In an interview with the Sharks website, coach John Plumtree has confirmed that loose forward Keegan Daniel will take up the captaincy reigns against the Leopards on Friday night.

Regular captain Stefan Terblanche will miss out on at least this game, after dislocating his elbow against the Lions. Daniel led the side after Terblanche departed the scene this weekend and will be given the opportunity to wear the armband officially for the first time. Plumtree says that Daniel has “showed some excellent leadership and consistent performances throughout the season, he understands the game from a strategic point of view and has the respect of his team-mates, especially with the intensity he brings.”

Plumtree has also concerned that lock Gerhard Mostert and prop Jannie du Plessis are in line for returns to the side, with speculation rife that Andre Pretorius may come into the number 10 jersey. That will mean a move into the centres for Patrick Lambie.

The team should be announced late on Wednesday, once a decision can be made on Ryan Kankowski’s availability. The Bok number 8 was cited for stamping against the Lions and needs to attend a SARU disciplinary hearing in Cape Town on Wednesday afternoon.

  • Like pretorius at 10 and lambie at 12,maybe this can bring the spark back.

  • What bout Alistair Hargreaves? There was all the banter the other day that he’d be a Bok captain. But he can’t captain his province?

  • @rugbypedia (Comment 2) : Hargreaves probably would be a better bet as he is pretty much guarenteed a starting spot. But Daniel has been starting in the currie cup and is the more seniour i think. He also gave what looked like a great speech in the game against the cheetahs. So i think he’ll be fine
