Charl is a BOK!

Sharks scrumhalf Charl McLeod has been rewarded for his utterly outstanding domestic form this season by being called up to the Springbok tour squad. Team mate Odwa Ndungane and Lions hooker Bandise Maku have also been summoned to return the tour party to 30 players, following the loss of Bryan Habana, Bjorn Basson and Chilliboy Rallepele.

Talking of the call-ups, Bok coach Peter de Villiers had the following to say: “I called the players to let them know the good news and they’re all really excited to be joining us,” said de Villiers. “I considered calling them in this week but with all the other disruptions I thought it’d be better to focus as much as we could on what is a very important Test against Scotland.

“They can start with us fresh on Monday morning at the beginning of a new Test week.”

Sharksworld would like to wish Odwa and Charl all the best and extend our warmest congratulations to both!

  • I’m really chuffed for Charl and Odwa. Wow what a season Charl is having. From bench warmer to Springbok in a year.

  • Is the Sharks website correct – does McLeod really only have 6 S14 caps?

If thats the case then surely Duvenhage or Pretorius should’ve got a call-up?
I’m happy for you lot and happy for Charl but is this not a wee bit premature?

If we’re brutally honest, his chances of playing a test are basically zero anyway

  • Pretorius maybe feel bit hard done but Duvenhuge?….nobody outside of the WP supporters rates him.

End of year selections have a history of pulling players with limited caps into the Bok fold with varying degrees of success. I personally feel the way McLeod gets the flow of the game moving and in particular the back-line, could benefit the Boks were he to be given a chance.

On a not so good note – Divvy is on record as saying it would not be right to replace the banned players – what now?

Anyway I always thought that Div would use Francois Steyn / Ruan to cover hooker.

  • I think the fact that he was called up will be a great motivator. Even though he might not play he will want to play even better next year to get another callup. And to be honest I think he might be in a better position then FH. Remember when FdP returns he will be playing from the bench, whereas Carl is first choice at the Tank.

But then again we have a few good scrumhalfs in the country.

Ah come on mate – how do you say a guy’s in-form when he’s only played 6 s14 games? How many of those did he even start?
Sharks website also has him down at 14 provincial games. So 20 games in total? Assuming he played half as sub that puts him at like 20 hours of professional rugby?

Take off the black-and-white-tinted glasses mate.

Whether he gets a game or not is irrelevant – other players are just as talented but have actually proved themselves by at least completing a season in the super14.

My view is based on the fact that nobody can tell me that a player has been adequately tested in 6 games.

If form was all anybody was ever selected on then we’d put out 15 different players every season and there’d be long patches that we’d never have seen Johnny Smit in the green n gold.

I think we’ve seen enough of him in the competition to feel confident he’ll do the job. If you’re going to question his selection, then how can you be comfortable with Lambie, Jantjes, Mvovo or even Basson, who have a similar lack of Super 14 experience?

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 43) : you and the other WP boys keep banging the Grant drum, sure, but the reality is, he has never really accomplished much at Super 14 or international level either. So I agree, we had no choice at flyhalf other than Pat and Jantjes – and even taking the latter with is a waste of a spot, if you ask me.

Scrumhalf, I would argue, is about the same. There isn’t a scrumhalf more deserving of a call-up right now than McLeod. Pretorius even got dropped by Griquas during the season, while Duvenage is simply not up to standard and is only first choice at Province because there is no competition!

Pisses me off that Ricky isn’t playing as well as we know he can. Dewald only brings quick service to the side but his decision making is poor.

He is rather average and I’d prefer Pretorius or Vermaak ahead of him.

  • Bringing in the argument that Jano vermaak should have been called up in stead of McLeod is a bit of six against half a dozen. Every coach has his favourites, no matter how crap they are in the eyes of unblinkered fans or in reality.

This has happened in just about every position over the years and sometimes there really is no place for a very good player like Vermaak, simply because the incumbent is the likes of FdP and the second choice is the coach’s gatgabba.

A season or two passes and someone else, often a newbie, comes into the form of his life and leapfrogs the previously in form favourite of the fans.

I know this argument has been done to death, but guys like Jano, Charl and even Hynie Adams should have been selected before January. Don’t get me wrong, I think January has the attitude and his defense is excellent, but he is just too slow to the ball of late.

    And such is life.
