In doing a bit of research to come up with questions for the Ultimate Sharks Fan competition, I stumbled upon a few pictures of old Sharks jerseys along the way. Tha started me thinking.
I know I have certainly owned my fair share of Natal and Sharks jerseys along the way. It started with a very generic (and I’m sure, completely unofficial) Natal jersey that my dad had back in the late 80s. I stole it not long after the 1990 Currie Cup triumph and took great pride in wearing it to rugby practice at Pretoria Boys’ High in 1991! That one lasted until 1994, although, to be honest, I did buy one of those awesome reversible Natal jackets made by Instinct in 1992. It was legendary in how kak it looked!
In 94 I got one of the new Kappa Currie Cup jerseys, which I still have to this day. That purchase coincided with about the worst period of Sharks rugby at any stage in the 90s, but such is life! In 1998 I went a little nuts, first buying the Coastal Sharks Super 12 jersey (the one with the green and red stripes at the bottom) and then also getting a Currie Cup jersey. Both were made by Reebok and both, I fear, disappeared after a house break-in in 1999.
I then bought one of the new 2001 Super 12 jerseys (the grey one) and what was bizarre about mine was that I bought it in that strange period where the Sharks had no headline sponsor. The Canon sponsorship came to an end at the end of the 2000 season and the Sharks only negotiated a new deal with Mr Price (in the form of Red) halfway through the 2001 Super 12. They played their first 6 or so matches in a jersey with no sponsor and I just happen to have one. I wonder if it’s valuable?
I was ten lucky enough to win not one, but two signed Sharks jerseys. One was a 2006 Super 14 jersey and the other a 2009 Super 14 jersey. In between those, I also bought a 2009 Super 14 jersey, which unfortunately didn’t survive a particularly vigorous tumble-drying session (all the plastic logos melted). Then, of course, there’s my superb limited edition 2010 pink Cansa jersey, which I have yet to see, but I’m sure it’s awesome!
So tell me… which jerseys do you guys have? I am going to try and take picture of mine to put up here. Do send in snaps of what you have – let’s try and find the most noteworthy jerseys out there – be they the oldest, the strangest, the ones with the most signatures or maybe – just maybe – one that actually belonged to a player. Show us your jerseys, Sharks fans! Don’t be shy.
