Round 7 finally saw a run on performance from the NZRFU’s prize asset, Sonny Bill Williams. SBW didn’t disappoint as he ran strongly and off-loaded in the tackle during an impressive performance. He already looks nailed on, to make the EOYT with the AB’s to Europe !

Fellow South Islander’s, Southland continued to improve as they kept abreast of the champions with their best performance of the year, swamping North Harbour in Invercargill.

With both Canterbury and Southland on 26 points, only points differential separates the two teams.

The bottom of the table is also now starting to heat up, with Otago getting off the bottom of the table for the first time this season, recording their second win of the season in as many weeks.
This week’s action has most games looking like you could make an argument for them going either way.

Round 7 Match Previews

I will do my best to update the team lists as they become available.

Game 50 Waikato v Southland Prediction: Southland by 1-5 points

Southland, go to Hamilton on the back of a really impressive performance at home last week against Harbour. Although Waikato were robbed last week by two late penalties by Richard Buckman, they will really find their visitors tough nuts to crack.

TEAMS: TBC

Game 51 Manawatu v Auckland Prediction: Auckland by 10-15 points

Auckland should exhibit too much control for the Turbo’s, and should comfortably ease to victory here.

Manawatu coach Dave Rennie makes six changes to his eight forwards from last week, including an entirely new front row, a lock and two loose forwards. The only players to hold their spots up front from the well-beaten pack last week are Michael Fitzgerald and Hamish Gosling. However their is only one back change, with Casey Stone moving onto the wing ahead of Sevens star Lote Raikabula.

Auckland look a lot more settled, with Kurtis Haiu back in the starting lineup and Dave Thomas returns on the wing. Benson Stanley, makes a welcome return to the bench.

Manawatu ITM Cup Form:

Round 1: (H) Lost 23-37 v Southland

TEAMS: TBC

Game 54 Tasman v North Harbour Prediction: Tasman by 1-5 points

Both of these sides will still harbour (no pun intended) aspirations of ‘First Division’ rugby next year, but in saying that, that earmarks this match as a ‘must win’ for both sides.

  • Does one good round constitute a comeback? MAYBE that would constitute the START of a comeback.

Then again it is only a comeback if you were anywhere near half good to start with.

So no I am not busy with a comeback then?

Don’t worry I don’t really know what I am on about either.
