Lions coach stabbed

Lions coach John Mitchell was stabbed in a housebreaking incident on Saturday night. Mitchell spent the night in hospital on Saturday after being stabbed twice in his house, but has been released from hospital and will be back at work at the Union’s offices on Monday.

The Rugby Union confirmed the incident in a late night press release on Sunday, in an incident which will do South Africa’s crime reputation no favours abroad. The incident happened at around 10pm on Saturday night when the home shared by Mitchell and his fellow Kiwi Wayne Taylor — the Lions conditioning coach — was broken into by two home invaders.

Apparently Mitchell heard a commotion in the house on Saturday night and, believing it to be Taylor playing a prank on him, inadvertently tackled one of the intruders. A second man then allegedly stabbed Mitchell in the arm and thigh. Taylor was not injured in the attack.

We wish John Mitchell a speedy recovery.

  • Wishing John quick recovery!!
The Lions players might escape punishment for their poor performance on Friday due to this…..or it might just have pissed him off so much that the punishment might be even worse.

  • I don’t know about the rules and posting Rob. But we shouldn’t have to duck and dive on facts when they apply to any kind of tragic event that affects rugby. And this one affects rugby. It also sucks. South Africa really needs help when it comes to quality coaching. This is a rugby issue. Not a political problem. So it is of course a great pity that something like this should happen. A poor example gets set for other potential talent overseas that may have considered coming in to help lift the IQ of coaching across the board. I guess it leads to an even bigger question, why should a country so rich in rugby talent, not have quality coaching available? More often than not we seem to be a few brain cells shy of our competition. What’s with that?

This is a rugby issue. Not a political problem.

If that is the case, then neither was the Bees incident, which was not allowed on SW. But because one little bit of info has been left out of the general reporting of this incident, it is fair game on this site. Ridiculous, but true.

Awful news about Mitchell and for the lions imo. for one i do not think he will leave, but it could be a possibility and this COULD have an impact on players they have approached to come to jhb. it should not be a factor, but i`m sure if a player is pondering a move to jhb, this could sway a 50/50 dicision.

i wish you a speedy recovery John.

Then either come back here and admit you were wrong, or rather sod off and blog there if that’s the sort of banter you prefer. I’m tired of defending the choice I’ve made here. The policy from here on is FIFO… fit in or f*** off.

I’m with you here Robd , There are other sites where everyone can froth at the mouth and blog all the expletives that usually accompany this kind of event.

I will say that everybody knows the risks of living in Joburg and I’m damn sure Mitchell knew too.Perhaps now the Lions can arrage for a permenant CPO to accompany him around.Small price to pay.

It doesn’t make it right but that the reality with it and my answer to people of Joburg is the same as Robd for the site .

  • Quote from John Mitchell:
“I am still very committed to the Lions. This is a beautiful country and I consider myself fortunate to have the opportunity to work here. I won’t let this deter my commitment or passion for the team, but I need to make sure that I am totally secure in where I live, as it is not at all nice waking up and having to defend your life.”
