Basson out, opens door for Mvovo?

Wing Bjorn Basson has been forced out of the Springbok tour of the UK and Ireland because of injury. The Vodacom Blue Bulls player sustained a grade 2 right ankle sprain in Saturday’s 29-25 win over Wales at the Millennium Stadium. A decision on whether to call for a replacement will be taken in due course.

Meanwhile coach Peter de Villiers hailed the character of his team as they withstood a fierce, late Welsh onslaught to record a second successive tour victory, following the 23-21 win over Ireland eight days ago. “The defensive effort demonstrated the character of this team,” said de Villiers. “I was very happy with the spirit we showed but we know there’s a lot of work still to be done in terms of performance.

“Our first-half play left a lot to be desired but we spoke about it at half time and tightened up in the second half and produced the rugby this team is capable of to take the lead. “We’ve had two hard fought victories but we have yet to produce an entirely satisfactory performance so there’s plenty for us to work on this week.

“It has been three weeks of hard work for the players and physically they have stood up well to the challenge and we can expect more of the same from Scotland. “The last time we were in Edinburgh there were only four points in the game (South Africa won 14-10) and we lost here in 2002 and we’ll keep that at the front of our minds rather than anything else this week.”

No Jannie in there? Giving him a break or dropping him?

One has to feel for Hargreaves on this tour, was never going to get any game time!

  • Resting him. If we can’t stuff the Scots without Jannie, we are a lots worse than I thought. Ditto Bakkies

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 1) : Play Mvovo at 11 and Aplon at 14. The rest of your backline are fine, but how is Adi? He has hardly played much this year. How fit is he? I know he played a bit last week but don’t think he is game fit. Still think he is our best 13 over there if he is game fit though.

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : Rob, I know Vic is the captain but feel he needs a rest. We need him for the England game. What about Hargreaves getting some game time? Or even coming off the bench. Juan can Captain this week. Matfield has played almost every game this year. He has to be rested for the England game. They played superb yesterday. Don’t want to lose to them.

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : I see you have Hargreaves on the bench. Sorry.

I would like him to start. Victor needs a total rest I think. Maybe keep him on the bench if things go a bit wrong. After watching the AB’s totally out play Scotland don’t think we need to risk our captain this week also some others can rest and be fresh for the England game.

  • Ok, but then we must start with Bakkies. Actually, that makes some good sense. He’s more in need of gametime anyway. But I don’t want Smith to start cos I want to see the Sharks loose trio play as a combo

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 1) :
Awesome team, except for the Habana question.

On form, he is probably the best wing in the world. Right now his head is in the wrong place, and he is rushing his play.

I think it is a given that he will start in the WC, so we must bite the bullet and play him throughout this tour, in the hope that he finds his feet. Use the other wing to test for options- I feel for Basson, but I believe that he offers similar ability to Aplon, while Mvovo offers a physical presence that neither does – he should have got more game time already, and may be a better bet for the WC than Basson anyway.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 10) : Personally I think Habs head is on the record. He reminds me of Ian Wright who when he level with the English goal record he kept missing the goal It went on for weeks with the press on his back fans on his back, That’s where Habana is now trying to break the record instead of playing his normal game and the record will come he sees every chance as the one to break the Boks record That’s why we butchered at least 2 tries yesterday
I think what must happen is that whoever goes over the line calls Habana and gives him the ball to score the try. Maybe not he will drop that ball as well!!!!!

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : I think with the selection of the side what needs to be settled is who will captain ite and once that is done pick the team.
To play Scotland I would choose
    15 Crusty
    14 Aplon
    13 Adi
    12 Frans
    11 Mvovo
    10 Lambie
    09 Hougie
    08 Kanko
    07 Vic
    06 Keegan
    05 Hargs
    04 Flip
    03 CJ
    02 Chili-Capt
    01 Oosthuizen
    16 Strauss
    17 Jannie
    18 Bakkies
    19 Juan
    20 Ruan
    21 JDV
    22 Jantjies

  • I dont think PdV will do hectic changes for the Scotts game. He will keep Habana there and will shift Aplon to wing and Krusty at 15. Mvovo will be on the bench at most. I’m saying it with a PdV set of glasses (moustache?)

I definitely think that is part of it – he was so jumpy with any attacking opportunity.

I really feel sorry for him – he was a hero for so long, and people are now treating him with utter disdain; it must be humiliating and hurtful.

I agree that he has been terrible and must take a long, hard look at himself, but I believe in loyalty – and he deserves better than the booing and name-calling.

I am not sure that dropping him will do him any good – maybe the coaches need to make a call, tell him he has this tour to find himself, and even call him a therapist if necessary.

  • Victor will remain captain. The rest will at MOST only be swops with the current bench. Flip MIGHT get game ahead of Bakkies, Alberts MIGHT be in Stegman’s place (yes, no “fetcher”), Hougaard MIGHT be in Ruan’s place, etc.

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : I would go with a pack similar … Wld just play Bakkies as he needs the game time.

Tempted to play Spies to try and get him in even better form but Kanko deserves a run I guess.

  • Personally I dont think we should change things just for the sake of change. If this tour was about testing our depth we have already gone about it the wrong way.
The injury to Basson means Mvovo is the natural replacement.
Leave the centre combo in place as it gives them another week to gel before they play England.
I agree that Alberts should start as Stegman has been nowhere and Keegan/Kanko should get the bench spot.
Its hard for Hargreaves but Matfield has to play for the sake on consistency.
We havnt been putting teams away so let these guys keep playing together and see what they can produce. This is the Boks after all not a primary school team where everybody gets a chance.
Take a leaf out the All Blacks books and only chnage where it is absolutely necessary.
