Lions, Cheetahs do a shady deal over Mapoe

A report on OFM earlier today indicates that the Lions have signed Lionel Mapoe. This was hinted at a few weeks ago, but given that Mapoe is still going to court to try and get out of his Cheetahs contract to join the Sharks, we dismissed it as nothing but mischief.

We really don’t know anything about this latest development yet – as Mapoe’s agent is not currently answering his phone. Rumours would indicate that the Lions have agreed a transfer fee with Harold Verster, though – the same bloke who placed a ridiculous valuation on the player of about 100 times his current salary in order to prevent him joining the Sharks.

We’ll bring you more on this as we get it. The Lions look set to announce the signing at a press conference this afternoon.

  •   Steady on, steady on.

Nameless, baseless article. Just because it is on news 24 doesn’t make it true, they also said John had signed with the Lions.

What makes the Lions any different from the Sharks? The court order says he has to play for the cheethas, it doesn’t say he must not play for the sharks.

  • IF very big IF he has signed with the Lions and somehow verster has been himself with POKKEL brains and said “I will give him a release, but NOT if it is to go to the Sharks” Then I don’t blame the guy, why should he sit on the sidelines for a year if he can play and probably go to the RWC?

    Stefan`s best position is 15 not 13.
We need some cover there. If Plum didn`t want to risk Lindique ( spelling? ) in the CC, he won`t risk him in the super 15, which means we lose our best fullback again.

And why would you want to play a NZ’er ahead of JPP, Mvovo or Odwa anyway?

The Sharks not only have a signed contract with mapoe, but they paid him salaries and medical costs etc.

And like KSA said , rumours dont mean it’s fact, According to rumours , Smitty,JPP,Kanko were signed by the Lions and we all know the history to those.

  • guys i have to say that this whole affair makes me upset, not with Harold Verster or Mapoe, but the sharks and Strauli. I’m actually glad in a way because the current business tactics of the sharks has left a lot to be desired (ie: Alberts and Ludik). Hopefully now the sharks will wake up and stop these shaddy deals of trying to get something for nothing. If we had gone about this the propper way, Verster would probably have taken the transfer fee. Hopefully this is a wake up call for van Zyl and Stauli.

  • Let the guy go. He needs to play rugby, not sit on the sidelines or in court.
Everybody nneds to chill and not be upset with Lionel. We bought some Lions players (Ludik, Big Vic, Jean D, Rory R) and look at how they are performing. We also had a few guys from the Free-State over the years and more recently Meyer B. I am 100% sure if Meyer B playes for the Sharks in 2011 we’ll see him in the green and gold again.

This is nothing more than a childish conspiracy between two very jealous inferior rugby unions……

OHH, and we won the CC2010. So that makes us the CC champions if im not mistaking….

SO good for you Lionel. May you get back on to the pitch asap.

  • I’m hurting but before we get upset, lets ensure that our frustration is directed at the right person, Herold Verster. Looks like Verster was more than willing to accept a transfer fee from the Lions which is less than what we offered him. If this is true, let’s hope that it’s only until the end of the CC next year. If not, it’s still fine.
FS started this war, best believe we will finish it!!!!!!
Best of luck to Mapoe, we wish you the very best in your career, you know we want you to be a Shark but we can’t blame you for wanting to play the game you love. We understand that Verster forced your hand.

We all know that Oupa is going to occupy the 13 jersey and Bosman will probably get a run in the 12 jersey and then there is Adi but there is no reason why Lindeque can’t start off in the VC cup and get introduced off the bench in the “easier” games.

The sharks wanted Mapoe. They wanted him for free, and the poor salary and treatment was a smoke screen. Only when an arbitrator and the court said you couldn’t have him for free, did you make an offer. It may well be petty from verster to refuse the offer, and give the sharks the finger, knowing that mapoe would never perform to the best of his ability in a cheetahs jersey, so why not accept an offer from the Lions? • @Greg (Comment 56) : I hate to correct you on open forum but you “facts” are junk
Mapoe approached the Sharks saying that his contract was over with the Cheetahs and he signed a valid contract with the Sharks
After the court case the Sharks offered the Cheetahs a fair and reasonable transfer fee which was rejected out of hand by FS Cheetahs would not even release Mapoe to play 7′s
Sharks supported Mapoe’s appeal which he subsequently lost on a technicality and there is a further case pending-funded by Sharks
As far as i am aware if the Lions have signed Mapoe they are open to a further law suite from the Sharks and FS are also open to the same suite for at least Mapoe’s salary legal costs and medical bills
Whilst I feel for Mapoe it is time that both the player association and S A Rugby got in and sorted this out. Free State are not the powerful union they once were
As far as you comment”Only when an arbitrator and the court said you couldn’t have him for free, did you make an offer” please check your source This is rubbish of the highest order and this is how rumours start

Calm down guys: signing Lionel was a mistake of note to begin with, when you look at the youngsters being ignored at the academy.

Hopeffully it means that Ojiambo and Sithole get contracts: much more power and pace in those 2.

The Lions remain a rehab centre for floundering careers – not gonna change any time soon, despite the bluster from the concrete shit-hole.

All we need now is to develop Piet lindeque and some of our other young centres so that Vulindlu can be our 4th wing, because we all know u need at least 4 good wingers to even think of saying that we have depth…to my mind at least. Still hope somehow Mapoe ends up playing for us. Will be an awesome replacement 4 odwa when he calls it a day. At least Odwa is playing some of the best rugby i have seen him play.

