The rumour mill

As most of you know, I attend the Sharks matches on behalf of Sharksworld, sitting in the press room with all the journalists and commentators. These are some of the stories that were discussed that I thought might be of interest to you.

Firstly, and most worryingly, was the topic of JP Pieterson. Talk was that the Springbok winger has an offer on the table from the Lions. Most of know that, yes, but the worst part of all this was that the Sharks are not in a postion to match the extreme offer made. If this is the case, the Sharks could be in real danger in the wing depth department.

Secondly, Rory Kockott was discussed, and whether he will be with the Sharks come next year. Talk is that a month ago, when we broke the story that Kockott might be going to Western Province, the scrumhalf already has an offer from the Cape Town based team, and has had the offer for more than a month now. Kockott has apparently mae it clear that moving was not his first choice.

Thats all for this week folks, until next week, Ferguson is over and out.

  • To think I had to see it on WTR . . .

    But thanx for the update.

Rory should see the Magical City today . . . he`ll sign immediately!
But if the Sharks really invested in Hoffman, I don`t think he has much of an option. He`ll have to come to Cape Town.

JP worries me though. Good wings are hard to find.

Sharks management really needs to do something about this.

  • Thanks Ricardo. Christo Buchner corroborated your JP story in Beeld this morning. I’m gonna try call him later and see if he’s willing to talk about it.

As for Rory, well… I don’t know. He did well when he came on last night. Would be so sad to see him go, but if he’s not seeing eye to eye with the coach, maybe it’s better all round

  • @Jarson (Comment 7) : Read it as well. Guess we should just accept the fact that the Sharks were so busy fighting a losing battle with Mapoe they forgot all about JP`s contract.

Result: Instead of getting a promising wing we lose a bok wing.

come on JP, black and white forever!!!

  • We love JPP and really hope that decides to stay but if he wants to leave then he can go. Our policy when it comes to players has always been simple – you want to play for the Sharks, we will do our best to ensure that you play for us (if you are good enough), if you don’t want to play for the Sharks anymore, it was great and we wish you the best. The Bulls are successful because the players love each other and love the Bulls so much that they are willing to die on the pitch. Money is important but not the only motivator, a player’s heart needs to be in it. At the end of JS’s contract next year we can pay guys like JPP & Kanko what they deserve.

  • I really don’t care where a player comes from originally, or where he went to school. This is a supposedly professional era, and player movement is quite acceptable, either once they are out of contract, or if still in contract, they are bought out of said contract. I do, however, have a problem with trying to find loopholes in contracts, and not honouring the contracts. Everyone has done that occaionally, but sharks are certainly the current leaders in that field.

‘maybe we should get Mjekevu from the Lions then?’

Just like that, do you know how long his contract is for? Do you care? Lets just get him!

  • On a complete different note: Potgieters yellow card. I think people are way to harsh on CJoubert. If I was in his position – would have given the card too. Infact that wa my immediate reaction: “yellow!!!!”, only with the replay one could see Potgiter had no intention of tripping the guy as he was focused on the ball (or perhaps he is a helluve good actor  ) I cannot remember where Joubert was, but most probably behind play, so there is no ways he could have tell at that moment if it was not intentional…your thoughts?

  • Durban matric pupil Chad Le Clos won South Africa’s first medal of the Commonwealth Games, bursting through from nowhere in the final lap to bag the 200m butterfly gold in Delhi on Monday.

Swimming in lane two, Le Clos upstaged a field that included teammate Sebastien Rousseau and England swimmers Paul Rock and Peter Roebuck.

The 18-year-old Le Clos, who competed in his first European galas only last year, was well out of the top three throughout the race, although Rouseau was third going into the final turn.

Le Clos is a natural sportsman, having represented KwaZulu-Natal in soccer at under-12 level.

But when he went to high school, he turned fulltime to swimming – his first love.

His surname, by the way, is pronounced Le Clo.

  • @bergshark (Comment 90) : The problem with U21′s, is that they don’t stay U21 forever… and I guess if you see your path blocked by at least 2 players in the Senior side you’re better off moving to another Province than trying to get noticed at Club level?

  • @bergshark (Comment 90) : jip, just need reinach, the centres, most of the pack and the twins to stay… hey, thats almost the whole side….

@Jarson (Comment 89) : jip, i`m from potch and heard the news just yesterday. i actually hoped they could lure a more high profiled coach, but boshoff shoul do… i think the leopards are making themselves ready to play in 1st division as i heard about 3-5 of their player already signed with other provinces and no signings for the leopards until now. worrying signs fot them. just wish SA could field 8 TOP sides that can be competitive…

  • @VanWilder (Comment 92) : Or… all the teams play each other once in one competition ala S14, there bye giving all the teams more exposure. The CC’s format is going to change anyways, I think from 2012 forwards if I remember correctly.

  • @Jarson (Comment 94) : Are the Kings going to be handed a Premier Division spot before their introduction to Superrugby… or are they going to have to work their way in like everyone else? It could be quite wierd to see a 1st Division CC side playing in Superrugby. At least the Lions and Cheetahs won’t be bottom of the log then
