With only three Rounds left in the 2010 ITM Cup, time is running out for sides to secure Semi Final spots for 2010 and First Division Rugby for 2011. After Wellington dropped out of the top half of the table last week their visit to North Harbour has all the hallmarks of a huge match, as will be Bay of Plenty’s visit to Tasman and Auckland’s visit to Counties-Manukau. However without doubt the match of the Round is the Ranfurly Shield defence by Southland against arguably the strongest province in the world.

Game 67 Otago (20) v Canterbury (35) Prediction: Canterbury by 10-15 pts
Game 68 Taranaki (23) v Southland (6) Prediction: Southland by 10-15 pts

Table Movement

In the ‘Top 4’ Waikato replaces Auckland. The big mover of the last three rounds is Bay of Plenty who continue their climb up the ladder. The big loser this week is Wellington who slips to the bottom half of the table.

Round 11 Match Previews

Game 71 Hawke’s Bay v Northland Prediction: Hawke’s Bay by 5-10 points

Two evenly matched teams who both enjoy keeping the ball in hand could result in a points fest. Hawke’s Bay’s star is on the rise and coupled with home advantage should get them an entertainingly fought result.

Game 72 Waikato v Otago Prediction: Waikato by 15-20 points

Waikato look far too strong for the Southerners and look set to keep the boys on the scoreboard busy.

Game 73 Taranaki v Manawatu Prediction: Taranaki by 15-20 points

This maybe closer than many expect, but Taranaki will not take their visitors lightly and will be well motivated to secure all 5 points on offer.

Game 74 Counties-Manukau v Auckland Prediction: Auckland by 10-15 points

A big local derby which Auckland always wins. Pressure is on the big boys, who can’t afford to drop this one away or they will be quickly slipping away from being ‘Top 4’ contenders.

Game 75 Southland v Canterbury Prediction: Canterbury 5-10 points

This is the match of the Round which pits 1st v 2nd. Southland kept their powder dry last week and should come out all guns a blazing. I think we may however have new holders of the ‘Log of Wood’ at the end of it all when all the dust has settled.

Game 76 North Harbour v Wellington Prediction: Wellington 0-5 points

Wellington will be the most desperate team in the Round and may steal this one by the skin of their teeth

Game 77 Tasman v Bay of Plenty Prediction: Bay of Plenty 0-5 points

Another very close match to call which could go either way, but the form side may just have enough to get them up for their fifth win in a row.

  • Southland v Canterbury.

Canterbury: 15 Sean Maitland, 14 Tu Umaga-Marshall, 13 Robbie Fruean, 12 Sonny Bill Williams, 11 Telusa Veainu, 10 Colin Slade, 9 Andy Ellis (captain), 8 Nasi Manu, 7 Matt Todd, 6 Sam Whitelock, 5 Isaac Ross, 4 Luke Romanao, 3 Peter Borlase, 2 Steve Fualau, 1 Wyatt Crockett.
Replacements: 16 Paul Ngauamo, 17 Andrew Olorenshaw, 18 Ash Parker, 19 Brendon O’Connor, 20 Willi Heinz, 21 Stephen Brett, 22 Ryan Crotty.

Look at that midfield. Fruean and Williams have a combined weight of 217kg.

  • Best the defenders get the padding out and PLENTY of it.

All Blacks ready to unleash 217kg centre combination

THE age of the power midfielder could be set to reach a new level in the All Blacks, with Robbie Fruean widely tipped to join Canterbury teammate Sonny Bill Williams on the end-of-season tour.

Together they weigh in at an imposing 217 kilograms, a statistic that must have some of the lightweight combinations in the north trembling in their boots

Fruean, 22, is an imposing 109kg, slightly heavier than Williams, whose chiselled physique has already won him more than a few admirers on the New Zealand rugby scene. Alone they’re intimidating; together they’re downright scary.

The pair even dwarf the first-choice All Black midfield of Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith, who tip the scales at a collective 197kg. The skilful Smith is the featherweight of the quartet at 95kg wringing wet. The All Blacks have long had a liking for power in their midfield, with influential figures such as Joe Stanley, Frank Bunce, Tana Umaga and now Nonu demonstrating that muscle as much as hustle can be decisive in the centre pairing.

Usually, however, tandems have included one less physical presence who has contributed more in the area of skill and kicking. But with the early success of the Williams-Fruean pairing at Canterbury, the drumbeats are growing louder for the combination to be retained as the back-up pairing in the All Blacks. Williams is a cert to tour. But Fruean has emerged as a possible back-up centre for Smith after his own outstanding ITM Cup campaign, yet another shoulder injury to Richard Kahui and the absence of Isaia Toeava, who has yet to return from a hip injury.

Plus, it makes sense to pair Williams – hardly a seasoned campaigner in rugby – with someone he knows. Then the All Blacks coaches could start the international education of two midfield powerhouses, who might just be the pairing of the future.

Fruean said the prospect of teaming up with Williams was intriguing and would take the concept of the super-sized midfield to a new level.

Fruean’s own dramatic progress helps him enter that discussion. He had scored a competition-leading eight tries before last night’s clash against Otago, for which he had been assigned a bench role to lighten his load. But he has also improved his distribution game, running well off the creative Williams.

”Teams obviously see him as a threat, they get drawn towards him and that gives me more opportunity to run off him and take those gaps that show up,” Fruean said. ”He’s a great guy to feed off. He’s always working hard; always trying to get his work-rate up. He’s a great player.”
