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers had planned to meet with Mapoe and his agent Jan-Harm van Wyk this week in an effort to speed up the Springbok Sevens star’s return to the field. For unknown reasons the meeting was cancelled at the last minute.

The Sharks are now expected to offer the Cheetahs a transfer fee for Mapoe, who appears to have no intention of returning to Bloemfontein.

The guy is great with ball in hand, takes it flat and controls the game better than any other 10 we have. Sure, AP has the experience and all of that, but his decision making has always been suspect. When Bosman and Potgieter come into the mix, he will become a star again…on the club scene.

Looking ahead to S15, the Sharks have a very good opportunity and if all goes to plan, will make the semi’s which is knockout rugby. So, why not give Lambie a taste of it now? We looooove moving players around and look how that turns out for the union.

  • @JJR (Comment 15) : Think down the line – give Lambie as much game time in the 10 jersey as possible and he will become a more complete player. He is still young and is bound to make silly mistakes but with game time he is only going to get better.

  • @JJR (Comment 16) : Much the same as the team looks like now.

So first I’ll tell you who I’d select when the boks are away, and then when they are back.

    15. Ludik (Stefan if Ludik injured)
    14. Odwa/JPP (JP was one of our best players when he was with the Sharks and did pretty good with the boks)
    13. Stefan/Adi (Maybe I don’t know if I’d bring Adi back if he’s only going to play 3 games, he’s been out for a while. Needs to get his form back first. EOYT  )
    12. Strauss & Swannie (Depending on form, Swannie has looked good.)
    11. Mvovo
    10. Lambie (not specifically because I wouldn’t move lambie back to 12, but rather that I would never let the poor kid play inside a guy like AP, you might think AP is talented, but you must also know that he does have the occasional brain fart and sells his teammates down the river. Lambie doesn’t need that now. If he has to move back to 12 it needs to be next to a solid/save fly-half.)
    9. McLeod
    8. Kanko & Keegan (This is where keegan has played his best rugby this year.)
    7. Alberts & Keegan (Might want to rest the big guy for the last 20/30 min of matches he’s putting in some huge knocks. Keegan likes the loose game at the end of games.)
    6. Botes (Need someone who will do the work, Botes is also a good supportive runner, defender and his hands usually doesn’t let him down.)
    5. Al (He’s been really solid for us, I don’t see mostert taking his place)
    4. Sykes & Mostert (sykes has had an average season, I’m prepared to give mostert a chance here)
    3. Herbst/Jannie (I felt like herbst has been good in the scrums, just needs to up his work rate)
    2. Burden & Cooper/Bissie
    1. Cilliers/Beast

    16. Van Staden/Herbst
    17. Cooper & Burden
    18. Mostert & Skeate
    19. Rhodes
    20. Kockett
    21. Swannie or Strauss
    22. Odwa/ AP (Don’t like the idea of AP on the bench, they’re gonna keep subbing Lambie and break our momentum. Kockett and AP should stay on the bench unless either Lambie or McLeod gets injured.)

  • @JJR (Comment 15) : When does Lambie kick out on the full, I think that’s happened once this season??? :???:

  • @Letgo (Comment 62) : Oh and it’s not like AP doesn’t kick balls out on the full, his not the most solid Fly-Half in the world. Lambie on the other hand, is attacking and doesn’t make to many errors.

  • @JJR (Comment 19) : That’s a good question JRR, I think maybe it comes down to the fact that stef is our 13 cover and Adi hasn’t played much rugby this year, so you need him to be available for 13 first.

Ludik is not back at his best yet and right now, if it’s a straight selection, you’re right Stefan would be the better option. Looking ahead though, Ludik is the future and will be there come s15, I don’t even know that Stefen will be able to get a spot in the 22.

Wouldn’t drop Stefan in the CC though, so if Adi does come back definitely Stefan at the back.

  • @blueski palooski (Comment 37) : methinks AP is more of a kicking flyhalf and I doubt he will easily take a contact. That was good about Frans Steyn and Butch that they were not afraid to run into opposition. Though Steyn has itching boot on him.

  • @rekinek (back to rugby) (Comment 71) : He’s a running 10, was the reason Jake got him into the squad. Just don’t think he can control the game well enough. Lambie is young and will make mistakes, but the long term return will far outweigh anything AP can bring.
