Sharksworld have learnt that JP Pieterson is willing to stay at the Sharks despite numerous offers from other South African teams.

JP Pieterson has offers from the Bulls as well as the Lions, but is willing to stay with the Sharks. The offer from the Lions is believed to be quite substantial and despite the Sharks offer being lower, the Springbok winger has decided to stay with the Sharks.

The flyer’s contract with the Sharks comes to an end on the 31st October 2010. More on this as it develops.

  • Guys, this is the best info we have so far. It’s by no means a cast-iron guarantee of anything. Word is, though, that Polla is happy and doesn’t want to go anywhere, even for more money.

This is good news. One wonders who else in Black and White the Lions are going to approach.

  • Good question VanWilder.
Well done JPP. This is great news, shows what a good union we are. Guys want to stay for less cash than they are being offered by other unions. So when guys leave because they say they are tired of being taken for a ride by Puff Daddy or want to play for another country because they competition is too tough here, they really mean it. Who can blame Lionel Richie for wanting to stay? We now need to secure Kanko….and Lionel Richie.

I don’t think anyone really disputes Megatron’s point that JPP must also look after his future – if it is a substantial increase, then he must seriously consider it. I know I would.

  • The Lions have their fair share of potent wings, I don’t understand why they would be looking at JP so intently anyway?!

JP must also consider where his best chances are of winning Currie Cups and Super 15′s. Why get paid more but never experience the joy of winning another trophy? Some things are worth more than money.

  • Richard, the Lions are trying to announce themselves again, now that they have new financial backing.

They have a good coach, some talented youngsters and a lot of dough. What they lack is a real drawcard player, to win games for them, but probably even more, create a buzz (like Beckham).

Spending your biggest amount on a young wing (as opposed to flyhalf or prop) who will be away for the Boks a fair bit over the next year especially, is not a good buy from a playing perspective, but more of a marketing ploy IMO.

  • @Megatron (Comment 57) : There’s a lot to take into consideration when taking a new job, not just the money. Maybe if you’re going to get paid double what you are now the money will have a bigger influence on your decision, but yeah, if you like your job, your boss, your house, the area you live in, your current lifestyle, then going for just money and losing all these other things, might not be such a smart idea.

In this case it could even influence his selection for the Boks. You have to weigh up the positives with the negatives, and maybe JP thought what he had here with the sharks is more valuable than what the Lions can offer him.

We’ll see though, as you said, he hasn’t signed yet.

  • One thing to remember is that even if the offer from the Lions are bigger than the Sharks can afford, it doesnt mean that they cant increase his salary. For instance: Current is R50k/m
    Lions offer R80k/m
    Sharks can afford R70k/m.

  • Personaly I think we are wasting time on JPP , I rate the player bigtime but as someone mentioned earlier its a marketing ploy and he’ll be away with the Boks most of the time. I’d rather go out and spend some cash on a big Islander wing. They are out there and I’m certain they will not be demanding a truck load of cash.

  • @Charlie (Comment 88) : i agree, with 5 unions/franchises (plus the Kings if they get their hands on some cash) being competitive (financially and on the field) the only losers would be the cheetahs/griquas who will not keep up with the financial strain as it will become. you will now see younger players getting lots of cash to sign for a union as the difference between the unions will be fringe players and youngsters coming through. Not so much exciting times for the sharks as for the lions, but in general exciting times for SA rugby imo. the team that contracts the better squad and youngsters will still win cups…

if some of the sharks want to sign with the lions, let them, it will force us to bring in youngsters and fringe players wanting to play.

with all respect, but i think the lions will have a look at a few high profiled coloured players, as SARU and ABSA already said that they are not happy. All the unions will scramble to get their numbers right. Beast, JP, Mapoe and Basson?(Another disclaimer: my post is not meant to spur on racial comments or abuse, i am only stating an my opinion) If that is the case, Ralepele or Maku would be great singings for the lions.
