Sing dammit, sing your side to victory

On Wednesday night I had the privilege of drinking a beer or 17 with the TWG12 Jean De Villiers when a friend mentioned singing at Newlands.

We chatted about how the last time the newlands fans were that vocal was in the Super 14 semi final against the Waratahs, and that was mainly because the game was almost shut out already.

WP/Stormers fans have a bad habit of only really breaking out the chants when our team is on the verge of winning the game and even then its mainly WP JOU LEKKA DING WP JOU LEKKA DING , on Saturday the chants got unpacked early in the first half and I for one had goosebumps then and have goosebumps now just thinking about it.

Jean said having the fans singing at full voice really lifts a team and recalled a game for Munster where they were in a must win game against Northampton Saints and were a man down in the scrum because Paul O’ Connel had been sent off and they had a scrum on their goalline with time running out on the clock, the Munster fans broke out into song at the top of their voices and Jean could see tears in the eyes of some of the backline guys, the forwards with one man down won the scrum, got clean ball to the backs who managed to clear the ball into the Saints half and the go and also win the ensuing lineout. All because the fans singing inspired them to do something special.

So to the WP fans, Sing Dammit, Sing the boys into the final.

Dis ‘n WP ding, ‘n lekka lekka WP ding, en ons kannie warrie nie, want ons gaan weeeeeeen.. !

  • @Pokkel (Comment 2) : Even worse than leifling is the Cheetahs chant. They play a CHEE over the microphone for the crowd to say TAHS.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 1) : I was there last weekend and the reason they sing is because 80% of the WP supporters were pished by half-time. I dunno what kind of booze regulations they got going there, but my team was booed, the reserves warming up were booed, Pat Lambie was booed and I was barraged with insults for wearing another jersey. What a friendly place.

  • @wpw (Comment 9) : No worries dude. But I for one hope that rugby eventually moves to the Cape Town Stadium in Greenpoint. I know you WP guys have a soft spot for Newlands but it’s looking shabby and attracting some serious yobs.

  • @CapeShark (Comment 12) :

I don’t agree with the move.

We own our stadium and there’s not enough suites at the CT stadium.

We will also have to pay rent AND more than likely share profits with the City of CT. Nee dankie!!

    Hulle kan gaan vlieg!!

  • @wpw (Comment 14) : Yeah, feel bad for the behaviour by some of the fans on Saturday and the booing is an old bad habit at Newlands but to say 80% of the fans with pssed is a bit off and im not keen on the move.

The Sharks arent exactly jumoing over the road to Moses Mabida now are they?

  • I’d love it if South African rugby fans adopted a singing culture (and I don’t mean blasting ‘Liefling’ over the stadium PA system).

  • @CapeShark (Comment 12) : Yeah I`m not as up to date as Claytie but I think the issue with the new stadium is that the box owners at Newlands won`t be accommodated or something.
Big money involved. But the parking issue should improve if they decide to move.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 21) : Agreed, in the short term a lot of shareholders stand to lose out, but I just can’t help but feel that in the long term moving rugby to greenpoint would be in the best interests of the city. Don’t get me wrong, I love Cape Town and I’m very proud of this city, but Newlands is just a complete pain to access and exit and it’s looking a little lacklustre these days.

  • @CapeShark (Comment 23) : never been there but from some moaning at this site I gather that parking is a huge issue. But I guess something that one can sort out with clever park & ride or park and walk – seems to be a new trend in joburg.
