It’s been in the planning stages for 2 years….first the dates did not suite us, then the tables were fully booked. This year however, I e-mailed Maria early…”please find out when the breakfast are…” We got the date, got the table! Like a flash the plane tickets were paid….Finally! We were on our way!!
Tuesday, 28 September 2010. Bags packed. Outfit packed. Armed with 3 jerseys and a ball, white and black permanent markers (two of each, just in case) and about 50 Sharksworld Business cards. Off to work, and 12h00 could not come soon enough. Jet off to Lanseria, got on the plain. Durbs, Here I come!!!
My road was not without a few laughable bumps. The driver of the shuttle company that took me to Sibaya was so friendly. When we got to the lodge, I paid him the fair. After I insisted on a receipt, he was not so friendly anymore. I had to get my luggage from the boot myself…”could you at least open the boot??? Duhhh..”
I had a few sunset G&T’s in my room, watched some TV. Tried to make up my mind about which black top and which black slacks to wear. Yeah I know, sounds boring, but I do believe in accessorizing. Platinum wig, white feather boa, pink Breast Cancer ribbon, pink nail polish, cocktail top hat….THAT’s how you whoosh up an outfit, dolls! Vanessa and Janine popped in when they arrived from Joszi, and off to bed after CSI Miami I went.
Wednesday 29 September, 05h20. I am up! Phoned my husband to wish him a Happy Birthday! YES!! He even let me go on his birthday. Woman alone. Surrounded by SHARKS players, on his birthday. How cool is that?? (Thanks, Lief! )
At 6H25, Me2 (Mamma Shark) phoned me and said she’s waiting! Off to the venue. I seemed to have been the only one that went through some “trouble” to get noticed! . We got our table and immediately the Lions game of the past weekend was discussed and dissected….yeah guys, you read right – these chicks do have a passion for the game, not just the players! It was actually a revelation, and I smiled to myself…rugby is alive in the Female world!
Then I got a tap on my shoulder….I looked around, staring into this blinding light and somehow managed to make out two guys standing there and then “we would like to interview you”…”ME??” came my reply. “Ohhh F…” was my first thought, but I was not gonna let my moment of fame slip away! I stuttered and stumbled and forgot that I could have another “take” – so if there is anything useful that they can use – you guys better watch “Sharkbite” on the 10th of October, as Icey MIGHT be on the show!
The morning opened with the Sharkettes giving a performance and the hosts for the morning, Aaron McIllroy and Lisa Bobbert had us in stitches! Then the big moments (read Players) arrived. The anticipation of who was going to sit at our table was unbelievable! And lucky table nr 25 got no other than the upcoming wing-sensation Lwazi Mvovo!!!! (He is gorgeously built with the most beautiful smile!).
I have to mention that we were very surprised when Lionel Mapoe also attended, and was greeted by the crowd with loud cheering and clapping. Shame – in the middle of the proceedings I got a mail from Rob about the outcome of the court hearing, and I could not help to think if he also found out while being so generously welcomed in the midst of the Sharks family…it must have been very disappointing. Another disappointment was that Patrick Lambie was not there, but Kanko’s presence, who we all thought would be at the hearing, made up for that…to an extend anyway.
Girls – this paragraph is just for you: Check out one Mr. Mark Richards – he is in the squad, but I cannot recall seeing him play before…he is very, very soft on the eyes…..
Operation signature hunt started in full blow after the players arrived! Armed with my jerseys, ball and pens and the camera, me and Maria (I have to say, she is a treat – if ever you have seen a ‘blonde” Italian, that’s Maria! Give her a plain mik-en-druk camera, or you will have your camera’s settings adjusted for life!)
Most of the players commented on my outfit and that I look really good! “tssssssst” Adi said he would not mind my feather boa wrapped around his neck and all the players were surprised that I am one of the lucky pink jersey owners! Stefan Terblance even looked at the “serial number” on it to see if it was not counterfeit! I sat on Beasts lap with my boa wrapped around his neck! (I hope his new wife does not read this!)
We played games, the players did musical chairs. There was a question and answer sections. I have changed my mind about the two Dup Divas! Bissie is sharper than a minora blade and Jannie is a real nice guy!! Off course one got the odd question from the Ladies that were inappropriate to say the least (we all know woman can be real naughty – but there’s a thin line between funny and common where that is concerned – thank goodness Charl McLeod is not only quick behind a scrum and his quick thinking and answer saved the moment).
I won a years subs to the Sharks mag, Mamma Shark won a wallet and a watch. The prizes were fantastic! Police watches, a trip on the Rovos rail etc.
I had a quick chat with Jean Deysel and he did confirm that he does read Sharksworld. Even asked me who “I” was on SW!!?? (Come on knees….stay strong!!). From JP I heard that he is not going “ANYWARE”.. Sykesie got engaged after the Super 14, Lwazi gave me his e-mail for an interview….sjoe…what else??? There was just so much! O, ja!! Willem Alberts biceps is really bigger than my thighs!!! Adi said he’ll be back after this weekend!!!!! And as you know by now, Stefan is staying for another year!
My hat goes off to Stefan and his team. (After Maria had my camera, somehow my picture with Stefan came out blurred – we took about 7 (no I am not joking) photo’s and then she got her mik-and-druk and took another…all with him having a laugh and smile and not one complaint). They are an incredible bunch of guys! They signed memorabilia like crazy – not once bitching or moaning (out loud that is!) and manage to still have a quick chat and even a genuine smile for the camera! I managed 21 signatures on each of the 3 jerseys and 14 signatures on the ball! Not bad hunting, I’d say!! So hopefully we did not jeopordise their handling skills tonight – I am sure they had arthritist in te wrist the next day!
Needless to say we have booked our table for next year….I am not EVER gonna miss this event AGAIN if I can help it!
I sat staring out the window…with a sad nostalgic feeling overwhelming me…I feel the power of the green machine….gravity pushing me back into my seat….so much in so little time…I don’t want to go, I was “HOME”, I belong here damnit!..….alas..Jozie is calling, till next year….I’m a jetsetter….
