Former South African Under-18 international fullback Greg Goosen signed for Top 14 strugglers La Rochelle on Wednesday from rivals Racing-Metro.

The 27-year-old has signed for the remainder of the campaign with the option of extending his stay for another two seasons.

Goosen has been at Racing-Metro for four seasons since joining from Super 14 outfit Natal Sharks and scored 284 points, including 12 tries, in both the Second Division and Top 14 action.

Goosen started out at Berea Rovers and was on the fringe of making the Sharks fullback jersey his own when he suddenly packed his bags and joined Racing Metro on a deal that most youngsters can only dream of.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 1) :

I am not 100% sure that he actually ever made the Sharks team.

I remember that he was coming through the ranks and was the next big thing at fullback.

The fact that he plays in France doesn’t really tell you anything either, does it?!

  • it is sad to lose talent and we talk about it a lot but at the time he was in the mix…the reality is there were just better players to choose from…maybe he will return in 3 years a different players like percy or stephan and be valuable…but…with the sharks academy and the talent coming through…i doubt it!!!

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 14) : the French sites love to “big up” the guys that come over. So if the guy held a junior Sharks contract, they would definitely say (or at least imply) that he played for the super 14 side.

Also remember that Wikipedia can be edited by anyone and any entries about people that aren’t really that famous are likely to have been written by their mom/dad/agent/greatest stalker fan

We don’t get to hear much about the WP age group players either… well, except for the 3-4 that go on to play Super rugby for the Bulls every year :)

The players that went to the Bulls/ TUKS (got contracted) after they have spent a year at the WPRI are the following:

    Francois Hougaard 2008
    Stephan Dippenaar 2008
    Andre Coetzee 2010
    Stephan Schoeman 2010
    Ulrich Beyers 2010
    Jurgin Visser 2010
    Jean Rousouw 2010

    Not Gerhard van der Heever.

im going to have to pull out those SA Rugby and double check what they wrote on that article…
