Updated Bok team to face Scotland

Written by Wesley Weber (wpw)

Posted in :Original Content, Springboks on 16 Nov 2010 at 14:20

Peter de Villiers has announced his squad to take on the Scottish at Murrayfield on Saturday.

The suspension of Bjorn Basson and Chiliboy Ralapelle means that Zane Kirchner starts at fullback with Gio Aplon moving to right wing. Adriaan Strauss takes up Ralapelle’s place on the bench.

The other changes see Francois Hougaard replacing Ruan Pienaar on the bench and Ryan Kankowski gets his first start on tour at the back the scrum with Pierre Spies moving out of the 22 altogether.

Here is the team:

15. Zane Kirchner, 14. Gio Aplon, 13. Francois Steyn, 12. Jean de Villiers, 11. Lwazi Mvovo, 10. Morne Steyn, 9. Francois Hougaard, 8. Ryan Kankowski, 7. Juan Smith, 6. Deon Stegmann, 5. Victor Matfield (C), 4. Bakkies Botha, 3. Jannie du Plessis, 2. Bismarck du Plesses, 1. Beast

Reserves: 16. Adriaan Strauss, 17. CJ van der Linde, 18.Flip van der Merwe, 19. Willem Alberts, 20. Ruan Pienaar, 21. Pat Lambie, 22. Adi Jacobs

*** Bryan Habana fractured his hand in practice this morning and has been ruled out of the rest of the tour, his place in the starting lineup goes to Lwazi Mvovo, Adi Jacobs takes his spot on the bench.

Sharksworld would like to wish Lwazi well for his test debut and hopes he gets to round it off with a spectacular try like only he knows how to score.

  • wpw, i think its adriaan strauss…

anyways, stegman should count himself very lucky… and mr habana, or maybe this is the perfect oppertunity for bryan to get this record bogey off his back.

  • Apparently Habana might have broken his hand and is undergoing a scan to confirm this. Mvovo might start then.

  • Mvovo only gets to start cause of a injury to Habs :?: I would have started with Mvovo even if Habs was fit. Habana has been terrible on this tour. Needs to get that form back. Now hope Mvovo has a brilliant game otherwise we will see G. Van der Heever playing against England.

Stegmann was not that great in the past two games either. Would have had Alberts to start and Keegan on the bench and dropped Stegamann. Also this was a great opportunity to start with Lambie. Pity would have liked to see him play a full game. We know what we have in Morne. Hoping Lambie gets to play the full 2nd half.

  • As much as I would like some of our youngsters in the backline have a go I reckon it would have been a mistake to rest too many of the starting players.

Besides the fact that we underestimate Scotland at our peril we have to build on the semblance of continuity we’ve managed from the victories so far on tour.

Scotland’s forwards won’t be a match for us, so hopefully we can dominate to the extent that Lambie, Mvovs and Keegan get at least half an hour or so after the break, although I believe that Stegmann should not have made the starting lineup.

  • I won’t criticize the team selection as we still have to play the game. Having said that, I think it would have been a very good opportunity to give Lambie a start and possibly even Keegan. JDV looks like he could do with a rest.

Risky to make too many changes as Scotland will be another tough game…but this is the one game that we could probably afford to blood 1 or 2 of the newcomers alongside the established guard!

  • Maybe I’m just having a bad day but when I see the potential we have and I watch how the AB’s play then I can’t help but think something is wrong. We grind out mostly ugly wins while the AB’s play beautifull rugby and seem to win without breaking a sweat. Look I think our forwards are doing a really good job but they aregoing to burn out going like this when the backs aren’t coming to the party. If I was a forward that just worked my ass of to get the ball and the 9 or 10 kicks it straight back to the opposition I’d be seriously pissed off.

    Very much doubt it.

I was considering all options when selecting that one. Giving Lambie a start at 12, without the pressure of goalkicking, as Steyn would start.

Consideration was given to starting ALberts but thought it may be risky starting both Keegan and Alberts together so rather have two experienced loosies and one debutant.

Outside centre is the biggest problem area as Adi is seriously short of game time…so JDV could move out one for this game.

As for the front row would have loved some rotation and would have started with mvovo ,the sharks players got the wrong end of the stick here and poor janjies he’s not even on the bench shame.

Exactly Pokkel….we cannot underestimate Scotland…they are a reasonable side, despite the heavy defeat to the AB’s. Their improvement under Andy Robinson has been massive and their regional sides have also improved in the Heineken cup. To be honest, they are probably the equal of both Ireland and Wales and we only just scraped through both of those!

And remember, its the Scotts we’re playing. If Kanko et al plays the game of their lifes, it will be said that its against the Scotts. If they cock up, well then the inverse would be said. Catch22

Also with Morne on the field I have noticed that we have only used Jean as a bash it up 12 and Steyn has the weight behind him to do that. Once Steyn has done the one dimensional bash it up go forward stuff, there will be more room for De Villers to move around in. Just my opinion though, what do you think?

  • Look, Steyn is honestly not a shit flyhalf, last time I checked the Bulls were playing some pretty awesome rugby and Steyn contributed to that. And I know you guys can’t wait to bring up your win and the CC, but the better benchmark is the S14. And he was good there. And has been good in the past. Lets all be honest here and admit the Boks haven’t exactly shone this year, and thats not just Morne. Lambie is being pretty well managed if you ask me and will most likely start against the BaaBaa’s and I think thats right, if we’re thumping the Scots at half time (which we should be) he can come on then. Plenty game time for him and much less pressure to perform.

But we all know what Frans/Habana (and probably more) can offer the team, there’s a reason they have so many medals. I know they’re in a slump, but I’m gonna back them to get out of it. And, with no doubt in my mind, (barring injury) I’d take them to the WC.

It’s just a gamble you take on when to send a player back to their province to improve their form, or whether you try ride it out.

Ice, I think you will find that I defended John Smit throughout the S14 when people said he is not good enough to be in the team and he should not be selected for the Boks.

I am defending Spies because he was the incumbent since the Tri Nations and I think he proved these last 2 tests that he is good enough to play test rugby.

I think Rob finds it strange that I am supporting players from the Bulls but like I said earlier, they are representing the Boks which means I will support each and every player, even those I dislike (Frans, Ruan, CJ)

So, there you have it!! ;-)

  • If Morne and Lambie’s kicking stats were the same, bad/good, doesn’t matter. Who would we be playing now?

After you asked yourself that question and came to the answer (Lambie), consider that it’s maybe a better idea to use a Frans Steyn or Ruan Pienaar for kicking duties. Steyn has a good kicking average in Europe. Remember when he kicked for the Boks or even the Sharks it was always to put over the long shots. You know those type of kicks that’s a bonus if they go over. We have never used him as a regular kicker.

It may be worth it to see how he goes, then we can select the best players available and not just select a guy for the one skill he has.
