We’re please to report that we’ve had confirmation about a number of promising Under 21 players that will continue their careers with the Sharks next year.

While there has been no official word from the Sharks union about which players on the fringes of the main squad will be contracted for next year, we’re using our own network of contacts to build up a picture of who we’ll have available in 2011. This is by no means complete, but the names here are the ones we have confirmed and we will continue to dig until we have clarity on all of the guys who were in the system this year.

Of the players in the 2010 Sharks Under 21 squad, the following will definitely be playing in Sharks colours next year:
Kyle Cooper (Hooker)
Dale Chadwick (Prop)
Ross Cronje (Scrumhlaf)
Guy Cronje (Flyhalf)
Willie du Plessis (Flyhalf)
Lambert Groenewald (Flanker)
Dwayne Jenner (Centre)
Piet Lindeque (Centre)
Jandre Marais (Lock)
Peet Marais (Lock)
Howard Mnisi (Centre)
Tera Mtembu (Loose Forward)
Daniel Ojiambo (Lock/Loose Forward/Centre/Wing)
Kene Okafor (Lock/Flank)
Wynand Pienaar (Utility Back)
Julian Redelinghuys (Prop)
Cobus Reinach (Scrumhalf)
Sibusiso Sithole (Wing)
Adriaan Theisinger (Loose Forward)

A number of Under 21 players have, unfortunately, not been offered contracts for next year. The ones we know about are:
Hannes Snyman (Hooker)
Meyer Swanepoel (Loose Forward)
Jaco Otto (Flanker)

We’ll keep you posted as we are able to add more names to either list.

  • Jaco Otto looked to me like a Keegan replica the couple of times I have seen him play. He might even be smaller though.

With the number of loosies around though, you can’t keep em all.

Louis Schreuder, Ruaan Smith, JP Smith, Lehmann to name a few.

  • RE: LOOSEFORWARDS
Throughout this campaign the u21 Swys and Rudolph really seemed to struggle to decide on their best l/fwd trio and often juggled the players around. I had the feeling that our selectors weren’t completely happy with what they had esp when you compare our loosies to the likes of CJ Stander, Marnus Schoeman, Nick Koster, Yaya, Jaco Kriel, Renaldo B and Boom Prinsloo from our opponents and think of the depth we’ll have when Deysel returns to the senior side. So for me, to see Meyer, Jaco and Cameron left out in the cold does come as that much of a surprise. I suspect that Theisinger of whom much is expected will suffer the same fate if he doesn’t show a great deal of improvement next year. For me Mthembu is really the l/f player to get excited about next u21 season. He oozes potential and IMO if he can up his defensive game he’ll go far in pro rugby. Lambert G whose u21 days are now over is possibly the biggest surprise re-signing. Nevertheless we came within a whisker of making the home u21 final, so all the guys that didn’t get contracts deserve a lot of praise and I wish them all the very best for the future.
I too would like to hear a progress report on Wynand Pienaar. He’s in a tough spot right now but I hope his quality earns him a good contract down the line.

  • @PaarlBok (Comment 24) : Only joking about Gimmies. Excellent rugby school. I imagine the WP junior scouts all fat lazy guys who live in the Northern Suburbs and get 90% of their work done by just watching 3 schools from that Paarl-S/bosch. I’ve heard good things about Chris Bosch from a reliable source so can’t wait to see him in action next yr. Unfortunately don’t have a Sharks u19 list. Have emailed Academy for one a couple of times w/o success. I’m sure Robdylan would be beable to get a full list tho. What about it Rob?

  • @beet (Comment 25) : They are mostly Paul Roos bound, Bekker (snr) and Hanekom and Snyman coach there.

The reason why I think they’ll go the Matie Boland route is that I saw Loffie at their matches, also the main speaker at KleinGims rugby big brag, Louis Koen very active in our schoolboy coaching. Saw him many a day on Cheve (KleinGims) sports field coaching our U12/13 place kickers.

SlapTjips also a old Gimmie pretty much involved in this area and pretty sure he’ll make sure the Brutes get the top talent from here.

Hilton is a bit small, recently moved from 10 to 9, due to his size…he needs to work on his passing and scrummie kicks. Got some good flair though. Siya…to small…he is like my size and play Centre/Wing. Not a natural talent to be honest. Just started playing provincial rugby from a young age.

Weight is an issue… when he was injured, it ballooned to a staggering 145kg, but he’s slimmed down now to closer to 120-125. Whatever the case, he’s a flipping HUGE piece of meat. He’s been playing club rugby, although I’m not sure for who.

He have provincial colours in 5 different sports (rugby, cricket, pluimbal, hockey and athletics) as a U13 prymary school kid. Mind you at KleinGim you get them often in few different sports. We have three kids now in that agegroup that plays rugby for WP and cricket and hockey for Boland.

If I were Rassie, I would take a serious look at our guy Kyle Cooper. I’m sure that by this time next yr we’ll be in agreement that he’s better than Deon Fourie.

If we still had Bothma and Whiteley we might have been celebrating another title. Good thing we still have the Vodacom Cup for these guys. SA rugby really needs to come up with a plan for 22-25yr olds in the second half of the yr. As the Varsity Cup gains momentum, it’s bound to spell trouble for us in KZN. Lots of guys are being noticed thru it and seeing it as an opportunity to promote themselves.

  • @PaarlBok (Comment 68) : Based on this info I can only conclude that Sadie and Hanekom make much better decisions on the field than off it. Jokes.
There’s bound to be a good battle for WP centre positions in the years.
If you had to compare Sadie to Marius Joubert at the same age, who do you think would come out on top?

  • @beet (Comment 69) : I’ll always rate Jouba above them. He had to go the long hard route to the Bok jersey. Havent played WP Craven Week and had to played for Boland as junior. Remember him and Juries had that deadly combo those years for Boland under Mallet. Same with Dewaldt Duvenhage, Boland gave them the oppertunity to get their careers going.

The likes of Sadie, Schalkie and Jean got shaort route via WP.

Talented wise I think Sadie is a much better attacker, Jouba on defense at this stage. Sadie have this unique way of slipping through the tiniest of gaps because of his speed. Probably more suited for 12 then 13.

  • HANNES SNYMAN DEFINATELY deserved a contract for 2011… He is such a promising player! He’ll prove it though im sure – just wait and see! :)

  • @s.h.a.r.k.s (Comment 71) : Hannes is a good player, but there is such a long line of hookers at the Sharks it will be better for him to go develop somewhere else.
