de Villiers training

Jean de Villiers should be fit enough to train with his Springboks team-mates on Tuesday said team doctor Craig Roberts after De Villiers missed Monday’s session because of a groin injury.

De Villiers sat out the field session after feeling tightness in the area during Saturday’s 23-21 victory over Ireland.

“It is an acute muscle strain – not a tear – and it’s just a bit sore,” said Roberts. “We have to be clever in how we manage him and he should be fine to train tomorrow [Tuesday].”

Meanwhile looseforward Willem Alberts resumed running on Monday after missing the first week of training with a calf muscle problem sustained in the Absa Currie Cup final.

“It is a minor calf strain and he did some running today and I am really pleased with him,” said Dr Roberts. “We’ll continue to monitor him in the hope that he will be fit to play on Saturday if selected.”
Alberts was named in the squad for Saturday’s Test against Ireland but did not recover sufficiently in time to take his place.

Assistant coach Dick Muir meanwhile welcomed the arrival of Frans Steyn into the squad. Steyn joined the group from Paris on Sunday and immediately slotted in to Monday’s session.

“We miss him when he is not with us,” said Muir. “He covers a number of positions and gives us lots of options in selection, especially with so many centres currently unavailable through injury.

“He can play 10, 12 or 15 and like Jean de Villiers is pretty flexible. I could see them playing together in the centres but we’ll have to weigh up all our options in selection.”

The Springbok team will be named on Tuesday at 12h30 (14h30 SA time).

  • Good news this.. I’m hoping for a Frans Steyn at 12, with JDV at 13 for the Welsh test.

Lets just hope it doesn’t become the Walsh test ;-)

  • Reckon we keep the centre combo as is and frans @fb..gio to replace either of bjorn of habana ..dropped wing to fall out of match 22,because wanna see mvovo have a run..wont change the pack either..tough call: do you drop keegan from match 22 and put alberts on bench then? Or drop stegmann and play alberts/smith/spies ?

  • My crazy thought for the day, put Spies at 13 and give the #8 to Kanko. And this has absolutely nothing to do with me being a Sharks fan whatsoever.

Ok. That’ll never happen. But I do believe we have options at 13 if we stop getting so precious over our wings. I’d rather see Fransie at fullback myself. I’d put Aplon and Mvovo on the wings, and at 94kilos, I’d look at moving Habs to 13 for a game. We still have other options at 13 if that fails early on with the likes of AD, Basson, Hougard, Lambie and Kirchner… and if the going really really gets tough, did I mention, Spies.

  • I would like to see: 9)Pienaar 10)M Steyn 11)Habana 12)JDV 13)Hougaard 14)Mvovo 15)F Steyn

I know its a team everyone would like but I cant help but think that Hougaard would be great at 13 his D is good and he is awesome with ball in hand. If not I would prefer Hougaard over Pienaar. He is too good to be left out of this team. Frans need to be as far away from 10 and 12 as possible. I dont like his decision making skills!

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 4) : Think I would stick with Aplon at 15 actually.. Depends a lot of roof open or closed.

What about Ruan? Mike Phillips is very physical at scrummie, maybe Hougie would be a good bet against him? That said Ruan had a cracker. A nice headache!

  • @Sportbilly (Comment 13) :

Aplon injects that bit of pace on the counter attack..

Ruan is a big bloke, and will look to build on his form. Surely this is his only chance to stake a claim on the backup number 9 jersey for the World Cup. I hear you that Hougie is good and in form, and it would be nice to give the guy a run, but we want to win the Slam, not just experiment and see what we have.

Interesting headache as you have pointed out.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 14) : Ja, I think I would stick with Ruan.. Sends the player a good message after his performance.

Hougie needs 20 minutes at least though. Would love to see him get in Phillips face. Can’t stand that guy. I hope he gets Albertsed.

  • I heard that Adi might miss out entirely!! :???:

Frans can cover 12, 13 and 15 and if he starts in the centers then it would make sense to have Kirchner on the bench to cover 13 and 15.

Don’t think it will happen though. Should see him off the bench in place of Keegs I reckon.

Ozbok – dont you think the “conditions” are entirely different? Having Ruan play in similar conditions is a huge asset..they play two different games. Just like these conditions might suite say Danie Rossouw better than the Tri-nations perhaps?
