South Africa managed to beat a very competitive Welsh team on Saturday, but how well do we rate each o the individual players?

Gio Aplon
Had another solid game at the back, and should be the fullback for the next two games. Was magnificent on defence – 8/10

Bjorn Basson
He must be the best player in the air for the Boks, and has shown time and again that he can chase. Its just a concern that he doesn’t look for more work – 6/10

Frans Steyn
First game back for the Springboks on this tour, and it was not his best either. Steyn was eager to impress but did not bring anything to the game that Kirchner couldn’t. – 5/10

Jean de Villiers
Jean tried everything on attack and carried the ball well, and was strong on defence. A solid yet average game by his standards– 6/10

Bryan Habana
He has gone backwards from his game against Ireland, and his tendency to push up on defence puts the Boks at risk more often than not. Not a very good game at all – 4/10

Morne Steyn
It’s not often that Steyn misses easy kicks, but its two in two games now. One gets the feeling that he is a bit tired after a very long season. The Boks could have had a few more tries had he given the ball some air. – 6/10

Ruan Pienaar
He was shown up by the far superior decision making skills of his opposite number. His waving arms and constant talking to ref let him down in this match. – 5/10

Pierre Spies
Continued in his comeback to form with another solid game. He is hungry for the ball and is getting involved both on attack and on defence. – 7/10

Juan Smith
This man loves running with the ball, and had a very solid game. He was a monster on defence and is an asset to this team! He is owning that 7 jersey for the World Cup next year. – 7/10

Deon Stegmann
His second game in the Green and Gold was not as impressive as his first. Will have to wait for the stats to see whether he was not visible due to hard work in the rucking – 6/10

Victor Matfield
This is turning out to be a very good tour for the big man. Scored a try on the day he became the most capped player for the Springboks, and was superb in the lineouts. – 8/10

Bakkies Botha
Good game from Bakkies, he is doing the hard work up front and being a tower of strength in the lineouts. Made a few great, hard tackles! – 7/10

Jannie du Plessis
It was not his best game of the season, but was solid nonetheless. He forms the rock in this strong front row, the best in South Africa for sure! – 6/10

Bismarck du Plessis
A solid game from the big hooker. He was busy as always with ball in hand, but conceded a few penalties. – 6/10

Beast Mtawarira
Another rip roaring performance from the great Beast. He dominated his opposite number in the scrums and proved he is invaluable to this team. Great performance – 8/10

Replacements worth rating:

Willem Alberts
Came on just after half time for Stegmann, and made an immediate impact. He scored a try in his first 5 minutes in a Bok jersey. This big, strong flank will be pushing for a starting jersey – 8/10

Flip van der Merwe
A strong performance replacing Bakkies, doing the hard work in the rucks and in the lineouts. – 6/10

Francois Hougaard
Showed Ruan Pienaar how to pass a ball. Made a massive impact coming and switched on a previously dull backline. – 7/10

Pat Lambie
This kid can tackle hey! His distribution skills simply cannot be ignored, he can spot a good attack from anywhere. A solid second cap! – 6/10

All the other replacements were on for 10 or less minutes.

  • Between Frans and Habana, I’m not sure who was the biggest mampara.

Still believe that we need to back Habana throughout this tour. Fransie needs to choose between France and the Bok jersey – his game has gone backwards (even though he has never looked like a 13).

Nope, I am not judging him specifically as a 13 – he was played out of position.

But he does also look slow and overweight compared to previously.

I think he is very talented, but right now he is off his best. He is NOT a 13 either – Adi should be starting.

  • Good Morning all

I dont agree with many sentiments re F Steyn

Maybe we should be looking at the person without pre-conceived perceptions etc, surely a player should be judged not on if we like him or not? but on his actual play

If he was slow how come he gets has to cover his own tackles plus those he had to make covering for 10 and 12 slipping tackles??

Here is something Jake White had to say…
    How Steyn changed the game
    Mon, 15 Nov 2010 10:22

Turning point: Francois Steyn tackles Shane Williams. (c) Gallo

Wales will have a sick feeling Monday morning, knowing they missed a massive opportunity to beat the Springboks for the second time in their history.

World Cup-winning Springbok coach Jake White, writing for RugbyXV, said they were unlucky not to win.

White felt the turning point came when Frans Steyn tackled Shane Williams out of the game.

“I have no doubt Wales would have won if Williams had stayed on,” White said.

“He would’ve have threatened our already under-pressure defensive line even more, the Boks probably would have had to put two guys on him, and that would have opened up more space for others.

“When Tom Shanklin broke the line and Williams was already off, that’s where Williams would have been at his best, because he would have run off him. That was just one example of where they missed him.

“That’s why Frans Steyn changed the game for the Boks, and it shows why having big centres in defence is such a positive. Some have criticised Steyn for his showing at No.13 and the way the midfield struggled to gel, but they must be fair to the player. He’s played No.12, No.13, wing and No.15 for the Boks, plays mostly inside centre for his club Racing Metro, and we also want him as a No.10.

“People must have some perspective, and all I can say is thank goodness we had Frans on Saturday.”

Not only is Frans not used to playing centeras a combo with JdV but he had to do a lot of covering for missed tackles by some of his fellow boks

I am not saying Frans had a great game but sure things must be looked at in perspective.

  • Also having played the frans out of position there was also the expectation of them rotating positions during the match

That to would cause huge problems

Then another factor to me is the Habana and JdV trying to intercept all the time leaving huge gaps in the defence, this happened on about 5 occasions during the match

I also did not like Habana’s leaving the line all the time. I actually would give him 0 and send home to get some rest and reevaluate.

