There has been a lot of movement in the ranks of the lads currently busy writing Matric finals. Post the festivities in Plett, some of our finest rugby talent will be packing their bags and moving on from the fields where their rugby was learnt.

It’s the professional era so this is to be expected and one shouldn’t get too excited about it. There are crucial choices that are made by players and families alike such as where the lads are going to study, are they are going to play rugby full time, what do the future prospects of the union hold and lets be honest here, who is going to pay the most!

Lets have a look at where the lads of the SA U/18 High Performance 2010 squad have ended up for the 2011 season ahead:

Blue Bulls: William Small-Smith (Centre, Grey College, Free State); Wiaan Liebenberg (Flank, Drostdy, Boland); Nardus van der Walt (No.8, Affies, Blue Bulls); Rudi van Rooyen (Scrumhalf, Affies, Blue Bulls); Andile Jho (Centre, Dale, Border); Ekkert Thomas (Prop, Duineveld, Griquas Country Districts); Jason Thomas (Hooker, Muir, Eastern Province)

The Sharks: Paul Jordaan (Centre, Grey College, Free State); Allan Dell (Prop, Queen’s, Border); Khaya Majola (Flank, Westville, KwaZulu-Natal); Siseko Jafta (Flank, St Charles, Kwazulu-Natal)

Western Province: Centre: Patrick Howard (Centre, Michaelhouse, KwaZulu-Natal); Steven Kitshoff (Prop, Paul Roos, Western Province)
At school: Tshepo Motale (Prop, Bishops, Western Province); Sikumbuzo Notshe (Flank, Wynberg Boys’ High, Western Province)

Golden Lions: Ruan Botha (Lock, Jeugland, Valke), Fabian Booysen (Flank, Florida, Golden Lions), Ruan Venter (Lock, Monument, Golden Lions), Ettienne Oosthuizen (Lock, Bergsig, Leopards), Marius David Schmidt (Flyhalf, Monument, Golden Lions); Muhammad Luqmaan Ismail (Wing, Paarl Gym, WP); Justin van Wyk (Hooker, Menlopark, Blue Bulls).

Free State Cheetahs: Johan Goosen (Flyhalf, Grey College, Free State); Neill Jordaan (No.8, Grey College, Free State); Also think Kevin Luiters (Scrumhalf, Grey College, Free State) is staying but not confirmed.
At School: Ruwellyn Isbel (Wing, Grey College, Free State); Leroy Bitterhout (Wing, Moved to HTS Louis Botha from the Boland); Neetling Fouche (Prop, Grey College, Free State)

Springboks 7′s Academy: Craig Barry (Fullback), Tshotsho Mbovane (Wing) & William Small-Smith (Centre) have spent time with Paul Treu’s National Sevens Squad. Barry and Mbovane are listed on Paul Treu’s website as being contracted.

Uncertain Future: Richmond Collins (Wing, Pretoria Boys, Blue Bulls), Siviwe Soyizwapi (Fullback, Dale College, Border).

These 3 players were all born in 1992 so should be leaving school this year. They will have surely been gobbled up by one of the Unions. Interestingly Richmond Collins is a real flyer on the wing with a recorded time of 10.51 for the 100m so maybe he’s going into Athletics!

If anyone knows what the future holds for the 3 please let me know and I will add them in somewhere else.

  • thanks for this, Billy.

How sure are you about Neill Jordaan, though? My info is that he’s staying in Bloem, having turned down the bursary offer fomr the Sharks.

  • Hi Sportbilly, at the end of the junior C/C season, Kevin Luiters played for the Vrystaat u19. Altho not the all important element, unions generally only select contracted schoolboys players for their u19 teams – so a good bet would be he’s staying in Vrystaat.

  • @bergshark (Comment 17) : Bergshark, I think you’re thinking about Tshotsho Mbovane, the Paul Roos and WP c/week no.13 – he is quick and has a wicked step. Little wonder he’s in the sevens set-up now, but I think he and Barry will be available for WP u19 next year if they are not called up to the SA Sevens. Also he would have faced Willa Small-Smith in the C/W final. Jordaan was inside centre.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 22) : All Sharks supporters should be holding thumbs for Fred Zeilinga. He is a talent and a half. We take so much flak from outsiders about lack of homegrown talent so here’s a 100% KZN product and he’s a humble likeable youngster as well.
However I wouldn’t dare rate him above Johan Goosen. Goosen has Springbok written all over him. People want to stereotype him coz he has a big boot, but boy can he read a game and make good decisions as well. I can see him being fast-tracked to senior rugby by 2012.

