Welcome to the final Windhoek Lager Team of the Week for this season before the competition officially starts. This week we see only two teams represented, obviously being the winning teams from the weekend of semi finals.

The WP back three of Conrad Jantjes, Gio Aplon and Bryan Habana make a fantastic Springbok combination. All three looked great against the Cheetahs, with Habana and Aplon both shutting out their respective positions, being the only players nominated.

The centre pairing is a mixed bag, with Sharks captain Stefan Terblanche proving he can still play with the big boys and Springbok Jean de Villiers joining inside him. Terblanche was nominated in all teams bar one. In the important pivot positions we see an all Sharks combination, Pat Lambie and Charl McLeod dominating the voting.

The loose forwards are WP dominated as Duane Vermeulen retains his place from last week, and WP captain Schalk Burger taking the number six jersey. Willem Alberts, a regular Team of the Week player, claims his 7 jersey back after a few weeks off. As a matter of interest, Willem Alberts was nominated in every single team.

The Sharks lock pairing grabbed the 4 and 5 jerseys after dominating the Bulls locks of Bakkies and Victor. Well done lads, you thoroughly deserve it! The Sharks props also made it into the team, with Beast Mtawarira and Jannie du Plessis taking the 1 and 3 jerseys respectively. Deon Fourie deservedly gets the hooker spot after a great game against the Cheetahs.

Details regarding the competition will follow within the next few days, where every reader will be able to win two cases of Windhoek Lager by simply nominating your Windhoek Lager Team of the Currie Cup. Thank you must go to Windhoek Lager for sponsoring the prize.

  • Kanko probably had one of the best games of his life and must be very unlucky not to take the no 8 spot.

The voting was close between Kanko and Vermeulen.

I think it might be the fact that more Province supporters submit Team of the Week.

  • I have the stats in front of me and there is just no way that Vermeulen’s performance against a weaker opposition should have won him a spot in the team of the week 15 this week.

    Let’s compare shall we:

D made 13 tackles and 4 Assists with no misses
K made 7 tackles and 1 Assist with no misses

    D forced no turn overs
    K forced 1 turn over

D 14 Ball Carries 112m gained 62% over gain line
K 10 Ball Carries 113m gained 100% over gain line

    D 0 linebreaks 1 offload 4 passes 0 playmaker passes
    K 0 Linebreaks 0 offload 11 passes 1 playmaker pass

    D 19 times at breakdown 12 attack 7 defense
    K 32 times at breakdown 28 attack 3 defense

    D 1 unforced error
    K 1 unforced error

Duanne made more tackles, but that’s all, in every other area, Kanko out played him against a tougher opposition. I think the WP guys should rethink their selection.

  • I’ll put my 2 cents in and the only selection I disagree with is the #8 spot ..not because of any stats but I feel Kankos form had the biggest influenze in either games ..in fact he was immense , Duane sure was good but its difficult to gauge when he was in a team kicking arse.

  • Also, I reckon Kanko made 90% of those ruck attends in the last 15min. Our forwards dominated enough so that Duane could run the ball more, 40% more than Kanko. Yet he only won the more tackle statistic? Cause he didn’t make as much ground? Is that because the Cheetah’s were better on defence than the Bulls. We can look at these stats any which way we want.

If we look at statistics Anton van Zyl had the #5 slot sewn up. Don’t see his name mentioned too often.

  • I wonder if there is such a thing as too much depth. This is what I think. Because here we are with a pick of 39 boks, some suspiciously left out, and a few more overseas (Steyn, Botha, Piennar), all hopefuls for an end of year squad of what I presume will be, 28.

the reason why Nonu and Smith are so damn good is because they’ve been given time to not only prove that they are good, but become good. Why? Because there weren’t too many others lurking around with their hands up for the number 12 and 13 jerseys.

I honestly am starting to wonder, is too much depth causing us to rotate players in and out of the top 28 with too much ease? I wonder, are we saturating the positions? How many boks have we had in the past two years? I’d love it if we picked 30 players and stuck to it for a year or two.

  • Lineout stats from both games (its not player specific):
Sharks: 11 lineouts, win percentage: 72.73%
Bulls: 14 lineouts, win percentage 85.71%

WP: 6 lineouts, win percentage 66.67%
    Cheetahs: 25 lineouts, 80.00%

WP were rubbish at lineout time, I blame Fourie for that though, he’s lineout throwing is very average. What he does around the field though.

And for the record, I did state earlier on this thread the I feel WP dominated the Cheetahs, much the same as the Sharks dominated the Bulls. The two games were just different that we played in the rain and failed to score the tries.

You guys got the tries, and if the Final goes the same way and the Sharks cannot convert possession into tries, I reckon the Currie Cup is going to Cape Town.

Seriously, I wouldn’t have squabbled if Kanko got the 8th man slot.

Then again, Strauss might be required to stop the likes of JdV and de Jongh with his defensive capabilities..

    Interesting balance requires there..

I actually voted for Hargreaves!!

Molly makes a valid point though. The Sharks supporters are using stats to suit their agenda (Kanko vs Duane) and yet the stats proves that Van Zyl should have been selected ahead of Hargreaves!!

I love the stats, but when you think about it, you make whatever you want with the stats, I can make a stat either a good or a bad thing, depending on how I feel that day or about that player..

I think you know that I have consistently said that this is a class WP team, not to be taken lightly. I still believe that, and hope we can take it in the Final.

  • its easy to get decent stats when your playing poor opposition and there is little or no pressure on you. no one in there right mind can compare the bulls to the cheetahs at the end of this years cc. cheetahs coming into the semis had been made to look good by the poor leopards and pumas, and struggled past the lions in bloem. congratlations wp for hammering a team with no halfbacks, centre playing wing and a flank playing lock. i dont even want to think about what that backline will be like without bosman  crazy ramble
