Welcome to the last team of the week for the league phase of the ABSA Currie Cup. You will note that there are no Sharks players in the team this week, so you cannot say that this site is prejudice or biased.

The battle of the fullback of the tournament is hotting up, with three fullback in contention. Kirchner takes this weekend after Daniller and Taute have swopped the jersey over previous weeks. Jean de Villiers showed what a talented backline player he is being picked on the wing. De Villiers is one of three backline players to be nominated in every team submitted. The other two are Juan de Jongh (at 12) and Bjorn Basson (at 11), and these two aren’t new to being in the team at all. The worlds greatest 13, Jacque Fourie, playing in his WP Currie Cup debut, made it straight into the team at 13 of course.

The 9 and 10 positions were the most debated and least predictable of the backline, with four nominations at 10 and three nominations at 9. Narrow victories go to Elgar Watts and Francois Hougaard. This is a first entry for Elgar Watts, congratulations!

Duane Vermeulen makes a come back into the team after a fair amount of nominations. In the 7 jersey we had a draw, and in the case of a draw, third party input is taken from the team, and the lucky winner between Juan Smith and Dewald Potgieter is Juan Smith. Another returning Bok in Schalk Burger comes into the team to wear the 6 jersey.

The famous pairing of Victor Matfield and Bakkies Botha take our lock positions this week, and it really is no surprise.

Another Pumas player debuts this week, in the form of Ashley Buys. Congratulations! We had a second draw, which is quite uncommon, in the hooker position. It was a straight two way fight between Chilliboy Ralapelle and Adriaan Strauss. The tie was decided in the same way and Adriaan Strauss walked away with the honour wearing the 2 jersey. Coenie Oosthuizen commanded his jersey back from in form Sharks player Eugene van Staden, who did not play this round.

As you all can see, we now have a sponsor for the Team of the Week, and with a sponsor comes a prize. The competition we will be running will work as follows; at the end of the Currie Cup anybody can enter their team of the Currie Cup. The person that gets their team spot on with the team we select, wins two cases of Windhoek Lager. Thanks must go to Windhoek for their participation.
