Beast rumours gather momentum

An article on Sport24 today has reignited speculation about the future of Beast Mtawarira, who is being brazenly pursued by the Lions despite having recently signed a new Sharks contract.

Needless to say, the rumour-mill is abuzz, with Tank Lanning suggesting on Twitter that Beast is in some sort of financial trouble, which the Lions are offering to get him out of. This is presumably over and above a salary offer rumoured to be a good few multiples of what he is currently earning in Durban.

Further allegations are that there is some irregularity in the contract that Beast recently signed with the Sharks, which may allow him to bail out on that deal. We reported that story a few weeks back. Since then, though, we had confirmation from Beast’s advisor and mentor, Jeremy Thompson, that he would not be leaving Durban.

Things move very fast, though, with a number of my sources in Durban no longer willing to back up Thompson’s line on this. It seems, in certain circles, the move to Joburg is considered a foregone conclusion.

More on this as it develops, but judging by the way the wind is blowing, I think that we as Sharks fans would do well to brace ourselves for a future that doesn’t include Beast Mtawarira.

  • Whatever happened to the rule of not being able to approach players unless their contract is close to expiring (I think it was a 6 month window or something) is that gone?

Can’t believe we (all provinces) are still contracts wrong.
I for one will be sad to see him leave the Sharks, his name is synonymous with them.

  • Interesting….I’m sure some people will be saying ‘what goes around comes around’

The Sharks will be OK without the Beast but we’ll much rather have him in the Sharks tank next year.

  • I’d hate to see him go – and I don’t think there is another prop in world rugby that is as good as he is.

That said, no player is indispensable, and we will survive without him.

If he does leave, it won’t be long until all unions bring on board big money-spinners, and the game of rugby would have changed.

On the plus side, it may mean less players leaving SA to chase big cheques.

  • hey guys long time! Must say if the beast is in financial trouble and we want the best for our players and we cannot offer it to him I could understand him moving ,as heartbreaking as it would be! needless to say the loss of the all springbok front row ,and having john smit as a mentor for him ,becuase lets be honest john smit is a front row legend , to move away from guys like bismarc ,jannie and john wouldnt make rugby sense at all

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 11) : I’m here. No spin. You guys know my feelings on player movement.

@molly (Comment 1) : It’s not six months, it’s 120 days before expiration of an existing contract. That is the window in which a player can be contacted directly, without the knowledge of the current union. Should a buying union approach the players current union directly, the window becomes moot.

I would like to see Beast in a Lion’s jersey. Of course I would. I do feel though, for Pat Cilliers if he comes, and will also be disappointed should it be that Beast gets ‘released’ via a contract loophole.

  • Beast has shown loyalty. He signed again didn’t he. But if he has financial troubles and the sharks union can’t help him out with that, then I can understand why he would go. It would suck though.

I would probably yell beast even if he’s playing for the Lions.

  • @Letgo (Comment 19) : any deal needs a willing buyer and a willing seller. Sharks would be silly to try and keep Beast against his will. Fact is, the amount of money the Lions want to pay him is, quite simply, ridiculous. It is FAR more than he is worth. So good luck to him, I say, but I don’t blame the Sharks at all for being unwilling or unable to match it.

  • They should place donation buckets at all the turnstiles and encourage all fans to donate 10 bucks on entering. 45000 X 10 = R450 000. This should help in relieving Beasts debt. They can even give some to JP Pietersen for showing loyalty to the Sharks when turning down a massive offer from the Lions, to re sign with the Sharks.

I, unfortunately, cant get to the games but I will gladly pledge R20.00 per home game.

He could come on in the final 30 or so minutes as a calm head.

    I like the idea.

  • @chaz (Comment 79) : Dude, you have to admit, after picking up Jean Deysel, Rory Kockett, Gerhard Mostert, Willem Alberts, Louis Ludick, etc etc etc from the Lions, we cant be too stressed that they have taken moves to claim a few from the Sharks too. It was a matter of time before someone from the countries richest city decided to pull out a checkbook and reverse the disaster that has been the Lions franchise since the retirement of Pienaar.

  • @pablo: only alberts and ludik from the names you mentioned, come from lions schools’..they sign up youngsters from all over the country ,just like any other union..why they can’t identify the talent once there or can’t keep others happy,is open to debate..

  • @Original Champion (Comment 83) : Lions didn’t really notice his abilities…they basically let us have him…What a mistake on their part, Deysel is Awesome and so chuffed he is with the Black and White.
    My team if Beast departs:
    1.Smit (C)
    2. Bissie
    3. Jannie
    4. Sykes
    5. Mossie
    6. Keegs
    7. Deysel(when 100%)
    8. Kanko/Alberts…depending on weather, field conditions and oppossition.

    9. Charl
    10. Patty
    11. Mvovo
    12. Bosman
    13. JLP
    14. JPP
    15. Ludik

    16.Burden
    17.Eugene
    18.Skeato
    19.Botes
    20.Big Willem/Kanko
    21.Hoffman
    22.Adi Jacobs

Would love to see the team look like that…hope Beast stays and i have to modify the line up slightly. Sharks forever!!! Durbs…what a place to play rugby!!!!

  • @JJR (Comment 87) : U putting Mostert ahead of Hargreaves?

The lions taking a lot of our depth players (obviously not Beast) can be viewed in a positive light because it does give a lot of younger players a slightly easier road to the first team and more opportunities, whereas if those players were still there we may lose some very talented players because the line in front of them is simply to long.

  • @RuckingFun (Comment 92) : Beast carries the ball well…to fill the void i would put mossie. Skeate is a good impact player, very mobile. Hargreaves is just a guy that is too incosistent 4 me. He is a good lock, but nothing more…he kinda just does the basics. Mossie can carry it up, awesome at clearing out and if i remember well he was very good at line out time while he was at the lions. He was a good signing and i am keen to see him get some game time for The Black and White now that he is 100% fit and strong.

  • @rekinek (Comment 90) : Exactly. Where I am a little disappointed is that if I am not mistaken, Beast signed a 3 year contract with the Sharks a few weeks ago (not a few years like Alberts and Ludick). To have such a sudden change of direction, regardless of the money offered is a little poor. You cant pledge commitment with a team, and then literally a few weeks later drop it all out because you got a better offer. Even in the age of professionalism that sucks. I am very interested to hear what the contract implications will be. I dont suggest the sharks hold onto him if he wants to go, that would be silly, but maybe a sizeable transfer fee is in order.

  • So when are we going to know what’s cutting with this story?

Surely, if Beast has signed with the Lions, it would have gone past the rumour stage, because the obligatory public crap-throwing and general nastiness between Durbs and Jozi would have commenced.

    Oder?
