Powerful winger Lionel Mapoe has been included in the Springbok Sevens training squad who get together this morning in Cape Town in preparation for the first two 2010/11 HSBC Sevens World Series tournaments in Dubai and George.

Mapoe made his last appearance for the Springbok Sevens at the IRB Sevens World Cup in Dubai last year and then set the local scene alight with performances for the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs in the 2009 Absa Currie Cup competition.

Unfortunately, an ankle injury towards the end of last season, coupled with a contractual dispute, kept him out of action during much of the current season. Mapoe is now back to full fitness again and his contractual issues resolved after he recently signed for the Golden Lions Rugby Union.

Springbok Sevens coach Paul Treu returned to South Africa earlier today with his SA Viper squad, who lost in extra-time to the Penguins from New Zealand at the Singapore Cricket Club over the weekend, where the Vipers had won the tournament on three previous occasions. Mark Richards, the Sharks U21 winger, also played in the tournament, and has impressed the coach enough to get a call up to the training squad.

Treu used the opportunity with the Vipers to give valuable playing time to Kyle Brown, Frankie Horne and Branco du Preez, who have all been sidelined for long periods of time because of injury.

“I am very happy that Lionel is able to join us. He has is quite eager to return to action and he is a great addition to the squad,” said Treu, who explained that Mapoe will be available for the Dubai and George tournaments only.

Another familiar face in the training squad is winger Howard Noble, who had a good season with the SWD Eagles in the Absa Currie Cup First Division.

The squad will report for duty at 10am on Wednesday at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa in Newlands for their customary medical and fitness check-up before returning to Stellenbosch to start with their on-field training.

The Springbok Sevens training squad is:
Forwards: Chase Minnaar, Kyle Brown, Chris Dry, Neil Powell, Boom Prinsloo (SARU contracted), Lubabalo Mtembu (The Sharks), Jacques Engelbrecht (SWD Eagles), Richard Prinsloo (Platinum Leopards), Shane Spring (Border Bulldogs);

Backs: Paul Delport, Cecil Afrika, Branco du Preez, Steven Hunt, Renfred Dazel (SARU contracted), Bernardo Botha (Xerox Lions), Sibusiso Sithole (The Sharks), Hoffman Maritz (Xerox Lions), Logan Basson (Border Bulldogs), Lionel Mapoe (Xerox Lions), Mark Richards (The Sharks), Howard Noble (SWD Eagles), Pieter Engelbrecht (Xerox Lions), AJ Coertzen (Vodacom FS Cheetahs).

  • hello all..some info for you all

    Mealamu banned – All Blacks hooker Keven Mealamu has received a four-week suspension for headbutting Lewis Moody at Twickenham last Saturday, which is a slap on the wrist considering Bok lock Bakkies Botha was banned for nine weeks after headbutting Jimmy Cowan in the Tri-Nations.

    The judicial officer determined it was an intentional act of foul play, and a mid-range entry point in the IRB list of sanctions of eight weeks. But in the absence of aggravating factors, together with compelling mitigating factors including the player’s conduct at the hearing and his exemplary disciplinary record, reduced the suspension to four.

    However, the All Blacks management is set to appeal the verdict. ‘Obviously we are disappointed,’ said forwards coach Steve Hansen. ‘There is not a lot we can say. We have 48 hours to appeal it and there is a good likelihood that is what we are going to do. At this point that is all we can say.’

  • Good training squad…here is my final 12 for the two opening tournanments

    Kyle Brown(c),Boom prinsloo,Lubabalo Mtembu, Jacques Engelbrecht and Chase Minnaar.(Would choose Frankie Horn if he was in the squad)

    Paul Delport, Cecil Afrika,Branco du preez, Renfred Dazel, Bernado Botha, Sibusiso Sithole and Lionel Mapoe. Have not seen Richards play sevens at this level yet…most likely very good though.

  • Where is Frankie horn and Ryno Benjamin by the way? Think Lionel would be way better than benjamin at centre, but ryno still one of our better players. Frankie not running fit yet?
