Vodacom Cheetahs flanker Juan Smith was on Sunday named as captain of the Springbok squad for Saturday’s season-ending finale against the Barbarians at Twickenham.

Smith assumes the captaincy from Victor Matfield who was one of seven players released as the squad was reduced to 23 players.

Matfield and Jean de Villiers were both injured in the 21-11 victory over England on Saturday and they are joined by five other players in returning to their homes. Matfield suffered a rib cartilage injury while De Villiers has a mild groin strain.

Frans Steyn (Racing Metro) and Ruan Pienaar (Ulster) return to their European clubs as Saturday’s match falls outside the November international window. The Vodacom Blue Bulls trio of Pierre Spies, Morné Steyn and Deon Stegmann have also been released to return to South Africa.

The Springbok team for the match will be named on Wednesday.

The Springbok squad for the match against the Barbarians is:

Backs: Gio Aplon, Francois Hougaard, Adi Jacobs, Elton Jantjies, Zane Kirchner, Patrick Lambie, Charl McLeod, Lwazi Mvovo, Odwa Ndungane.

Forwards: Willem Alberts, Bakkies Botha, Keegan Daniel, Jannie du Plessis, Bismarck du Plessis, Alistair Hargreaves, Ryan Kankowski, Bandise Maku, Tendai Mtawarira, Coenie Oosthuizen, Juan Smith (captain), Adriaan Strauss, CJ van der Linde, Flip van der Merwe.

Do you think Bismarck will be happy to sit out? They would have sent him home no?

Anyway, I like the look of Alberts at 6 and Keegan at 8. We all know what Keegan do from 8!!

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 5) : well – who calls the shots, Bissie or the coach? Actually, it’s a valid question now that the chief selector (Matfield) is going home… :)

It’s a weirdly unbalanced squad. 14 forwards and 9 backs – means we will have to haev a 5-2 bench, with either two props or two hookers. Unless they pick Strauss as a loose forward reserve (which makes not a lot of sense) I reckon one of the hookers will sit out and we’ll have two props on the bench.

Now if you have to pick a hooker to leave out, it should probably be the one who has played virtually all of the last 4 tests. Assuming this match is about giving gametime to the fringe players. If not, then start with Bissie and it’s tough takkie for Maku or Strauss

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) :

    Valid points yeah..

But then if you go for the resting theme, you would think Bakkies would sit out as well.

We will have to wait until Wednesday to see..

  • Rob, I am with Richard on this one, why would Bissie still be there if he is to be left out? Think he will start or either be on the bench. Or Strauss on the bench.

I think Alberts has earned a start. Also hope that Lambie gets to start at fh. If they start with Jantjies at fh then it will show they have no fait in Lambie at fh and that would dent his confedence and not fair on him really after been coming on from the bench for the whole of this tour so far.

My feeling though the team will be:

    1. Beast
    2. Bissie
    3. Jannie. (CJ can sit on the bench for giving that try away yesterday  )
    4. Bakkies
    5. Hargreaves
    6. Keegan
    7. Juan (capt)
    8. Alberts
    9. Hougaard (would love to have seen Mcleod get a start)
    10. Jantjies.
    11. Mvovo
    12. Lambie
    13. Adi
    14. Aplon
    15. Zane

    14 Gio
    13 hougaard
    12 adi
    11 mvovo
    10 lambie
    09 mcleod
    08 kanko
    07 alberts

  • I would love to see Jantjies 12 lambie 10, jantjies has a way of getting the ball throught the tackle..that makes his valuable in this setup-where his dicision making at 10 is a bit dodge at times…where I like lambie at 10…jantjies makes me think of luke mcalister when he off loads in the tackle, jacobs at 13 and mvovo and gio on the wings…kanko 8 alberts 6 jean7…

  • This weekends game is really a waste of time.
Yes it should be entertaining rugby-weather permitting.
But what what is the purpose other than making money, which by the sounds of it isnt going to be as much as expected as the stadium is not even half sold out.
Also seeing that a lot of the youngsters look set to getting sum game time, what can we honestly take from their performance against the Baabaas…if they perform well does that mean they will be picked for the Mid year tours next year…i doubt it as Super14 form plus returning players will play a big role in selections. So having said that why not be brave and go for broke cos at the end of the day win or lose nothing will come of it. So start lambie at 10 with janjies and jacobs at centre. start alberts at lock with hargreaves and have smith, kanko and daniel as the loosies. give coenie and strauss a start. your bench could then include bakkies(lets see what he is like as an impact player),bismarck, mccloed, beast etc.
But with Snor in charge anything could happen!!

  • @Letgo (Comment 25) : Although even better would just be to see the Sharks loosies together. Juan will start in all other tests, we don’t need him to start this game to, lets rather give a few players a chance. Like Charl McLeod and Keegan, who will most likely not get selected for the Boks again.

  • The Barbarian squad consists mainly of Kiwis and Aussies, so if the Boks want to win the game, they will have to pick the strongest possible squad.
