Kockott’s future confirmed

News24 let the cat out of the bag this morning, by confirming that Rory Kockott will return to the Lions. Sharksworld was told about this move a few weeks ago and finally had confirmation from within the squad on Tuesday evening.

Our information was that neither Union was planning to announce the move until the new year and we respected that embargo, but since it has now broken elsewhere, I guess there’s ‘s very little point in not confirming it from our side as well.

Speculation has been mounting about the enigmatic scrumhalf’s future ever since he was not announced as one of the Sharks’ contracted players for 2011. Rumours last year linked him to a move to Western Province, but despite some quite credible sources insisting that a move to the Cape was on the cards, nothing came of it. The Lions have again proved true to form and signed the player despite having ample depth in the position, including one of their better players over the past few seasons, Jano Vermaak. Promising Leopards scrumhalf Michael Bondesio has also joined the Lions.

So cheers then, Rory! We wish you nothing but the best for your career at the Lions and beyond and appreciate all the efforts you have put in on behalf of the Sharks and their fans over the last few seasons.

  • Well this sucks.

How many more Sharks are they gonna sign?

Yes we took 2 of their players, yes it was under rather dubious circumstances . . . But surely enough is enough already?!

Let him go, this opens the door for both McLeod and Hoffman not to have to worry about his glum face all over the place.

Remeber we also have Cronje in reserve.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) : Yeah, to be honest I think if we can choose who to let go it would probably be Kockett or Vulindlu but it bugs me that Lions are going after so many of our players.

Have they signed players from other unions at all except Maku??

I for one will miss Rory. Think Sharks should have held onto him. Remember how well he and Ruan played in the S14 against Stormers. Hope Hoffman lives up to the hype about him, cause if we get a injury to McLeod we in trouble. For me McLeod is 2nd behind FdP he is that good. Hope PdV can see that. Hougaard is a brilliant player too but would play him as back up to Fourie at outside centre or on the wing for the Boks.

  • Cheers Rory and thanks for the memories.

I hope you can get back the form you showed a couple of years ago when I rated you as one of the best scrummies in SA. Although I would have preferred you to stay at the Sharks because I know you have lots to offer, it is probably best for all parties if you moved on, as the Sharks management have shown their intentions to have Charl and Hoffman as their first choice No 9′s. Good luck to the Lions with your signing, should be interesting to see how you manage 3 players all wanting to start each match.

  • I would rather have Kockett on my side than play against him. He`s a threat!

But yeah, it is a good opportunity for him to get more game time.

Thing is though, Lions have so much money, what`s to stop them from taking 7 or so other players from us as well, then we`ll be the ones with 100 to one odds in the super 15 again not the Lions.

They did say revenge was sweet!! Never mind Boys, Beast is not buttoned up yet, so live in hope for a little bit of loyalty, but if they offered me a lot of tom, like is being reported, I might be tempted, the career of a rugby player is short and then Loyalty is no where to be found.

You can’t throw a bunch of big names together and expect them to play a winning game. It helps to have the superstars but they need to have team all playing on the same page.

  • good for the Lions . I think Kockott is a good buy for them plus he is a reliable goalkicker. Adfter watching young Elton against Baa Baas they might have been somewhat worried.

Not sure whether such a great move for Kocket because he won’t overtake Vermaak in pecking order so he will be exactly at the same situation there as at the Sharks. But it seems to me that his fall from grace had to do with something more than Charl’s good form.

  • Kockott has not renewed his contract with the Durban team and according to Brian van Zyl, the CEO, Kockott only found a home with the Lions in the last day or two.

“He was with us this week, saying he can’t manage anything (with the Lions) and asking if we could help him.”

“We were willing to extend his contract by another six months, but the Lions suddenly sent word that they would sign him,” said Van Zyl.

Eish!!!!! From the N24 article it sounds like the Lions didn’t really want him.

Lions buy Pat Cilliers to give him a chance to play because, he is tired of playing in Beast’s shadow. And then they try and buy Beast as well?

Now they have 3 GOOD scrumhalves on their books, Bondesio, Vermaak and Kockott. Someone is going to be pissed off.

I wonder why management would choose a less good player over a better player (I also believe Kockott is better than Hoffman)

    Attitude? Sulkiness?

  • Think this opens a door for the return of Ruan? Now that we have Lambie, Potgieter, et al, he shouldn’t have to worry about playing Flyhalf. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him back in the Black & White.

  • @Original Champion: be interesting to see who the sharks approach @13..can you remember ronnie cooke?(Griquas and superrugby for the cheetahs)..straeuli was keen on him a few seasons ago,but then he upped and left sa for france.don’t know where he is now.

  • Don’t think we will see ruan back in sa soon,he has a legit contract with ulster and sharks won’t be able to buy him out of his contract..now I can understand why straeuli said earlier that the sharks don’t want ruan to go and will try and convince him to stay..perhaps ruan jumped ship to soon :-(

  • Cheers Rory! Thanks for your contribution to the Sharks. Typical gutsy move to compete with Vermaak for the scrummie spot at the Lions, you can do it!

  • Great lose but the man needs to be playing week in week out. Not playing understudy to Charl.

Good Luck Rory, you will be a tough opponent

  • I am one of the few who obviously rate Rory very highly, massive loss for the Sharks, and much better than Jano. Mitchell will turn this guy’s career around.

  • One thing I think is that everyone should give Hoffman sometime once he starts playing he,ll have to adjust. He,ll be better than kockett.Think the Macloed + JLP +Bosman partership will be interisting to see how it works .Would love to see Hoffman+ Lambie+ Bosman that will be crazy ,Hoffman Lambie a game changers and Bosman will stabilise them with tactical kicking .Think the Sharks have the most best south african team but Brian Van Zyl and rudolf will find a way to mess this up
