Sharks number eight Ryan Kankowski has been suspended from all forms of rugby for one week following a disciplinary hearing.

Kankowski was cited after stamping on Lions flanker Trevor Hall.Referee Jason Jaftha penalized Kankowski with a yellow card after the incident was flagged by the assistant referee Christie du Preez.

Kankowski pleaded not guilty. His defence argued that he was in the process of falling backwards which forced him to lift one leg to regain his balance and that resulted in him placing his foot on his opponent as he regained his balance.

A suspension of two weeks was recommended, but a ruling of one week was decided after ruling the Kankowski was impulsive in his behaviour and not reckless.

The updated team sheet for Friday night’s match against the Leopards is as follows:

The Sharks
15. Louis Ludik 14. Odwa Ndungane 13. Andries Strauss 12. Riaan Swanepoel 11. Lwazi Mvovo 10. Andre Pretorius 9. Charl McLeod 8. Keegan Daniel (capt) 7. Willem Alberts 6. Jacques Botes 5. Gerhard Mostert 4. Steven Sykes 3. Jannie du Plessis 2. Craig Burden 1. Eugene van Staden
Replacements 16. Kyle Cooper 17. Patric Cilliers 18. Anton Bresler 19. Michael Rhodes 20. Rory Kockott 21. Patrick Lambie 22. Luzuko Vulindlu

  • Okay so “goyougoodthing” had it spot on yesterday. A 1 week suspension is pretty uncommom, so if the decision was already known in some circles yesterday, why did SARU wait until today to announce it?

  • I know this will start a bit of a fight but the game of Rugby has gone soft. Looking at the replay. You can clearly see kanko loosing his balance. Secondly Trevor Hall was holding on to his ankle. Ai mis die ou dae

  • @Tommy Chilcott (Comment 4) : I also thought it was more a matter of him losing his balance, than him striking out at the player and the worst part is, that he barely touched the player. If he had struck out in anger wouldn’t he have done it with a little more force? He kinda fell to the back, stepped on the player briefly and then lifted his leg again when he had regained his balance.

I think this is a ridiculous ban and it’s even more ridiculous that Sharks fans agrees with the ruling. What the???

  • @Ice (Comment 8) : I don’t like it when the Sharks loose Ice. I especially don’t like it when bad refereeing has an influence on the result of big games like these. (I’m not even saying the result would have gone our way had we had proper officials, just saying they had a huge influence on the game.)

Mvovo’s try should not have been a try and had someone had enough brains to implement a proper system to make use of technology, this would never have had an influence on the game.

Instead we had a ref’s assistant that felt a little guilty and tried to make up for that mistake the rest of the match and then a try was allowed to hand the Lions the victory right at the end.

I’ll get better with time. It takes time, to get over a loss like that. Just give me time.

You bet, all my comments are aggressive.

  • @KSA Pink Shark © (Comment 13) : Um, yes. It’s a contact sport and if you’re lying underneath a guy, you gotta expect to be stepped on every now and then. But putting you foot down to balance yourself and stomping “To tread or trample heavily or violently on” or trampling “To beat down with the feet so as to crush, bruise, or destroy; tramp on” as the refs said, is two different things.

You guys believe that’s what Ryan did? Violently trample on the player or try to bruise or crush the player?

I don’t think so, in fact, I think the fact that the player on the ground was also pulling on his leg, might have had an effect on where that foot came down, but it never came down heavily.

Maybe we should ask the Lions player to show us the bruises from Ryan’s violent trample.

  • @diablo (Comment 66) : A high tackle is not dirty play, it’s dangerous play and almost never intentional. Any high tackle could result in a player seriously injuring himself.

But, if you unintentionally, step onto a players chest, without causing even a little bruise or (blou kol) and the incident is not seen as potentially dangerous or harmful, then it should not be penalized.

If Kanko’s intent was to hurt the guy, and he missed, then I would have even agreed with a ban, but there was no intent and that’s why he was not hurt.

  • @McLovin (Comment 81) : I think in this case Ryan’s intent is very subjective. I believe his intention was to balance himself and release himself from the player to get back to defense. Everyone else in the world thinks he wanted to “impolitely” tell the player not to hold on to him. And I still think I’m right. I believe Ryan, okay!

I am disputing the “barely touched the player” comment you made.

Frequent use of hyperbole is very dangerous. War1 did the same thing the other day when he mentioend how the Lions’ player had “repeatedly” punched one of our guys.

  • Seems to me rugby has become a soft man’s game. In the old days rucks were places where boots sorted things out, now we needs rules, whistles and yellow cards for hands in the ruck.

    Bring back the boot.

  • @diablo (Comment 109) : Oh for sure, so no worries there. Just saying, a lot of the new laws and whistle blowing have come from the no ruck rules that apply. Not saying a Mexted Sidestep or Shelford Shuffle is the right thing always, but there were no hands in those rucks. :-)

  • @Scooby55 (Comment 115) : Watch the full version and you will clearly see Kanko putting his foot down on the player.

I also thought the carding was harsh when I saw the youtube clip because you don’t see him putting his foot down on the players chest. I changed my mind when I looked at the full version again. I guess as someone else suggested some of the frames have been lost in the compression of the video.
