Veteran hooker Gary Botha is back to captain the Blue Bulls in their Currie Cup clash against the Leopards in Potchefstroom on Saturday.

The stalwart started the last two matches off the bench, but has now fully recovered from the knee injury he suffered earlier in the competition.

A knock to the head forced Botha off the field during last week’s 24-21 victory over the Lions, but he has been passed fit to lead out the Bulls on Saturday.

Botha replaces Derick Kuün as captain and Chiliboy Ralepelle at hooker, with the latter moving to the bench.

Fudge Mabeta recovered from the shoulder injury that prevented him from starts against the Cheetahs and Lions and will partner Flip van der Merwe in the second row.

Juandré Kruger, who started the last eight matches in the No.5 jersey, moves to the side of the scrum for his 19th Blue Bulls appearance. He replaces flank CJ Stander, who will move back to the U21 side.

The backline remains the same, but scrumhalf Ruan Snyman and wing Hayden Groepes take over from Dustin Jinka and Stephan Dippenaar as the backline replacements.

The Blue Bulls coach, Frans Ludeke, said this match will be looked at as if it is at the knock-out stage.

15 Zane Kirchner,

  • Wow – a knockout game against the Leopards. Maybe he’s confusing knock-out with promotion-relegation

  • @Rob

I would have thought that now was the ideal opportunity to rest some players.

But to be honest, the guy did try it against the Pumas and paid dearly for it!

  • How they justify dropping Chilli is beyond me. I think he should head out as clearly they don’t rate him.

  • Lions of WP: Liebenberg will leave by the end of next year, and in any event Deon Fourie is lightweight.
