The Leopards have lured nine new players into their squad for 2011 season that was announced today. As is the case at most union’s, the Leopards started their pre-season training on Monday.

Three players who represented the Leopards at junior level were welcomed back to the squad. Flank Robert Kruger (Leopards under-19 and under-20) scrumhalf Whestley Moolman and prop Peet Vorster (both Craven Week Leopards players) returned to the North West Province.

Other new faces includes that of Vainon Willis of the Bulls and NWU-Pukke hooker Stoffel Duvenhage, who will be looking to make as big an impact as he did in the Varsity Cup. Shimlas centre Charl Weideman and Tuks lock MB Lusaseni are hoping to follow suit when they join the team at the start of the Currie Cup season. Leopards under-21 captain Joubert Engelbrecht was rewarded with a senior contract after an exemplary season.

Lock Brendon Snyman is another addition to the team after he enjoyed a stint at the Eastern Province Kings. He has been tasked with filling the void left by retired second-rower Draad Linde and Anthonie Gronum who is on loan to Border.

For many of these players 2011 will be their third year representing the Leopards in the premier division of the Currie Cup.

Leopards squad for 2011:

Backs: Danie Dames, Colin Lloyd, Danie Roux, Dumisane Matyeshana, Vainon Willis, Jovan Bowles, Joubert Engelbrecht, Neill Jacobs, Kempie Rautenbach, Charl Weideman, Clayton Durand, Cecil Dumond, Theo van Wyk, Whestley Moolman.

Forwards: Divan Kotze, Os van der Walt, Eric Coetzee, BG Uys, Peet Vorster, Gavin Williamson, Stoffel Duvenhage, Rynard Landman, Brad Mockford, Gys Briedenhan, Brendon Snyman, MB Lusaseni, Thabo Mamojele, Christo van Niekerk, Robert Kruger, Danie Crous, Victor Joubert, Riaan Swanepoel, RW Kember.

  • Walter Venter was on loan there, he is still a Lion’s player, played for the leopards in the currie cup to get game time cause he was never going to displace doppies. What happen to that leopard’s wing, Bom Samaai? He had a good currie cup last year but has disapeared since then.

  • He is fairly decent.
Better than the dross we signed in recent times.
I’m referring to the likes of Juries and Frikkie Welsh.
Although Welsh did a good job at 13 while the Boks were not available.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 1) : Not that it means much but Wesley Moolman (sic) is the older brother of the highly rated Bulls u19 centre Bradley. They are Monnas old boys = Golden Lions. Wesley captained the Lions Craven Week side in which Elton Jantjies was flyhalf. WM was also the Bulls back up scrummie at the u21 final in Durbs just a few weeks ago. He’s therefore new to the Leopards setup.
I’m sad to see that SP Marais the talented Leopards u21 fullback is not in the mix even though he partipated in the C/C playoffs. Do you perhaps know why he’s not there?
The Leopards (& Pukke) play a big part in junior rugby in SA so I hope their senior side can cement their place in the C/C Prem.Div. This will keep the better sponsorship money coming in.

  • @bergshark (Comment 18) : Yeah I’ve also seen him play at u21 level. He’s a super creative player on attack – a bit of Stephen Larkhamness about him. I found out from my favourite Boishaai blogger that he didn’t play first team at school coz of injury, so he’s having to make it to the top the hard way. Either that or they have an excellent talent scout in Potch. Probably a combo of both.

  • I have it on good authority, that he was loaned out to the Leopards, because he was seen as being to small for a center. The coaching staff want the centers to weigh in excess of 90kg.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 26) : Don’t lose fact of the sight that altho the Leopards may “suck” they got to the C/C PD legitimately and have earned their right to stay there fairly as well. EP have these huge dreams but are usually clueless on putting the right foundations in place. They’ve had years to get their act together. You don’t become a “King” in one season. Rather they should learn a thing or 2 from the Griquas on how to run a successful operation. Small steps first. Lets hope the Kings aren’t bankrupt in 6mths time.

  • @bergshark (Comment 30) : 100% right Bergshark. Great talent coming thru their schools. Financially things are tight down there so holding on to these schoolboys is is tough, but Griquas have proved that a small union can stay competitive at the higher level.

  • Hi im the sister of SP Marais and let me start with thanks for the support, but im also here to set a few things right….well yes SP did not play first team due to an injury but he has been working hard. he was never just a “loan” to the leopards hahaha  (sorry for laughing its just that he never played for WP) he played Boland o/21 in 2009 and then this year he played pukke and leopards o/21. next year he wil play for EP Kings. Anymore questions about him i’ll answer them all.

  • @only family (Comment 66) : Thanks for the info on SP. Sad that he won’t be in the Currie Cup Premier Division next year, but nevertheless I hope to see him there soon (maybe not with the Kings tho). Please wish him all the best from me. Maybe you could ask him who he models his style of play on (a player?)
BTW: the “loan” issue is explained above. A blogger was referring to Walter Venter and I thought he was talking about SP, so just some wires crossed but it was straighten out – don’t think it was suggested that he was playing of WP only asked.
