Springbok captain John Smit has been ruled out of the year-end tour following neck surgery.
Smit underwent a successful operation to repair a chronic cervical disc in Durban on Wednesday morning. Springbok team doctor Craig Roberts said the procedure was carried out to ensure that the disc did not get progressively worse.
It will also ensure John’s availability for the Springboks and the Sharks for the 2011 season. Confirming the success of the procedure, Roberts said: “The timing was right for John to undergo surgery as he will now have a prolonged period of recovery in advance of the new season.
Smit, who has been on the Springbok conditioning programme, will be sidelined for three months and is therefore not available for the Springbok tour to Europe in November and December.Tweet
