Well, another big highveld game, another loss. It was difficult to rate the players, especially the forwards from my seat in the stands so credit must go to Rob for helping me out a bit with these ratings.

1. Pat Cilliers 6/10
Another good, solid display from Pat, I didn’t see him much from my viewpoint high in the stands and for a prop, this is a good sign.

2. Craig Burden 6/10
Was a handful in open play as usual but did tend to go missing from the rucks in the second half as did most of the forwards to be honest.

3. Eugene van Staden 6/10
Did not have anywhere near as good a scrumming performance and did quite a bit of ball-carrying to bash his team over the advantage line.

4. Steven Sykes 7/10
Again, didn’t see the big guy that much which is a good sign for an “enforcer” type lock. Rob assures me he had a good game.

5. Alistair Hargreaves 5/10
Played a bit too much in the backline and might need to tighten his game up a bit, perhaps he has been watching Matfield’s play too much.

6. Keegan Daniel 5/10
Keegs needed to get stuck in at the rucks and not just float around the backline, we missed him there and suffered too many turnovers as a result.

7. Willem Alberts 6/10
Willem was his usual industrious self but did not make us much of an impact as he did in recent weeks, solid game from the big guy though.

8. Ryan Kankowski 3/10
Kanko didn’t have the worst game but his influence on the match meant 14 points to the Lions and 7 for the Sharks lost. Firstly by passing the ball to Doppies, he was responsible for a 14 point turnaround with the Jaco Taute scoring and secondly his yellow card was probably what ultimately cost the Sharks the game.

9. Charl McLeod 6/10
He tries so hard and sometimes too much. He was a threat at times and other times he cycled the ball too slowly while he also has a tendency to run away from support.

10. Pat Lambie 5/10
Pat’s poor goalkicking cost the Sharks dearly while he was his usual calm and collected self in general play.

11. Lwazi Mvovo 6/10
Lwazi scored a great double (although the second one is a little questionable) but was shown up a bit on defence especially when the Lions launched their dangerous counterattacks from loose play.

12. Andries Strauss 6/10
Not a great 50th the game for Dries, not a horrible one either. He has never been a flashy player but is always consistent.

13. Stefan Terblanche 7/10
Another captain’s innings from Oom Stef, his kicking for touch and general centre play was very good. The Sharks backline clearly suffered when he left the field.

14. Odwa Ndungane 4/10
Rounded off a try but in general had a very poor game, often choosing to run into the man instead of swinging the ball when there were overlaps.

15. Louis Ludik 6/10
Ludik had a really good attacking game, ran hard and was a real threat with ball in hand. Got caught out of position a few times when the Lions countered.

16. Kyle Cooper
Not on long enough to be rated

17. Wiehan Herbst
Not on long enough to be rated

18. Michael Rhodes
Not on long enough to be rated

19. Jacques Botes 5/10
Didn’t have as much of an effect on the breakdown as the team needed.

20. Rory Kockott
Not on long enough to be rated

21. Andre Pretorius
Not on long enough to be rated

22. Riaan Swanepoel 6/10
Was back to his bash it up style again and did not get the backline away as much as he would have wanted to although, to be fair he didn’t have much ball to do that.

  • Was really dissapointed in Lambie not pitching up. Jantjies up 1-0 for End-of-year tour just for wanting to play. Young Mr. Lambie, chances like these don’t come every day. Hope this won’t come back to bite you.

  • All in all the Sharks made too many mistakes and this cost them the game. It was so frustrating to watch so many chances being butchered near the tryline.

IMHO I thought Pat had a better game than Jantjies, and Pat didn’t have his mommy on the sidelines holding his hand and whispering him words of encouragement either…

I think the forwards need to come to the party a little bit more and you are right about Odwa. I am not sure if Odwa is good enough for SupeRugby, his pace is lacking for a wing and he has the dropsy’s way too often near the tryline. Could we clone Mvovo over the Christmas holidays??

But yeah I`ve been known to be a little bit biased.