  • @Mocho (Comment 31) : Mocho, Duncan Campbell the kingpin Westville no.10 is going to WP. Funnily enough we’re getting the WP no.1 flyhalf Gavin Hauptfleish of HJS Paarl. And I have this theory about players that leave the beautiful W/Cape to come to KZN involving big promises and lots of money. My worst fear is that the 10 jersey has been promised to him, which may be bad news for Fred Z. Hopefully my theory is rubbish.

There’s also been a lot of uncertainty about Leroy Bitterhout. Some people seem to think he’s one of many Boland schoolboys that the Bulls have contracted even tho he’s still only in Gr.11. If you still follow College, I think they’re on their way back up. They’ve got some good guys coming back next year like Muller who lineout throw-ins aside, I really like and this good centre Phillips. Also guys like Odendaal, Smith, Molelekwa, Makiwane, Shezi, Sithole and Olley. It could be a good KZN season for them.
This year Jacobs, Klaasen and Ungerer were good and Pennesi helped turn their season around but my favourite player of their’s by far was Dean Mullis. Do you know what he’s doing next year.

  • @bergshark (Comment 54) : Yes Bergshark, the contracting of schoolboys to beat the strict quota rules is definitely happening. And the Bulls and Lions are the unions whose motives and ethics are being questioned. At the @latic sevens finals, some Paarl Boys supporters were surprised to see their potential 2011 centre combination run out for Monument from Krugersdorp.
We don’t have the same kind of problem here in KZN when it comes to fulfilling quota but up in Gauteng there are stories of 3rd team players that make Craven Week ahead of good 1st team players coz of the quota. So one can see where the desperation to contract schoolboys from Boland is coming from.

De Wet Ras was around when I first started watching rugga. I’ll always remember how he’d stand on the far side of the 22 to maximise his long diagonal 22-drop restart. We don’t see that anymore. His son Egbert just finished schooling at Grey Bloem last year.

BTW Gerrie’s younger brother Riaan played 2yrs 1st team at GCB as well as SA schools in 2009. I saw him on the wing for Freestate u19 a few weeks ago, but he had a quiet game. He’s very tall for a back and maybe he’ll make a Pierre Spies type move to the backrow soon??? Not sure if Gerrie has other school age brother’s. I know he has another brother who plays lock Luaan or something is that brothers name but he must be in his late 20′s by now.

  • The schools are doing it for the prestige of being the best rugby school (all competition-driven)

  • @chaz (Comment 67) : Just about every school has a budget to offer sports bursaries and has been doing so for years. These bursaries don’t involve the Unions, so kids can go where they like once they’ve passed matric. The goal is help the school perform better even tho’ part of the reward for the school is in the form of selection of the player to the provincial schools team for either Craven, Academy and Grant Khomo week.
However this RU contracting schoolboys is new. When RU’s start getting involved then it becomes serious business. The word going around is that the kids or their parents are being offered monthly payments. That’s way different from traditional bursaries. Often it involves the player having to relocate to the Union’s jurisdiction. In these cases the player can choose which school he wants to attend in the area but his first commitment is to the Union who’ll in all likelihood continue to contract him once he’s completed matric.

  • @chaz (Comment 72) : Many folks in Bloemfontein probably share your views, but as things stand in SA as a whole, it really doesn’t matter which provincial team a schoolboy plays for. If he achieves something special, the school he attended more often than not gets the credit. E.g. if Doppies made the Boks tomorrow, Port Natal HS would go bonkers even tho’ he plays for the Lions. I just read how happy the whole of Burgersdorp Vrystaat are that Hendre Fourie is in the England team.

  • I don’t rate small smith, my hats off to the sharks-for signing less players but picking the best…I think pat howard will not fit into the province game…sharks would off been much better for his career where the expect there players to stay on their feet and keep the ball…the bulls would all so
    be a better bet…