F Steyn was not bad. The thing is if he tries to be flashy people criticize him for being selfish and if he is not and playing a team game than people think he’s poor because they did not see him.

    @sharks_lover (Comment 22) :
I watched the game, and Frans was stock standard. You do understand that a 12 and 13 have different roles right? Now ask yourself, what did Frans do well as a 13? Compare his game to that of Adi, Conrad Smith or Jacques Fourie.

I already noted that he was played out of position, but to say that he played well is just plain blind.

Last week, Zane made ONE mistake all game and was crucified for it even though he hasnt played centre for a number of years.

Frans made the very same mistake (losing the ball backwards) and missing a tackle or three and not a peep from his groupies on this site.

Let me give you an example. On Rob’s thread “Sharks Juniors Staying at the Tank”, I said that we should not sign any more players (as we have plenty of young talent), and rather save the money to bring Fransie back.

Then yesterday, on the thread “Boks break Welsh hearts – again!”, I wrote the following about Fransie:
“Fransie is not a 13; good 12 though. I dont think its fair to judge him on today’s performance.”

Yet today I am suddenly a Fransie hater and unable to see the truth beyong my bias?

  • My view: Habana was crap… Ruan and JDV were a close second. And Morne is looking VERY tired!

Frans wasn’t a star… but he did tackle Williams out of the game

I reckon this week we should drop/rest Habana, Morne Steyn and Pienaar. Bringing in Mvovo, Lambie and Hougaard defintely won’t weaken the team, so why not try?

I wouldn’t start Alberts this week, but definitely next week against the Poms. He really needs to be a starter, but I propose keeping him back as a “surprise” for the Poms.

There’s no doubt Frans Steyn is not playing like the wunda kid wpw knows he is  , so I think 13 is too much in the frontline for him until he gets match fit again. So I’d put him at 15, Aplon at 14 and bring Adi in to test his match fitness.

I think Steyn’s positional play at Fullback will be better than Aplon’s, so he’ll be able to add some value at 15 whilst I don’t think he’s currently adding much at 13. I’m not saying he’s bad at 13, just not adding value… and therefore bringing Adi in can’t make the midfield any weaker.

Our midfield is the weakness at the moment, but with 2 injuries I guess we couldn’t expect any less. I think the real problem is at 12 (the Welsh were clearly targeting his channel), but we don’t have the personel to be dropping JDV at this stage.
That’s why I think it’s worth trying Adi for a new approach.

Frans at 15, Adi at 13 and Aplon at 14 will hopefully be the team for Scotland. I dont think they will throw Mvovo in to start – probably off the bench.

  • I don’t think Fransie played very well, I don’t think he’s ever played a very good game at 13. Best shot would be to move him to 15 or 12. That’s where he’s been playing for Metro.

I agree with Fish, I don’t think his time in France is doing him any good. The standards is just not up there.

Zane did way better than I thought he did and actually I thought he did a better ob at 13 than Fransie did.

That’s what I have to say on the topic at hand.

see sometimes people only see what they want to see

again i dont think frans played great on saturday , but nor did any other backline player

2 backline players of the starting 15 put their bodies on the line and that was F steyn and gio, even though both these players also made silly mistakes here and there

but how i see it is where do those mistakes derive from??

i mentioned slipped tackles before plus habana and jdv trying the stupid intercepts all the time caused havock to our defensive lines

  • @CS (Comment 61) : it depends what we are after. If management of players for WC is a priority then give youngsters a go. If you are after them slam – then I’m sorry – 2 more games so let starting XV grind it.

Though Habana could be dropped due to nonperformance, although there are no guarantees that newcomer Mvowo will perform good at this level.

  • OKKKK HERE IS SOME NEWS

    Bok duo fail dope test
Edinburgh – Springboks Chiliboy Ralepelle and Bjorn Basson are returning home from South Africa’s tour of Britain and Ireland having returned positive samples for a banned stimulant following the Test against Ireland on November 6.

Six Nations Rugby Ltd – who administers the November internationals – informed the South African Rugby Union of the positive Tests on Sunday evening.

As a result the pair are provisionally suspended from all rugby and will return to South Africa on Monday.

Basson injured an ankle in Saturday’s win over Wales and was due to return anyway.

The players were randomly drawn for testing by anti-doping officials following the Test at the Aviva Stadium. The players have the right to request that their ‘B’ sample be tested.

The pair returned an adverse analytical finding for methylhexaneamine, a “non-specified stimulant” on the prohibited substances list of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). It is scheduled to be re-classified as a “specified stimulant” from January 1, 2011.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 96) : pity.

I had so many ideas like:

    1. Buying a stronger whip.

    2. Changing riders.

    3. Appointing a committee to study the horse.

    4. Arranging to visit other countries to see how other cultures ride
    Horses.

    5. Lowering the standards so that dead horses can be included.

    6. Reclassifying the dead horse as living impaired.

    7. Hiring outside contractors to ride the dead horse.

    8. Harnessing several dead horses together to increase speed.

    9. Providing additional funding and/or training to increase the dead
    Horse’s performance.

    10. Doing a productivity study to see if lighter riders would
    improve the dead horse’s performance.

    11. Declaring that as the dead horse does not have to be fed, it is
less costly, carries lower overhead and therefore contributes
substantially more to the bottom line of the economy than live
    horses.

    12. Rewriting the expected performance requirements for all horses.
    And, of course…

    13. Promoting the dead horse to a supervisory position.

    ;-)

Please dont drop him because he will always want that record. Besides the team knows where habana is falling short so they can cover for that but what if they get a new guy in there? You start from scratch. The Scots are the Iron and England is the Business day. We need to iron some creases out of the shirt before we go to our meeting:)