His defense was good but when he conceded that try . . . sigh

  • morning all. i was also at the game and three things stood out for me. We did not use our changes in the first half, as we were at their goalline for about 4-5 times without scoring.

the second will be that the lions managed to keep our big ball cariers at bay (willem alberts, sykes and van staaden). this meant that we let the ball go to the backline too early, without proper space for them to play, and with that our backline looked planless. and in the cases when we should have used the backline( on their tryline) we used the forwards…

and lastly how we went into defence mode with 20-15min to go. we started to kick possesion away and didnt keep the ball well enough.

i`m just worried that the sharks form is going a tad backwards at the moment. we slapped the lions in durbs a few weeks back. but credit must go to the lions also. they defended REALLY well, and force errors by the sharks. i games past, with the sharks leading by 5 with 15min to go we never felt in danger of losing, but on saterday i could sence that a 5 point lead was not enough against the lions.

  • @lostfish (Comment 3) : odwa to double with ludik @fb??work on his kicking game ??(oops,no kicking coach ..that i know of..in the sharktank)..
orhow about the players falling back in greater numbers to give the fb more passing options to counter -attack with the ball from opposition kicks??? would require greater fitness..but it would have the added bonus of helping the defense(ie,more players falling back to defend..and then having more players back to counter-attack)

  • I thought Pat was waaay better than everyone seems to think. Goal-kicking was traff and there was one kick out on the full otherwise he was awesome. Not his fault the okes can’t finish.

And I disagree about Odwa. Thought he was bloody brilliant.

  • These ratings are so subjective….I wonder what the rating would have been had the Lions last try not been allowed? It was a bloody hard match and it’s probably the best the Lions have defended in the last 5 years. The Sharks did not finish well as they have the rest of the season. I tend to agree with TT that this loss probably came at a good time for the Sharks but there is nothing to panic about. Outsiders seem to think this was the best matches of the CC so far this year and even though the Sharks lost I tend to agree. I was a bloody hard uncompromising game on the Highveld which the Sharks lost towards the end. The Lions defended like trojans and I really hope they make the semi’s this year at the expense of the Bulls.

But some of our commentators are shocking, they try to be witty like the aussies/NZ guys, but they just can’t pull it off.

Hugh is drunk, Andy C needs to give every player’s whole history to us with every comment he makes…Bob, well I’m surprised he doesn’t drool on himself…and Stransky, well I’d rather listen to the aussies speak than Joel I-kicked-a-drop-once Stransky. Then Warren B sounds like he is at an audition for the new batman movie…

I like Pearce though, and Owen :)

  • These ratings are very subjective, I think Odwa had a great game, Lambie also had a good game considering the quality of the ball he got, Ludik probably deserves more points – he really got involved on Saturday. We lost the game at the rucks because we under estimated Derick Minnie’s strength at, we just didn’t have the numbers to ruck them off our ball. Remember when Mitch coached the All Blacks; they were putting 50 points past us and the Wallabies for fun. They were playing a very quick game and it relied on quick ball from rucks, we didn’t do our homework as the Lions under Mitch were always going to be formidable at ruck time. Our weakness was exposed and Plum acknowledged that (which is good), at least we have time to fix it.
Agreed, we need to rest Alberts this weekend. Seeing that we don’t want to move Lambie to 12, what about moving Adi to 12 (that’s if we don’t need him at 13)? With these laws he can be deadly with ball in hand.

  • No…Strauss did not loose the ball, Kanko passed a loose pass, which Doppies then slapped down before Strauss could touch it, he then picked it up, made a good run and put his players into space.

That pass should never have been made. If you make 50/50 passes, you can’t expect your players to magically catch those passes. Kanko should have held onto the ball and set up another ruck. That way, we probably would have scored.

The ball was slow, because the forwards didn’t clean out the ball effectively. There’s no use in trying to get the ball out quickly if you can get it out cleanly. I would have given Charl 7 or 8. Best player for the Sharks.

  • @Benna08 (Comment 53) : I guess not, but then, the question is, what was the point of the pass in the first place? Strauss was not in a better position than Kanko and would not have been able to make much with that possession anyway. If the pass would have been brilliant had they pulled it of, then I would have understood, but that pass was just never on…In fact, Kanko’s run was never on. He had players on his outside and should have gone wide instead of trying to do it on his own.

