Sonny Bill Williams will make his much anticipated International Rugby Debut for the All Blacks on Saturday at Twickenham. While many a commentator thought that the All Black selectors would take the easy option and bring Sonny Bill into the international fold next weekend against Scotland, they have thrown caution to the wind and sent the 25 year old, 6 ft 4’,108 kg wrecking ball of athleticism into a rugby cauldron – out of position at outside centre.

Sonny Bill Williams who has played only a handful of matches in New Zealand at inside centre has been seen as a special talent by the NZRFU and has been fast tracked into the All Black set up. It has taken many back at his selection at centre ahead of the reliable Conrad Smith who has made the position his own in recent seasons.

The All Black brains trust must expect the English brigade to play a defensive type of game (it doesn’t actually take that much of a brains trust to work that out) and attempt to wind the clock down from the opening minute, in the vain hope that they may still be the mix come the 60th minute mark. Sonny Bill Williams selection along with Nonu (102 kg), Hosea Gear (100 kg), and Joe Rocokoko (102 kg) makes for a formidably large backline that will not lack attacking intent in breaking down Mike Ford’s defence orientated approach.

In other changes to the side that was beaten after the hooter by the Australians in Hong Kong include Hosea Gear in for the injured Corey Jane, Sam Whitelock in for the grubber kicking Otago lock Tom Donnelley and Alby Mathewson in for the established Jimmy Cowan. There is also a real reshuffle on the bench with Ben Franks, Liam Messam, Anthony Boric and Andy Ellis all coming into the match day 22, and all look certain to get game time.

The All Black selectors continue to spread the net and the player base seems to constantly look refreshed and stronger for their efforts.

The rugby trophy honouring the late New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary – The Hillary Shield will again be on the line, it was first contested in the 2008 Test against England at Twickenham. It honours Sir Edmund’s lifetime of achievements as a mountaineer, adventurer, humanitarian and as Knight of the Garter. A legendary figure in New Zealand, Sir Edmund was also widely respected in the UK and around the world as the climber who, with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, made the first successful ascent of Mt Everest in 1953 as part of a British climbing expedition.

The All Blacks have played England 33 times since 1905 with 26 wins to New Zealand, 6 to England and 1 draw. The last Test against England was at Twickenham on last year’s end of year tour, which the All Blacks won 19 – 6.

When looking at the number of Test caps in brackets it makes for some fascinating analysis of youth and experience.

Good luck for Saturday SBW and congratulations.

  • Great banter….I love it !

Having watched SBW way back when he was just a boy not cooperating at the Canterbury Bulldogs, two things hit me !

    1. He is a strong young man able to foot it with the biggest guys on the park…forwards or backs.

    and

    2. His ability to off load and keep the ball alive.

Obviously from Saturday in his first Test….things can only improve for him.

But watch out for the off loading and the keeping the ball alive part of his game (it is outstanding he is really hard to contain), I personally think it fits perfectly into the AB style of play, especially against the Northern Hemisphere sides.

He will obviously be raw…but I take my hat of to the lad for chasing the AB dream and a RWC spot…..

….. more than i can say for the best player in the world Carl Hayman. Who won’t be seen on the international stage again….go Owen Franks.

So let’s not be too critical of the young chap just yet, I think he could expose a few light weights one on one out there pretending to be international backs.

Imagine a Test Match inside centre match up of Lambie v SBW and Freuan v Jacobs ….hopefully that day arrives soon ! lol
