Fans are fickle masters, so after a very poor game we were soundly thumped by the side we were to play in the next week. Durban was like a morgue no one wanted to talk rugby. It was a bit like the Mad magazine guy who has a rain cloud over his head and he is only one being rained upon whilst everyone else is in the sun.
People were saying we were going to lose big time and it was a waste of a season and there should not be any Currie Cup finals. Doom and Gloom everywhere.
No plan, no hope.
Now I’m not talking about 2010… I’m talking 1990 we all know what happened! Mac had a plan. I still have that game on tape and have vivid pictures burnt into my brain of Watson scoring that famous try. Suddenly everything was sunny skies, braaivleis and rugby.
Then came the parade. Fantastic day it was, as if we had won the world’s biggest lotto. Durban ground to a halt and the open bus carrying our heroes came down the street. Everybody loved everybody else and all was well in our world. Even my wife who hates the divine game came to the parade. Fans are fickle masters.
In 2010 the situation is exactly the same. Now as then fans are fickle and the loss at Problems – sorry Province – has left us devastated and without hope. We have drawn the only side we can’t beat. I mean them whose names must be said with reverence and in whispers. What chance do we have? They have Bakkies, Victor, Morne – they even have Meisiekind, not to mention the fabulous one called Shadow-he’s called that because that’s all you see when he scores the try; he is so quick all you see is the Shadow.
Who do we have that can win this battle for us?
22 MEN WHO WILL LIVE FOR THE RIGHT TO WEAR THE BLACK AND WHITE, that’s who.
As good as the Bulls are they don’t have Beast or Bizzy or Jannie, Boks all 3 and they will not go down without shedding blood which will be red and not blue. They don’t have Keegan or Oupa, men who will fight to their last breath! They don’t have Lambie or Mvovo, men of vision pace and guile They don’t have the OddOne whose body takes a hammering week in and week out They don’t have Big Vic who like a tractor plows over the opposition They don’t have them!!!
They also don’t have men who have been in this type of situation before and come out victors.
Plum and Hugh have been there before………….. the 1990 game when against all odds we won against the invinceabulls and they had Naas!!! The sweet memory lingers.
Something else that the Bulls don’t have…………………….. you and me.
So what have we to fear?
My friend Richard says the odds on a Shark victory are good.
Be brave fans and take the bookies money but over everything else cheer your side on to victory. Let us roar them to victory !