  • @Letgo (Comment 43) : Doppies didn’t slap it down, then pick it up, as far as I remember, he caught it cleanly, and broke two tackles before releasing the ball. Agree for the rest of your comment though. Loose passes lose matches. The spectacular pass looks really good when it comes of, and if a score results, you look like a hero, but when it fails, which it does more often than not, you just look silly.

  • Keegan, I don’t even really want to rate him. He had a really bad game. 5 is being nice, I think.

Way to lose in a big game like this. I think maybe he’s starting to feel a little invincible. Like he can’t do anything wrong. I hope this game was a little reality check for him. He was trying to make passes and runs that was almost just laughable. Botes should have replaced him for the second half and Rhodes should have come on for Alberts. You can’t keep him on the field for 80min every game. Plum needs to trust his bench a little.

  • I also thought Odwa played well. Got involved a few times and made a few nice runs. Better than Mvovo actually. Mvovo was great when he got the ball, but he just waited for the ball to come his way.

  • Oh and then Lambie. Like Rob said…he did two bad things. One, that conversion of Mvovo’s try…that was shocking. And then putting the ball out on the full when we finally got some possession in the second half.

Aside from those two things he had a great game.

  • @Letgo (Comment 62) : defensive alignment went to pot when Stef went off. Dries is not quick enough to defend the 13 channel, not against a side like the Lions with such quick outside backs. Look at Waylon’s try, for example. Jeepers, but Swannie did well to get there, but Dries should have made that tackle.

  • @robdylan (Comment 12) : I thought Pat was ok however he needs to sort out his kicking for posts or we need to find someone else to do the job I think Rory needs to step up and its tough for Charl who to be honest has gone a bit of the boil its either Rory or Andre with pat moving back to 12 but we cannot play with a 40% kicker and it has not only been this game The bulls and Cheetahs game he was also off target especially from the right hand side of the posts as viewed from behind This one and the bulls game Pat needs to wear the Costas name as in cost us the game
Having said that i think he is a brighter prospect than Jantjies who I think Pat outplayed in spite of what others on the site think

  • @robdylan (Comment 66) : we are really blessed with good loosies hey? with deysel back, my loosies will be: 8 Kanko, 7 Alberts and 6 Deysel, but for now i will pick 8 Kanko, 7 Alberts and 6 Botes and bring on Keegan as an impact players – he will thrive once the game loosen up. Botes just give you a more defencive stability and hit more ruck that would free up Sykes to run a bit more…

Kanko why rate him so little well he didn’t hv a good game but still is a SB and everybody has bad days :???:
and the young sharks still have to show themselves and its no use to rate them and give them negative thought they still hv to boot up to the snr players ;-)

let the coaching staff start doing their job and get rory`s passing game up to springbok level(not merely cc level).

  • @Ice (Comment 81) : I get that everyone wants an experienced kicker in the team, but we really shouldn’t do it at the expense of a well form backline. This back-line has done well for us this year. Making changes like this now will be a mistake.

I don’t know how long Stefan will be out, it seems he will be back for the play-offs. Maybe we should experiment with Kockett at 13 or 14 for the Leopards game. That would give as a good kicking option and I think Kockett will pleasantly suprise.

Plum won’t do anything close to this adventurous though, He’ll stick with Swannie and Dries. And probably try to get Lambie’s kicking up to standard.

I also like the idea of playing Rhodes as a lock. He’s a way better lock than he is a loosie, imo, and he will never get a decent playing chance with all the back-up loosies we have and all the other age group loosies coming through the ranks.

Get the 5 points from the Leopards game, hope WP gets no more than four this weekend that makes the gap between us 5.

WP will have to win with a bonus point and prevent us from getting any. Highly doubtful that Kockett would be able to mess things up that badly.

Lambie needs to get coaching, and get his kicks in order. Next year this particular problem will be solved with two good kickers, but if Lambie is serious about his Springbok aspirations and more specifically Fly-half aspirations, he’ll have to sort this out. They’re going to expect better kicking from him, otherwise he’ll be dropped for another Morne Steyn and no one wants that.