  • @Fattmann (Comment 64) : So the sharks contracted him on the basis that he told them his contract with freestate was over? They didn’t check this? They just put a new contract in front of him and said “ok, sign this and go start training”? That was fairly short sighted of them? Had they checked then, discovered that the real reason he was on their doorstep was because he was unhappy, and wanted more money, they should have then approached freestate and asked if they could buy him. Instead, they helped him try and find a loophole in his contract, and hoped they would be able to recoup those costs from freestate. Why did they go the contract loophole route before making an offer, or is that also a rumour?

I doubt the Lions are open to a lawsuit from the sharks, they never had a valid contract with mapoe, they couldn’t have, because his contract with freestate was valid(as determined by a court of law) and predated the sharks contract. As for a suit against the cheetahs for their expenses, I also doubt that, they should not have been paying that in the first place.

Yes, I am telling you it is different, and I believe it is. The sharks first went the ‘find a contract loophole’ route, and then the ‘lets make an offer’ route. If this story (mapoe going to Lions) is true, it appears that they (the Lions) went the ‘make an offer’ route first. Am I wrong on that?

  • @Greg (Comment 76) : 9/3/2010 Mapoe on the advice on Jan Harm Van Wyk joins Sharks after he terminates his agreement/contract with Cheetahs on the grounds of non payment and misrepresentation Sharks sign Mapoe after consultation with legal experts who all concur that the contract is no longer valid It is interesting to note that in neither court cases have the FS defended these claims but rather opted to go for the Junior contract as still being enforceable When Mapoe played S14 he received a salary of R23,000 month the minimum salary of a S14 Player He was injured in the tournament His Salary with the FS was a junior U21 contract salary of R2000 a month FS taking advantage of a junior player Mapoe cited problems with his salary as the reason for wanting to quit Bloemfontein, with his agent Jan-Harm van Wyk seeking a release certificate from the Cheetahs in order to pave the way for a lucrative move to Durban FS upped his salary to R5000
However Mapoe already joined the Sharks at the beginning of the Currie Cup, but is not allowed to be selected by coach John Plumtree as Free State claim that he still has a valid contract with them.

Free State therefore did not want to issue a clearance certificate for Mapoe to be able to play following minor shoulder surgery and the subsequent rehabilitation paid for by the Sharks who also undertook to pay Mapoe’s salary
Mapoe and The Sharks are continuing their case and have appealed the Free State High Court’s order for the sought after winger to return to the Free State Cheetahs. In the application by Mapoe and the Sharks Company, it is said that judge Corné van Zyl had erred in the application of a number of legal principles. It is said that she understood, interpreted and applied the legal principles incorrectly and the case should have been heard on the basis of misrepresentation and failure to pay Mapoe on time
The argument of no play no pay cannot apply here as no warning letter were issued
The High Court is in recess until 11 October, when a date for the hearing will be decided.
As far as I have been able to find out today this is still the case. I know Kevin De Klerk is an honourable man and if a deal has been struck than I would expect him to meet the Sharks expenses However I do not think that this deal is on the cards

  • Jippy!!!! Ojiambo on black and white…good stuff. Great man for future…at blindside flank mostly is my guess. If Mapoe doesn’t play for us i still think we might need to buy another young 13 or maybe steal Mjekevu from the lions… We need to have at least 4 superrugby quality wingers. Stef and Ludik can’t play the role the way we would like it to be played. Ludik is a bladdy good Fullback finsh en Klaar.

  • We need number 13′s!!!! Adi bladdy good, but age 30 now only about 2 or so left. Stef…not really a 13 anyway and we know how old he is. Vulindlu…more of a wing 4 sure…distribution skills are not the best. Like Vulindlu on the wing. Lindeque still needs another 2 years of experience and conditioning before he is ready for Superrugby in my mind.

Add to that Deon v Rensburg. That is 6 wings. Guess, Boshoff and Killian will slot into 15 as well with Taute. Deon, Lionel and Waylon at 13. Rest wings. Fair depth out wide, no real game breakers at scrum time. Although they have a few good loosies in v Deventer and Minnie.

  • @ruggabugga (Comment 232) :I am not disagreeing, I have been a lions fan since 1972, when Gerald Bosch was my hero, I have lived through some tough times, as well as some good times. Some teams have them more that others, look at what happened to the Bulls when they had the lean years, Loftus was half empty which is better than Ellispark which was almost empty, fickle people in JHB, they all support WP or the Sharks, until the Lions begin to win, then they join the Lions again.

  • @Whindy (Comment 228) : the 2010 s14 in review : after 5 losses in a row (with at least 2 with the help of some dubious refereeing decisions),the sharks managed to close rank, and fight back to record 7wins from their last 8 games ,a narrow loss to the bulls at loftus being their only defeat in a great turn-around from the east coast rugby team ..

There are those lurking here in Joburg ..I put it down to some great marketing by the Sharks and ofcourse the success that they and the Bulls have enjoyed.

Hell some that I have met over the years have never even been to Durban ..

  • @CoffeeShopBok;-) (Comment 242) : just wish that pdivvy and selectors come out and say that performances against other sa teams (in s15)will NOT be brought into consideration when selecting any bok team.. only based on performances versus aus and kiwi`s ..because ultimately, the world cup will be won playing against the kiwi`s,aussies, etc ..not the boks versus the boks ..
